Improving And Expanding The Role Of D-Optimality In Experimental Designs With Emphasis On Response Surfaces, Chin-Kyooh Lee May 1985

Improving And Expanding The Role Of D-Optimality In Experimental Designs With Emphasis On Response Surfaces, Chin-Kyooh Lee

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

When an experimenter performs experiments, the most important consideration is the experimental design. However, if the experimental cost is low, the experimental design is not a problem because the experimenter is at liberty to choose any design he wants. But if the cost is high and the number of experiments is restricted, then the experimental design becomes critical. Classical experimental designs are the best designs and they have unique properties. But they cannot be used when the experimenter is confronted with special problems such as a restriction on the number of experiments, restricted experimental runs, augmentation of designs, or special …

The Seasonal Pattern Of Shipping Freight Rates, Wathanachai Raunglerdpanyagul May 1985

The Seasonal Pattern Of Shipping Freight Rates, Wathanachai Raunglerdpanyagul

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This paper reviews the behavior of shipping freight rate by using the freight index as an proxy variable. A proxy variable is the one that is a substitute to the intended one because it is difficult to obtain. It was found that a seasonal pattern in the freight rate exists, but no specific estimated pattern of the seasonal variation was found. Generally, tramp freight rates rise above average level from February or March to June or July, and from September or October to December or January. The tanker freight rate, which differs from the tramp freight rate, has only one …

Approaches To Development And Extension Of Capture Technologies For Developing Small Scale Fisheries, Stephen C. Drew May 1985

Approaches To Development And Extension Of Capture Technologies For Developing Small Scale Fisheries, Stephen C. Drew

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Over half the world's supply of fish for human consumption is produced by small scale fisheries. In recent years, increasing attention has been focused on improvement of small scale fisheries in developing countries. In spite of substantial investments, and the arduous labor of many competent, well-intentioned people, the success rates of small scale fisheries development projects have not been encouraging. This paper will discuss two types of project approaches which have been used in small scale fisheries development, with examples of the challenges and problems they have encountered. A description of the Appropriate Technology Adaptive Research, Development, and Extension (ATARDE) …

Case Study Of Installing A Research Project Cost Accounting System, Marjorie Rolfsmeyer Apr 1985

Case Study Of Installing A Research Project Cost Accounting System, Marjorie Rolfsmeyer

Theses

The thesis, Case Study of Installing a Research Project Cost Accounting System by Marjorie Rolfsmeyer, explores the development and implementation of a computerized cost accounting system for research and development (R&D) projects within the Health Care Division of a major corporation. The author identifies the unique challenges of research cost accounting, which differs from traditional manufacturing cost systems due to its unpredictable nature and project-specific expenditures.

The study outlines the purpose of a project cost accounting system, emphasizing its role in budgeting, financial tracking, and managerial decision-making. It discusses how cost control mechanisms, including detailed expense reporting, job numbering, and …

Documentation Of Whole-Farm Model For The Eastern Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Ross S. Kingwell, David J. Pannell, David. A. Morrison Mar 1985

Documentation Of Whole-Farm Model For The Eastern Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Ross S. Kingwell, David J. Pannell, David. A. Morrison

Grain and other field crops published reports

The Eastern Wheatbelt Model (EwM) is a hypothetical farm model, intended to be representative of farms in the eastern wheatbelt region. It is a model of an 'average' farm in an 'average' season. Nevertheless it is possible to substitute the resource mix of a 'real' farm for the •average' and to substitute various types of season for the 'average'.

Assumptions of 'average' farm resources and •average' season are based on opinions by WADA researchers and advisers. For the EWM, researchers and advisers at Merredin prescribed average resources for an eastern wheatbelt farm receiving a 300 mm average rainfall including 210 …

A Taxonomy Of Manpower Forecasting And Planning, Moon Ho Song, Arnold Reisman Feb 1985

A Taxonomy Of Manpower Forecasting And Planning, Moon Ho Song, Arnold Reisman

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper synthesizes landmark developments in manpower forecasting and planning models, presenting a comprehensive taxonomy grounded in the methods and decision factors used in these processes. The proposed schema encompasses all relevant factors identified in existing literature and offers a general methodology with a highly complex structure. The taxonomy’s development is guided by two core objectives: (1) to identify significant factors relevant to manpower forecasting and planning models, and (2) to classify existing models as subcases of a general acronym, enabling systematic delineation of most conceivable models by modifying terms or subscripts. The classification framework is applied to codify landmark …

A Comparison Of Training Available To Entry Level Naval And Merchant Marine Engineroom Personnel, Paul J. Bugelski Jan 1985

A Comparison Of Training Available To Entry Level Naval And Merchant Marine Engineroom Personnel, Paul J. Bugelski

Theses

Similarities between occupations or industrial environments are often overshadowed by differences between goals, services, or products. From the time that shipboard steam propulsion became a practicality the Naval and merchant marine services have experienced this phenomena. For various reasons, the two sectors have ignored similarities between their respective occupational sub-groups, e.g. engineroom crews, and the training which facilitates each group's performance.

Manning and training problems, related to the evolution of automated shipboard propulsion plants, have been shared by the U.S. Navy and commercial ship operators. Recent events such as the British Falkland Islands crisis and the implementation of the U.S. …

A Global Resource Allocation Model For An Electrical Utility, Pantelis G. Tinios Jan 1985

A Global Resource Allocation Model For An Electrical Utility, Pantelis G. Tinios

Theses

The management of the electric utility company, as the management of any other company, has to make important decisions which will have a direct impact on the company's future operations.

In this study, a global model was devised which enables the management to make more intelligent decisions related to the company's planning process.

The company's goals and subgoals are formulated, in a systematic way, into the mathematical model along with operational and financial constraints. Productivity growth, steady labor force, fuel availability, cash flow requirements, share rating, and coverage were some of the goals to be achieved. The goal programming technique …

Keeping Up With Technological Change, Karlis V. Kopans Jan 1985

Keeping Up With Technological Change, Karlis V. Kopans

Theses

Advances in technology over the past fifty (50) years have changed virtually everything that touches our lives today to some degree. However, in the last five years or so, these innovations have been combined into products and systems which have visibly begun to change society as we have known it in the past.

Only in recent years, have the affects of technological change or innovation on society begun to be examined. While a fair amount of literature has been published to date on specific areas of technological change, few publications have been produced which provide a general overview of the …

John Caldwell Colt: A Notorious Accountant, Louis Goldberg, Williard E. Stone

Accounting Historians Journal

John C. Colt was the author of a successful bookkeeping text which had many school adoptions and at least 46 editions. During an argument with Samuel Adams, his publisher, over the cost of his 5th edition, Colt killed Adams with a hatchet. Convicted of murder and condemned to execution by hanging, Colt committed suicide in prison in 1842. His text, The Science of Double Entry Bookkeeping, first published in 1838, continued in print until 1856.

America's Earliest Recorded Text In Accounting: Sarjeant's 1789 Book, Terry K. Sheldahl

Accounting Historians Journal

In 1789, seven years before the text developed by "pioneer American [accounting] author" William Mitchell appeared, Thomas Sarjeant of Philadelphia published An Introduction to the Counting House. It was a concise and able expression of a long mercantile bookkeeping tradition destined to result in later American texts. A mathematics teacher in England and a Philadelphia "academy," Sarjeant also contributed works on commercial arithmetic.

Role Of Stock Dividends In Defining Income, Developing Capital Market Research And Exploring The Economic Consequences Of Accounting Policy Decisions, James Joseph Tucker Jan 1985

Role Of Stock Dividends In Defining Income, Developing Capital Market Research And Exploring The Economic Consequences Of Accounting Policy Decisions, James Joseph Tucker

Accounting Historians Journal

Allegations that stock dividends serve as a vehicle for deceptive financing, evasion of taxes, misleading financial reporting, and stock market manipulation resulted in legislation that prohibited their use in the United States in the latter part of the 19th century. In the 20th century, efforts of the Supreme Court to determine the economic substance and taxability of stock dividends catalyzed a pioneering effort by the Court to define income within the 16th Amendment. As early as 1930 market reactions to stock dividends were investigated; this may have been one of the earliest forms of capital market research. This paper examines …

Assessing The Impact Of Expenditure On Achievement In Virginia Public Education, Robert C. Dolan, Robert M. Schmidt Jan 1985

Assessing The Impact Of Expenditure On Achievement In Virginia Public Education, Robert C. Dolan, Robert M. Schmidt

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

The strength of the relationship between student achievement and school resources has important implications for public policy in general, and for the appropriate role of state funding in local education in particular. It is well known that, to the extent that higher expenditures render improved educational performance, vexing issues of legal and economic equity arise. Of course, it is also well known that the findings of extensive empirical analysis suggest that the expenditure-achievement nexus is, at best, of secondary importance among the factors affecting education.

This paper examines the relationship between achievement and expenditure in Virginia public schools. Our focus …

Spiraling Upward: Auditing Methods As Described By Montgomery And His Successors, John Holmes Myers Jan 1985

Spiraling Upward: Auditing Methods As Described By Montgomery And His Successors, John Holmes Myers

Accounting Historians Journal

Audit emphasis this century has swung away from chasing entries through the books to values being fairly presented and then back again. Now, however, what was chasing entries through the books has become verifying internal controls. This verification is primary evidence that statement values are fair, and comparison of values to things themselves is corroborative evidence. Thus, auditors have not gone around in a circle, but in a radically changing environment they have spiraled upward. These conclusions are drawn from a review of the nine editions of Montgomery's Auditing published through 1975 and from the two editions which Montgomery prepared …

Fisheries Report No 68 - The Commercial Fishery For Barramundi (Lates Calcarifer) In Western Australia, Dr N. Morrissy

Fisheries Research Reports

Commercial catch and effort data from the Western Australian fishery for barramundi, Lates calcarifer, over eight years to 1982-83 were analysed. Major stocks and areas of this fishery are Cambridge Gulf (Ord River, port of Wyndham), Kimberley coast, King Sound and Broome coast (Fitzroy River, ports of Derby and Broome), and Pilbara coast (ports of Port Hedland, Roebourne and Onslow) where the Ashburton River is the southern limit to the distribution of barramundi on the west coast. As elsewhere, barramundi stocks are associated with river systems. The Low annual catch of about 30 tonnes appears to be due to the …

Maximizing Expected Profits In Competitive Bidding, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1985

Maximizing Expected Profits In Competitive Bidding, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Forest products firms often buy much of their raw material through competitive bidding. The bidding process is vital to such companies, yet models are often used which merely help predict winning bids. Managers should consider expected returns from potential timber buying contracts-the product of profit and the prob· ability of realizing that profit. A general approach is summarized for maximizing expected profit in competitive bidding. For timber buying, profits are net returns minus stumpage costs. The probability of obtaining the profit is the probability a given bid will be accepted, and can be represented by a probability density function. The …
