Agribusiness

The dissemination of information by extension agents on dairy management practices used to control mastitis and the reception and use of that information by producers are investigated. Producers are surveyed to determine current practices used. The relationship between milk yield, somatic cell count, management practices, and producer and production characteristics is estimated. Subjective probabilities are elicited from "expert," extension agents, and producers concerning the impact and cost of various management practices. Subjective marginal value products and marginal input costs are computed and compared for the respondent groups. Stochastic dominance is used to rank the relative importance of the practices as …

Expansion Of Knowledge Via Consolidation Of Knowledge, Arnold Reisman Oct 1987

Expansion Of Knowledge Via Consolidation Of Knowledge, Arnold Reisman

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This paper addresses the need to consolidate knowledge while expanding it by creating taxonomies and/or generalized formulations. A number of ways to achieve that end are delineated and embedded in a suggested taxonomy of taxonomies. Selected works from both the "hard" and the management sciences are summarized to demonstrate the variety of knowledge consolidating role models and to test the effectiveness of the Taxonomy of Taxonomies.

Evaluation Of Word Processing Cost Effectiveness, Nicholas E. Tedesco Sep 1987

Evaluation Of Word Processing Cost Effectiveness, Nicholas E. Tedesco

Theses

The objective of this thesis is to examine the use of word processing technology to determine if its implementation is a cost effective investment. This will be accomplished by comparing the cost of a typewritten page before and after the implementation or upgrade of word processing equipment. The degree of utilization and the impact of utilization on standard costs will also be examined.

Significant difficulty was encountered attempting to locate and compile statistical information on word processing. Therefore, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to the 100 largest public and 100 largest private companies headquartered in New Jersey, requesting information …

The Expected Cost Of Ruin And Insurance Premiums In Mutual Insurance, Charles S. Tapiero, Laurent L. Jacque

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The purpose of this paper is to provide a quantitative definition and assessment of the expected cost of ruin in mutual insurance. In addition, some implications are drawn regarding the actuarially fair premium policyholders may be willing to pay for mutual insurance. A special case is treated, yielding analytical results that allow a comparative static analysis of the effects of ruin on premium payments and an assessment of the cost of ruin-free mutual insurance contracts.

Countertrade is a modern version of barter trading. This thesis provides a texonomy for the various formats of countertrade in practice today. Each of the formats classified is also mathematically modeled. Under the thoery of comparative advantage this thesis derives quantity ranges within which negotiations can take place and both sides will profit. The thesis proves that product bundling increases negotiating latitute. The thesis also is concerned with deviations from comparative advantage. The situations of absolute comparative advantage and of comparative disadvantage are introduced to calculate quantity ranges using various types of product bundling. The extent of government subvention and/or …

Minimization Of Total Tardiness In Many-To-Many Pickup And Delivery Systems, Carolyn Kidder Cuff Aug 1987

Minimization Of Total Tardiness In Many-To-Many Pickup And Delivery Systems, Carolyn Kidder Cuff

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

In the problem considered, the objective is to minimize the total tardiness in a schedule which includes many pickup and many delivery locations. Due to the large number of items and fixed number of vehicles, a feasible schedule picking all items up after their known ready time and delivering them before their due times generally does not exist. Algorithms for single and multivehicle instances are developed. A branch and bound algorithm developed for the single vehicle finds an optimal solution. However, its use is limited to comparatively small problems. The alternative heuristic consists of 2 phases. First, the vehicle is …

Investment Planning Model For Optimum Allocation Of Natural Gas: A Programming Approach, V Ranganathan, R Ramanathan Jul 1987

Investment Planning Model For Optimum Allocation Of Natural Gas: A Programming Approach, V Ranganathan, R Ramanathan

IIMB Management Review

Natural gas has been recognised for a long time as a primary source in most of the developed countries. However, the developing countries like India did not realisethe full potential in this area till reeently. This is all the more appalling since natural gas seems to be India’s predominant hydrocarbon resources. As per the Advisory Board on Energy, in 1976, an Indo-Soviet geological study team had concluded that 75% of India’s ultimate hydro-carbon reserves were in the form of natural gas.

High Tech Transition And The Organization, Chetan H. Shah May 1987

High Tech Transition And The Organization, Chetan H. Shah

Theses

The future outlook of any corporation depends upon the resourcefulness of those who manage the planning and operating functions of the business. Time and accuracy are two critical criteria in effective managerial reports for decision making. The electronic computer is a welcome addition into the industry. This study concentrates on determining the impact computing has had on the managers and especially on the people working in the organization from clerks to the top level management.

While an investigation of the existing literature was …

Management Controls And Modeling With Personal Computers (Pcs) For Material Procurement Within The Department Of Defense (Dod), Stefano Coppola

Theses

As an inevitable fallout of the microcomputer explosion, micro-to-mainframe links have been praised as an effective means of satisfying microcomputer users who insist for more processing power and less dependence on mainframe data processing. Personal Computers used to emulate terminals offer local storage capabilities as well as financial analysis and graphics.

Using a Personal Computer, Lotus 123, and a simulated PC-Link, a management control system was designed to satisfy the Department of Defense Instruction (DODI) 7000.2 for material procurement.

The resulting model provides both the Government and the contractor's management control system with a reliable, timely, and auditable system that …
