An Integrated Social Actor And Service Oriented Architecture (Soa) Approach For Improved Electronic Health Record (Ehr) Privacy And Confidentiality In The Us National Healthcare Information Network (Nhin), Gondy Leroy, Elliot Sloane, Steven Sheetz

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The emerging US National Healthcare Information Network (NHIN) will improve healthcare’s efficacy, efficiency, and safety. The first-generation NHIN being developed has numerous advantages and limitations. One of the most difficult aspects of today’s NHIN is ensuring privacy and confidentiality for personal health data, because family and caregivers have multiple complex legal relationships to a patient. A Social Actor framework is suggested to organize and manage these legal roles, but the Social Actor framework would be very difficult to implement in today’s NHIN. Social Actor Security Management could, however, be effectively implemented using Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs), which are rapidly becoming …

Identifying Synonymous Terms In Preparation For Technology Mining, Cherie C. Trumbach Dec 2007

Identifying Synonymous Terms In Preparation For Technology Mining, Cherie C. Trumbach

Management Faculty Publications

In this research, the development of a `concept-clumping algorithm' designed to improve the clustering of technical concepts is demonstrated . The algorithm developed first identifies a list of technically relevant noun phrases from a cleaned extracted list and then applies a rule-based algorithm for identifying synonymous terms based on shared words in each term. An assessment of the algorithm found that the algorithm has an 89—91% precision rate, was successful in moving technically important terms higher in the term frequency list, and improved the technical specificity of term clusters.

Deliberation And Dialogue In The Pracademic Commons, Roger A. Lohmann Dec 2007

Deliberation And Dialogue In The Pracademic Commons, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

There is a strong connection between deliberation and dialogue and commons theory Deliberative activity generally takes place within group settings that approximate the defining conditions of a commons. In addition, social capital, in the form of trust and a sense of mutuality, and construction of a new or reconstituted normative outlook typically result from successful deliberation and dialogue efforts. This poses several lessons for the practice of the practice of such discussions.

International New Ventures: Revisiting The Influences Behind The 'Born-Global' Firm, Terence P. C. Fan, Phillip Phan Dec 2007

International New Ventures: Revisiting The Influences Behind The 'Born-Global' Firm, Terence P. C. Fan, Phillip Phan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

There is a small but theoretically important literature on 'born-globals' or international new venture firms that positions itself in contrast to the more established sequential international entry literature. In this paper we examine the pattern of entry into international markets for a set of international new ventures and show that they need not be a distinct breed of firms, as previous research has portrayed. Absent a specific technological advantage, the decision for a new venture to internationalize at inception is influenced by the size of its home market and by its production capacity, as well as by cultural and economic …

Impact Of Culture On International Business Negotiation: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Taiwan, Hong Kong, And Mainland China, Jung-Tsung Tu

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Each year international business amounts to more than $1 trillion U.S. dollars (WTO, 2005). Both foreign investment and international trade are growing substantially, causing increasing interdependence of national economies as well as furthering the globalization of companies. Presently, Greater China's economy holds an increasingly large influence on the world. Despite the enthusiasm for increased economic exchange, many people have found that cultural differences have hindered their ability to efficiently conduct business due to their lack of understanding of the cultural differences among Chinese citizens living in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China. People engaged in the negotiations of agreements in …

A Survey Of Schema Matching Research, Roger Blake Sep 2007

A Survey Of Schema Matching Research, Roger Blake

College of Management Working Papers and Reports

Schema matching is the process of developing semantic matches between two or more schemas. The purpose of schema matching is generally either to merge two or more databases, or to enable queries on multiple, heterogeneous databases to be formulated on a single schema (Doan and Halevy 2005). This paper develops a taxonomy of schema matching approaches, classifying them as being based on a combination schema matching technique and the type of data used by those techniques. Schema matching techniques are categorized as being based on rules, learning, or ontology, and the type of data used is categorized as being based …

Designing Multimodal Interaction For The Visually Impaired, Xiaoyu Chen Aug 2007

Designing Multimodal Interaction For The Visually Impaired, Xiaoyu Chen

Dissertations

Although multimodal computer input is believed to have advantages over unimodal input, little has been done to understand how to design a multimodal input mechanism to facilitate visually impaired users' information access.

This research investigates sighted and visually impaired users' multimodal interaction choices when given an interaction grammar that supports speech and touch input modalities. It investigates whether task type, working memory load, or prevalence of errors in a given modality impact a user's choice. Theories in human memory and attention are used to explain the users' speech and touch input coordination.

Among the abundant findings from this research, the …

Situational Judgment Tests In High-Stakes Settings: Issues And Strategies With Generating Alternate Forms, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett Jul 2007

Situational Judgment Tests In High-Stakes Settings: Issues And Strategies With Generating Alternate Forms, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study used principles underlying item generation theory to posit competing perspectives about which features of situational judgment tests might enhance or impede consistent measurement across repeat test administrations. This led to 3 alternate-form development approaches (random assignment, incident isomorphism, and item isomorphism). The effects of these approaches on alternate-form consistency, mean score changes, and criterion-related validity were examined in a high-stakes context (N = 3,361). Generally, results revealed that even small changes in the context of the situations presented resulted in significantly lower alternate-form consistency. Conversely, placing more constraints on the alternate-form development process proved beneficial. The contributions, implications, …

International Market Entry And Organizational Competency Development: A Case Study Of A Russian Oil And Gas Joint Venture, Paul M. Stephenson, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

International Market Entry And Organizational Competency Development: A Case Study Of A Russian Oil And Gas Joint Venture, Paul M. Stephenson, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

We present an empirical study of competency development in a new joint venture, between a western firm and a Russian firm. Using transaction cost and knowledge management approaches, we propose working models for exploring the competency development dimension of a market entry strategy of the western firm in Russia. We consider organizational competency as measurable know-how, skills, behaviors, and attitudes of key employees that allows the company to meet their performance goals. Using a triangular case study approach the paper focuses on the well-site supervisor competency building process within the joint venture. We observe the critical elements of the competency …

The Role Of Social Capital In Creating Effective Global Supply Chains, Susan I. Scott, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

The Role Of Social Capital In Creating Effective Global Supply Chains, Susan I. Scott, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

In this paper we examine the relationship between the concept of social capital and the creation of effective global supply chains. Recent literature cites the effective global supply chain as a source of competitive advantage for firms competing in the global economy. Evidence exists that global firms now compete through the entire supply chain for each industry, raising the bar for strategic consideration. A global supply chain is comprised of multiple organizations, geographically dispersed, but linked by economic transactions, which enable the root firm to satisfy customer needs. The increase in information technology management is critical in coordinating the work …

E-Banking In Emerging Markets: Shifting The Competitive Landscape, Jennifer Isern, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

E-Banking In Emerging Markets: Shifting The Competitive Landscape, Jennifer Isern, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

This paper discusses the dynamics of competition in the financial services industry, and theories of competition that explain sometimes counter-intuitive effects observed over the last fifty years. We present arguments here that new forces are taking hold in the financial services industry that may change existing competition paradigms. Electronic banking is thriving in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. as customers click their mouse, press telephone keys, and slide cards to conduct their banking. Increasingly, banks and other financial service providers are starting to launch many of these same innovations in developing countries. Emerging markets are in the position of developing …

Analyzing The Competitive Relations Among The Location In The Asia-Pacific Region For Developing The Re-Export Type Of Global Logistics Hub, Kuo-Liang Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This research empirically investigates competitive relations among locations developing the re-export type of global logistics hubs (GLH) in the Asia-Pacific region from the perspective of logistics service providers. A quantitative SWOT analytical procedure that integrates the AHP method and the fuzzy theory of graded mean integration representations was utilized to empirically evaluate the Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) problem. Respondents located Shenzhen, Busan and Kaohsiung locate in the SO quadrant and Shanghai, HK and Singapore in the WT quadrant. Shanghai could be expected to move into the leading group in the future. Finally, the concept of Grand Strategy Matrix (GSM) …

Researching Situated Learning: Participation, Identity And Practices In Client-Consultant Relationships, Karen Handley, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Robin Fincham, Andrew Sturdy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Situated learning theory has emerged as a radical alternative to conventional cognitivist theories of knowledge and learning, emphasizing the relational and structural aspects of learning as well as the dynamics of identity construction. However, although many researchers have embraced the theoretical strengths of this perspective, methodological and operational issues remain undeveloped in the literature. This article seeks to address these deficiencies by developing a conceptual framework informed by situated learning theory and by investigating the methodological implications. The framework is applied in the context of an empirical study of how management consultants learn the practices and identities appropriate to clientconsultant …

La Mondialisation Qui Menace L’Identité Française Et Ses Relations Avec Le Commerce, Kelly Mcbrien May 2007

La Mondialisation Qui Menace L’Identité Française Et Ses Relations Avec Le Commerce, Kelly Mcbrien

Senior Honors Projects

Globalization is an integral part of our society today: economically, socially and politically. Some may see Globalization as the world coming together through the ease and speed of capital, goods, services, ideas, information, and technology across our “shrinking” borders. Others may hold a more negative view of Globalization, and may see it as simply growing conflicts between nations and cultures. One of the central problems of globalization is the fear of homogenization or Americanization. Many cultures see globalization as cultural uniformity. As Benedict Anderson has said, “one man’s imagined community is another mans political prison.” This quote can help to …

Choice, Gender, And Succession In The Family Business, Kathyann Kessler Overbeke May 2007

Choice, Gender, And Succession In The Family Business, Kathyann Kessler Overbeke

Student Scholarship

This paper proposes a research initiative to investigate the factors that may inhibit women from entering their family’s business in a managerial or decision making capacity. Based on a review of the literature\, very few women become successors in family firms. In 1994 only 2% of CEO’s in family businesses were female. Yet\, despite the abundance of literature on succession in family businesses\, few studies have examined the experience of daughters of family business owners. Some literature investigates the experience of daughters who have entered their family’s business\, but research on daughters who have not entered their family’s business is …

Using The Technology Of The Confessional As An Analytical Resource: Four Analytical Stances Towards Research Interviews In Discourse Analysis, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt May 2007

Using The Technology Of The Confessional As An Analytical Resource: Four Analytical Stances Towards Research Interviews In Discourse Analysis, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt

Articles

Among the various approaches that have developed from FOUCAULT's work is an Anglophone discourse analysis that has attempted to combine FOUCAULTian insights with the techniques of Conversation Analysis. An important current methodological issue in this discourse analytical approach is its theoretical preference for "naturally occurring" rather than research interview data. A FOUCAULTian perspective on the interview as a research instrument, questions the idea of "naturally-occurring discourse". The "technology of the confessional" operates, not only within research interviews, but permeates other interactions as well. Drawing on FOUCAULT does not dismiss the problems of the interview as research instrument rather it shows …

The Impact Of Personal Characteristics And Intrinsic Motivation On Creative Behavior Among Indonesian Radio Station Managers, Nugroho J. Setiadi, Anees Janee Ali, Rehana Aafaqi

The South East Asian Journal of Management

The main purpose of the article is to increase understanding in some personal characteristics affecting creative performance among Indonesian radio station managers’ leadership context. Using creativity-relevant personal characteristics and motivation as input model, the authors identified that both of these two variables are positively related to creative performance. The study hypothesized that Leader-member exchange (LMX) moderate the relationship between personal characteristics and creative performance. Among a sample of 283 Indonesian radio station managers, results found that creativity-relevant personal characteristics and intrinsic motivation were positively related to creative performance when managers’ perception of followers’ work contribution toward them (as the second …

A Fuzzy Madm Method For Solving A/R Collection Instruments Selection Problem, Chien-Chang Chou Apr 2007

A Fuzzy Madm Method For Solving A/R Collection Instruments Selection Problem, Chien-Chang Chou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The aim of this paper is to propose a ranking method for solving the account receivable (A/R) collection instrument selection problem in the international trade under the fuzzy multiple attribute decisionmaking (MADM) environment. The representation of multiplication operation on fuzzy numbers is useful for decision makers who are in the fuzzy multiple attribute decision-making environment to rank all candidate A/R collection instruments and choose the best one. Based on the graded mean integration representation method, this paper proposes the representation of multiplication operation on fuzzy numbers. Finally this representation of multiplication operation on fuzzy numbers is applied to solving an …

A Fuzzy Multicriterion Q-Analysis Model For International Logistic-Park Location Selection, Junn-Yuan Teng, Kuo-Liang Lee, Wen-Chih Huang Apr 2007

A Fuzzy Multicriterion Q-Analysis Model For International Logistic-Park Location Selection, Junn-Yuan Teng, Kuo-Liang Lee, Wen-Chih Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This research empirically evaluates locations for development of international logistics parks from the perspective of Taiwanese firms. A new fuzzy multiple criteria Q-analysis (MCQA) method is proposed to improve the performance judgment of decision-makers. An empirical evaluation of 11 potential locations in northern Taiwan was performed, using local logistics professionals as participants. The fuzzy MCQA method that integrates MCQA, fuzzy measurement and fuzzy grade classification gives an explicit result value for each criterion to be evaluated. The method greatly decreases the complexity of the evaluation process and preserves the advantages of the traditional MCQA method. Finally, the theoretical and practical …

Examining The Performance Of Competition Policy Enforcement Agencies: A Cross-Country Comparison, A. E. Rodriguez, Lesley A. Denardis Apr 2007

Examining The Performance Of Competition Policy Enforcement Agencies: A Cross-Country Comparison, A. E. Rodriguez, Lesley A. Denardis

Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications

An examination of a cross-section of 102 nations reveals marked differences in the performance of their competition policy enforcement agencies. Likely explanatory factors considered include gross domestic product per capita, the intensity of competition, physical size, the level of corruption, national experience with a modern antitrust law and whether the common law prevails. Competition policy agencies operate poorly in jurisdictions characterized by corruption and poor competitive intensity. In fact, differences in levels of corruption and variations in the intensity of competition account for approximately 78 percent of the observed variance in agency performance. Group characteristics, however, vary by region and …

Socialization And The Business School, Stefano Harney Apr 2007

Socialization And The Business School, Stefano Harney

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

There is a new phase in the generalization of management capacities, but contrary to the assumptions of critical management educators, the investment in the business school has not been to socialize more students into this generalized management, but to seek the principle of generalization in these students themselves as part of a struggle between capital and labour. Using the insights of autonomist feminist theorists, this article attempts to analyse why critical management education has been unable to find a new object appropriate to this new generalization of management, and speculates on what the critical and political benefits might be of …

The Emerging Academic Discipline Of Knowledge Management, Martin Grossman Jan 2007

The Emerging Academic Discipline Of Knowledge Management, Martin Grossman

Management Faculty Publications

Although knowledge management (KM) has gained worldwide recognition as an important strategic imperative, its integration into academia has lagged. A review of the literature, as well as an examination of information systems (IS) curriculum models, was performed to determine how KM related courses are being integrated. The analysis revealed that KM is still not considered appropriate as an integral component of the undergraduate IS curriculum; rather it is more prevalent in optional courses or those covering advanced topics, and integrated into the curriculum at the graduate level. The sluggish adoption of KM into mainstream academia is countered by an increasing …

Printing Of Pacioli's Summa In 1494: How Many Copies Were Printed?, Alan Sangster Jan 2007

Printing Of Pacioli's Summa In 1494: How Many Copies Were Printed?, Alan Sangster

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper considers the printing of Pacioli's Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportioni et Proportionalita (Summa) in 1494. In particular, it attempts to answer the question, how many copies of Summa were printed in 1494? It does so through consideration of the printing process, the printer of Summa, the size of the book, survival rates of other serious books of the period, and the dates it contains revealing when parts of it were completed. It finds that more copies were published than was previously suggested, and that the survival rate of copies has probably as much to do with the manner …

Straw Men And Old Saws -- An Evidence-Based Response To Sy And Tinker's Critique, Thomas N. Tyson, David Oldroyd Jan 2007

Straw Men And Old Saws -- An Evidence-Based Response To Sy And Tinker's Critique, Thomas N. Tyson, David Oldroyd

Accounting Historians Journal

In a recent Accounting History article, Sy and Tinker (S&T) [2005] critique accounting history for its support of archivalism and empiricism in light of irrefutable arguments against these antiquarian epistemes. While tempted to lambaste S&T's article as unfettered social activism rather than evidence-based historical inquiry, we focus instead on the more substantive questions S&T raise. We initially summarize their essential arguments, although some of the statements they make are contradictory in nature. We then discuss fundamental issues and genuine challenges to accounting history posed by the post-Kuhnian critique that S&T and others represent, as well as the nature and purpose …

Impact Of Cultural Factors On Transnational Teams: Diversity, Adaptation, Communication Quality, And Trust, Shu-Yir Lee

Theses Digitization Project

The present research proposes a general model of Transnational Teams (TNTs) to investigate how value placed on cultural diversity, cultural adaptation, communication quality, and trust affect the performance of TNTs and their interaction to each other. TNTs contribute to decisions about a firm's total portfolio of transnational interests, global brands and products, organizational configuration, and global sourcing strategy. Qualitative and quantitative methods are applied in this study of thirty members of TNTs from diverse teams. Based on the qualitative and quantitative analysis, relationships between theory and practice are examined. The analysis shows that there is a strong relationship between trust …
