This dissertation examines whether environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosure sentiment extracted from SEC Form 10-K Item 1A risk disclosures aligns with Bloomberg ESG scores. The study combines SEC textual disclosures, Bloomberg ESG ratings, firm financial data, executive compensation data, and executive gender characteristics. Natural language processing and artificial intelligence methods, including FinBERT, Loughran-McDonald sentiment measures, BART-MNLI zero-shot classification, LLaMA-based ESG scoring, and readability analysis, are used to evaluate ESG-related disclosure signals. This dissertation comprises three chapters examining how political risk and tax enforcement shape corporate investment decisions and firm value. The first essay investigates how firm-level political risk affects investment efficiency among U.S. firms. Using 40,215 firm-year observations spanning 2002-2022 and exploiting the Hassan et al. (2019) political risk index as a firm-specific measure, we find that political risk reduces investment efficiency exclusively through underinvestment - a one-standard-deviation increase corresponds to approximately $5.7 million in foregone annual investment for a median firm. Mediation analysis confirms that precautionary cash hoarding accounts for 31.8% of the effect, establishing uncertainty - rather than capital …

A central tenet of many leadership theories is that leaders treat their followers differently. Although leader differentiation is ubiquitous, its effects on leaders and followers are not well understood and theory and research have not simultaneously considered its three key properties: Leader–member exchange (LMX) differentiation, LMX quality, and LMX social comparison. Online reviews increasingly guide physician choice, yet it remains unclear whether content emphasizing a physician's competence (technical skills) or benevolence (prioritizing patients' welfare over self‐interest) more strongly influences patients' decisions. Integrating a field study of 12,351 physician reviews with two online experiments, we distinguish two dimensions of review effectiveness: how helpful readers find a review, and how confident they feel about the choice it informs. We show that competence‐ and benevolence‐focused content influences these outcomes through distinct mechanisms. Benevolence‐focused reviews receive higher helpfulness evaluations because caring behaviors are easier to describe in concrete, vivid language and because naturalistic review platforms …

This study examines whether large language models exhibit systematic country-contingent differential treatment in financial fraud detection. Analyzing 30,000 synthetic transactions with identical statistical properties across three country attributions (United States, Great Britain, and China), we find LLMs assign significantly higher fraud probabilities to Chinese-attributed transactions (36.2%) compared to Western countries (≈30–31%), resulting in accuracy disparities of 67% versus 74%. The gap remains stable across five independent experimental replications and persists when using Chinese language prompts, ruling out linguistic effects. Bias mitigation strategies, such as requiring explanations or explicit country neutrality instructions, reduce but fail to eliminate these disparities. Testing across …

The use of AI in generating ads offers benefits for NPOs, such as enhanced cost efficiency and personalized content. However, consumers often exhibit algorithm aversion when AI performs subjective tasks, like ad creation. According to mind perception theory, AI is seen as high in agency but low in experience. Given this, we hypothesized that including future predictions in AI-generated ads would mitigate this aversion. Across four studies, we found that AI-generated donation ads were generally perceived as less credible and elicited lower donation intentions than human-created ones. Based on social exchange theory, this study investigates how interactions between influencers and followers during live streaming impact impulse buying behaviour. It explores how perceived influencer traits, namely authenticity, expertise, attractiveness, and homophily, influence trust, emotional attachment, and para-social interaction, which in turn drive impulsive purchases. Using PLS-SEM technique, a survey of 303 Chinese TikTok users reveals that emotional factors, particularly para-social interaction and attachment, have a stronger effect on impulse buying than trust. This paper examines how the SEC’s deregulation of confidential treatment under the FAST Act affected firms’ material contract redaction behavior and the broader economic consequences associated with disclosure opacity. Using a large sample of SEC filings, I document that confidential treatment is positively associated with both product market competition and lower 10-K readability, suggesting that redaction reflects both proprietary protection incentives and broader disclosure opacity. Further analyses using abnormal file size show that discretionary disclosure complexity remains significantly associated with redaction behavior after controlling for firms’ underlying economic complexity and reporting environment.
