Legal Marijuana Disperser Owners' Lived Experiences About Accessing Banking Services, Jonathan Travis James Jan 2021

Legal Marijuana Disperser Owners' Lived Experiences About Accessing Banking Services, Jonathan Travis James

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Marijuana reform has created a question of the potential market size of the legal marijuana industry on a local, state, or national level. The problem is that having no banking services has forced legal marijuana dispensaries to be cash-only businesses and created an increased risk of theft. The lack of normal banking services has also affected the ability to manage money earned from operations. This hermeneutic phenomenological study was grounded by the conceptual framework of the motivations of humans and humans' need to feel safe. The participants of this study were owners and operators in the legal marijuana industry of …

Blockchain Technology And Its Applications Across Multiple Domains: A Survey, Wajde Baiod, Janet Light, Aniket Mahanti

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Blockchain technology has become an active area of research and a technological option for many businesses and industrial communities. With its distributed, decentralized, and trustless nature, blockchain can provide businesses with new opportunities and benefits through increased efficiency, reduced costs, enhanced integrity and transparency, better security, and improved traceability. Although blockchain’s largest applications have been in the finance and banking sector, we now see experiments and proposed applications in different fields. This paper provides an overview of blockchain technology; it brings together all the key design features, characteristics, and benefits of blockchain that make it a superior and unique technology, …

Foreign Direct Investment And The Roles Of Multinational Entreprise, Belay Mekuria Tessema Jan 2021

Foreign Direct Investment And The Roles Of Multinational Entreprise, Belay Mekuria Tessema

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractSub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries experienced successive declines in foreign direct investment (FDI) flows in the textile and apparel manufacturing sector because of a range of macro and micro factors. Leaders of textile and garment organizations who fail to increase FDI are at risk of failure. Grounded in eclectic theory (OLI paradigm), the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies leaders of textile and garment organizations use to increase FDI for enabling business profitability and growth. The participants comprised four senior leaders from one textile and garment organization in Hawassa, Ethiopia, who effectively implemented strategies to increase …

Federal Corporate Law And The Business Of Banking, Lev Menand, Morgan Ricks Jan 2021

Federal Corporate Law And The Business Of Banking, Lev Menand, Morgan Ricks

Faculty Scholarship

The only profit-seeking business enterprises chartered by a federal government agency are banks. Yet there is barely any scholarship justifying this exception to state primacy in U.S. corporate law.

This Article addresses that gap. It reinterprets the National Bank Act (NBA) – the organic statute governing national banks, the heavyweights of the financial sector – as a corporation law and recovers the reasons why Congress wrote this law: not to catalyze private wealth creation or to regulate an existing industry, but to solve an economic governance problem. National banks are federal instrumentalities charged with augmenting the money supply – a …

Startups And Human Capital Management In Egypt: In Search Of Decent Jobs, Maryham Abdel Malak, Ibrahem El Sayed Hassan, Fayrouz El Dabbagh, Laila M. El Baradei

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

While startups are considered an important potential contributor to Egypt’s economic growth, they encounter myriad challenges that hinder their ability to reach their potential, sustain their market presence, and their capacity to provide decent job opportunities. Challenges include the difficulty of locating and sustaining funding, the complicated legal and regulatory framework that governs them, the conservative social norms and culture, and the lack of data and information regarding market dynamics and existing opportunities. The research findings revealed that many startups face challenges with their Human Capital Management (HCM), in the planning, acquisition, development, or sanction functions. This policy paper examines …

Blockchain Technology: A Survey Of Croatian Business Leaders, Dražen Zec, William G. Heninger Jan 2021

Blockchain Technology: A Survey Of Croatian Business Leaders, Dražen Zec, William G. Heninger

Faculty Publications

Blockchain or distributed ledger technology emerged over ten years ago as the underlying technology of bitcoin. Blockchain is a special kind of database with individual records or blocks linked together in a sequential list called chain of blocks. These records are validated by multiple nodes in peer-to-peer networks and they are immutable. It is a decentralized system, with no need for intermediaries where all decisions are made using different consensus mechanisms. High expectations from blockchain technology, combined with a lack of deeper knowledge about the technology are expressed in the results from the survey conducted on a sample of Croatian …

Examining The Relationships Between Innovation, Quality, Productivity, And Customer Satisfaction In Pure Service Companies, Dongjun Rew, Joo Y. Jung, Steve Lovett

Management Faculty Publications

Purpose – This study investigates the relationships between innovation, quality, productivity, and customer satisfaction in pure service companies. Previous studies have shown a negative relationship between quality and productivity in services. However, we argue the two can be positively related when innovation is present.

Design/methodology/approach – We develop and test our hypotheses using secondary data from COMPUSTAT, KLD STAT, and the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). We test our hypotheses using ordinary least squares regression and conduct additional testing using path analysis.

Findings – The findings show that quality and productivity are positively related when innovation is present in pure …

The Effect Of Board Links, Audit Partner Tenure, And Related Party Transactions On Misstatements: Evidence From Chile, Sakthi Mahenthiran, Berta Silva Palavecinos, Hanns De La Fuente-Mella Dec 2020

The Effect Of Board Links, Audit Partner Tenure, And Related Party Transactions On Misstatements: Evidence From Chile, Sakthi Mahenthiran, Berta Silva Palavecinos, Hanns De La Fuente-Mella

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Companies restate when material misstatements are identified in previously issued financial statements. Misstatement research in Latin America is sparse, even though they are an important context to study this phenomenon. Chile’s corporate governance regulations are considered exemplars for Latin American countries but its auditing profession is not well developed. Thus, Chile provides an interesting context to study the complementary roles of audit and board governance affecting misstatements. Using a sample of 104 Chilean listed firms over seven years, our study finds that the board links and audit partner tenure negatively affect misstatements. Specifically, given the prevalence of related party transactions …

The service sector began to be studied in the 20th century as a separate discipline and field. Therefore, the theoretical and methodological foundations of this area are not yet perfect. In particular, most of the research in the field of services to date has focused on the socio-economic aspects of it. The purpose of this study is to improve the theoretical and methodological foundations of not only socio-economic …

An Analysis Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Robotic Process Automation In Accounting Functions., Aharon Yoki Nov 2020

An Analysis Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Robotic Process Automation In Accounting Functions., Aharon Yoki

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Robotic Process Automation (“RPA”) is a recently emergent technology that has exploded in popularity as firms seek to capitalize upon the marketing promise of cost reduction and improved efficiency. Yet, with this expansion of RPA, very little is known about the firms’ initial drivers, perceptions during implementation, and how outcomes align with initial expectations. RPA could displace and dramatically change the workforce, but it is unclear how employees will respond to the continuing spread of RPA. This study seeks to fill that important gap in the scholarly literature with an exploratory mixed-methods study. The first chapter is an extensive literature …

Disaster Relief, Inc., Hao Liang, Cara Vansteenkiste

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We investigate the motivations and value implications of corporate philanthropy by exploiting a global sample of publicly listed firms from 45 countries that provide disaster-relief grants to affected communities. We argue that, while in general corporate philanthropy entails agency concerns, the saliency of large, attention-grabbing natural disasters amplifies the strategic benefits of donating. We find that the returns from donating increase with disaster severity and become positive for firms that rely more on reputation and social image. Returns are also higher for countries with low government relief support, for medium-sized donations, and for in-kind donations. Overall, our results highlight the …

Clarifying Is Project Complexity Through Factor Analysis, Nazeer Joseph, Carl Marnewick Jul 2020

Clarifying Is Project Complexity Through Factor Analysis, Nazeer Joseph, Carl Marnewick

The African Journal of Information Systems

Research shows that the information systems domain is underrepresented in project complexity as it has only eight percent representation within the project complexity landscape. Emphasis is placed mostly on generic project management and engineering project management. This begs the question of how well IS project complexity is understood in literature? The goal of this research is to perform the groundwork for developing new theoretical foundations for information systems (IS) project complexity by enriching previous work. Complexity theory was applied to develop a comprehensive theoretical model for IS project complexity. The IS project complexity (ISPC) model was developed and revealed that …

Learnings From A Cloud Migration Project At A South African Retailer, Nonqaba Jaka, Carolien Van Den Berg Dr.

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

All industries are aware of the potential benefits of cloud computing, however, the migration to cloud has not been widely adopted by South African retailers. The purpose of this paper is to explore the motivations behind organisations deciding to migrate to cloud and the factors that may impact a successful cloud migration project. The paper discusses a case study that analysed the key drivers and the impact of cloud migration within a retail environment. The empirical findings suggest that skills and competencies largely impact every aspect of cloud migration, from decision making to execution and support. Furthermore, that migrating to …

Autonomous Vehicle Manufacturers: Applying A Common Carrier Liability Scheme To Autonomous Vehicle Manufacturers—And Why Elon Musk Will Be Haunted By His Words, Alejandro Monarrez Jul 2020

Autonomous Vehicle Manufacturers: Applying A Common Carrier Liability Scheme To Autonomous Vehicle Manufacturers—And Why Elon Musk Will Be Haunted By His Words, Alejandro Monarrez

Seattle University Law Review Online

The modes and levels of vehicle automation have advanced over the years with the goal of making driving safer. Features like self-steering, lane assist, and blind-spot warning are designed to assist drivers in operating their vehicles. However, the emergence of autonomous vehicle technology self-driving capabilities raises new questions about tort liability.

Since 2016, there have been numerous fatalities involving autonomous vehicles. In this Note, Alejandro Monarrez explores how we should assess liability in autonomous vehicle-related accidents when vehicles are in full automation mode. Monarrez similarly argues the common carrier liability scheme first conceptualized by Dylan LeValley in Autonomous Vehicle Liability—Application …

The Effects Of Firm Age And Firm Size On Strategic Agility And Performance, Jonathan Henry Reed May 2020

The Effects Of Firm Age And Firm Size On Strategic Agility And Performance, Jonathan Henry Reed

Theses and Dissertations

Strategic agility is a relatively new construct in the field of strategic management which describes the degree to which a firm is flexible with its business strategy. Strategically agile firms are able to change their market focus, product mix, key resources, or business models quickly in order to exploit opportunities. This study advances our understanding of strategic agility by empirically testing the Doz and Kosonen (2010) model of the construct in a cross-section of firms in multiple industries with several contingency factors including firm age, firm size, and environmental turbulence. Using CEO-level survey data, the model is validated, and nine …
