Through the years Blacks have struggled for equality from the right to sit anywhere they chose on a bus to the right to eat in any restaurant. One of the most significant areas of struggle has been equal employment opportunities for Black professionals. The number of Black professionals has increased through the years; however, this increase is minimal when compared to the overall number of professionals in the United States. For example, "the number of Black attorneys has increased by 600% over the past seventeen years... [yet] they only constitute four percent of the total number of lawyers in the …

Perceptions Of Financial Counselling In Western Australia, Natalie Dall
Perceptions Of Financial Counselling In Western Australia, Natalie Dall
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The development of financial counselling in Australia during the past decade has been complex and fragmented. Financial counselling and rural counselling services within Western Australia are funded from a range of government, non-government and church based groups. This has contributed to problems in the identification of basic definitions of the need for services, the role of the financial counsellor and service models or functions. The failure to define the role of the financial counsellor and the needs to be addressed by financial counselling services, "appears to be the most important historic weakness in the field." (Wyse et al., 1990, p.2). …
Outsourcing In Western Australian Hospitals: Management Considerations, Geraldine M. Martin
Outsourcing In Western Australian Hospitals: Management Considerations, Geraldine M. Martin
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis examines Health Care Managers' considerations with and experiences of outsourcing services in Western Australian hospitals. Support services such as cleaning and maintenance are some of the areas which have been targeted for outsourcing (contracting out) by the state government. These services have traditionally been delivered by permanently employed staff either on a full or part- time basis, usually with active union involvement. Core services such as nursing and medical care which involve direct patient care delivery are not included in the outsourcing debate. Firstly, this thesis reviews the literature on outsourcing and its application to the health care …

The Evolution Of First Amendment Protection For Commercial Speech, Karl Boedecker, Fred W. Morgan, Linda Berns Wright
The Evolution Of First Amendment Protection For Commercial Speech, Karl Boedecker, Fred W. Morgan, Linda Berns Wright
Economics, Law, and International Business
During the past 15 years, the U. S. Supreme Court has used Central Hudson Gas v. Public Service Commission (1980) to expand significantly the power of the government at all levels to regulate advertising and other promotional activities. As a result, first amendment protection for commercial speech has steadily diminished. In this article, Supreme Court decisions subsequent to Central Hudson are reviewed to provide an update of Cohen's (1978) work. In addition, the current standard for identifying commercial speech is analyzed, and managerial recommendations are made to guide managers who are responsible for making promotional decisions in this increasingly restricted …

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The fall of Communism marked a new era for Eastern European countries. The events that followed the 1989 revolutions brought about new economic reforms within this region. However, only a few countries have managed to successfully overcome the shroud their communist predecessors had on their approach to business and industry. Poland is one country that is rapidly overcoming its history.
Poland constitutes one of the largest single markets in Eastern Europe and has the highest growth rate of Central and Eastern Europe (4.1%), as well as the highest GDP of $180.4 billion. It offers direct access to both the former …

Accounting Innovations: The Implications Of A Firm's Response To Post Civil War Market Disruptions, Rodney D. Michael, Larry D. Lankton
Accounting Innovations: The Implications Of A Firm's Response To Post Civil War Market Disruptions, Rodney D. Michael, Larry D. Lankton
Accounting Historians Journal
This study addresses the nature of accounting innovations within the context of the Quincy Mining Company's response to the disruption of the domestic copper market following the Civil War. Primary documentation is used to first define the firm's cost management activities, then to define the characteristics of the firm's internal accounting practices that contributed to these activities. It is argued that, although accounting was a participant in the cost control process, it was a paternalistic social structure that provided the impetus for the firm's struggle to remain profitable.

The Development Of A Pollution Prevention Plan, Bruce H. Litzsinger
Theses
This study focuses on the reasons for implementing a pollution prevention program, and the format that such an effort should take . The numerous laws and regulations created by government place a significant burden on the manufacture, handling, and use of hazardous substances, and significant resources are required of industry as a result.
Preventing pollution makes economic sense by increasing operating efficiencies and reducing the costs associated with pollution . Congress and the EPA have made pollution prevention a current priority. The EPA is incorporating pollution prevention into all aspects of the Agency's activities . With regard to industry, the …

An Analysis Of Outsourcing And A Comprehensive Guideline To A Successful Transaction And A Smooth Transition, Robert H. Moss
Theses
Information Services (IS) outsourcing is a new industry. Beginning in the late 1980's, corporations began to view the in-house IS departments as being excessively expensive due to the difficulty in controlling costs, the constantly changing technology, and a general unfamiliarity with inner workings of the systems and processes that made IS delivery work. Other corporations began to see that this niche could be filled by establishing large processing centers and selling the capacity to those corporations whose core businesses did not include IS and to those who believed costs could be reduced by simply getting out of the IS business. …

Worker's Compensation: Difficulties, Causes, And Remedies, Joseph G. Newman
Theses
This thesis will focus on the study of the Missouri workers' compensation system. its difficulties, the causes, and possible remedies. Current research reveals that the rising cost of workers' compensation is causing industry. labor. and government to consider major reforms to the system. These reforms might be directed toward curtailing rising medical costs. Workers' compensation costs have increased significantly through the 80's, and continue to rise. Excessive litigation 1s another factor influencing the cost of workers' compensation.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the difficulties found in administering a fair and equitable workers' compensation system. It is hypothesized …
