Globalization - Challenges To Pakistan Economy: Role Of The State Bank Of Pakistan, Ishrat Hussain Dr. Jan 2005

Globalization - Challenges To Pakistan Economy: Role Of The State Bank Of Pakistan, Ishrat Hussain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Globalization - The Phenomena: Presently the term "Globalization" has gained an emotive tinge. Few believe it as an inevitable and irreversible process that will catapult future world economic development; others discern it with antagonism and fear that it will thwart social progress in the context of developing countries, creating enhanced disparity within and between nations, creating unemployment and poorer living standards.

Doing International Business: From Cultural Perspectives, Charles Calvert, Shinyi Lin, Lynda Martin Jan 2005

Doing International Business: From Cultural Perspectives, Charles Calvert, Shinyi Lin, Lynda Martin

Faculty Publications

The remarkable growth of the global economy over the past 50 years has been shaped by the dynamic interplay of various driving and restraining forces. From business and HRD (Human Resource Development) aspects, an understanding of globalization as it applies to the field of training and educational programs enables organizations to develop competencies and skills to respond to these emerging challenges faced by globalization. In recent reports (Yager, 2001; O’Regan, 2001), employers are increasingly having trouble finding workers who have excellent (1) soft skills, (2) business etiquette, (3) interpersonal communication skills, and (4) intercultural communication skills. An international business organization …

An Econometric Analysis Of Panel Data For Team Performance, Market Characteristics, And Attendance In English Premier League, David Pan, John Baker, Zhen Zhu, Elisa Argent

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

A panel data analysis was used to assess the effects of selected team and market variables on attendance in the English Premier League (EPL). The results confirmed that (a) winning percentage remained a determinant for increasing attendance: (b) soccer consumers of tile EPL were from middle and lower socio-economic classes: (c) newly built or renovated stadiums were significant in increasing attendance, but this only appeared valid for an initial few years: (d) a competitive attitude among spectators between rival teams promoted loyalty, and team identification, consequently increasing attendance; and (e) a promotional strategy of cross-market territories is advisable for sport …

Entrepreneurial Hunger—Shall We Try Chinese?, Joseph E. Levangie Jan 2005

Entrepreneurial Hunger—Shall We Try Chinese?, Joseph E. Levangie

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Many entrepreneurs are able to manage their businesses within relatively contained and familiar geographical and cultural circles. With a world economy shrinking every day amid a flood of digital information, today’s entrepreneur is increasingly confronted with opportunities to consider new ways to secure vendors and recruit customers. Many unfamiliar possibilities emerge. Should the entrepreneur venture beyond “comfortable” surroundings to consider international connections? Specifically, what about China? How practical is this fetching business temptation of larger markets and lower-cost subcontractors? What are the social, trade, financial, and political issues? Should a “China strategy” be a true entrepreneurial offensive, or rather a …

Is Time Spent, Passed Or Counted? The Missing Link Between Time And Accounting History, Paolo Quattrone Jan 2005

Is Time Spent, Passed Or Counted? The Missing Link Between Time And Accounting History, Paolo Quattrone

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper takes its inspiration from Voth's [2000] work on Time and Work in England, 1750-1830 which argues that the British industrial revolution led to greater production levels not because of an increase in the productivity of labor but because of the larger amount of hours worked per week. This change led to a decrease of free time in favor of worked time. If this was the case, one might argue, accounting played a marginal role either in increasing the efficiency of the work force, or in disciplining the shop floor to guarantee control of the labor process. This paper …

Constructing The Well Qualified Chartered Accountant In England And Wales, Malcolm Anderson, John Richard Edwards, Roy A. Chandler Jan 2005

Constructing The Well Qualified Chartered Accountant In England And Wales, Malcolm Anderson, John Richard Edwards, Roy A. Chandler

Accounting Historians Journal

Fundamental to the pursuit of the professional project by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), in the early years of its existence, was the construction of the well qualified chartered accountant. This involved the introduction of onerous examinations, lengthy vocational training and significant financial hurdles, which together confined membership to the wealthier sections of society. Prior studies concentrate on the external implications of the ICAEW's policies, and have accepted, though left unexamined, the significance of entry hurdles in achieving exclusionary closure. The major focus of this paper is to examine how the ICAEW differentiated its membership …

Bordazar Memorandum: Cost Calculation In Spanish Printing During The 18th Century, Jesus Martinez Guillen Jan 2005

Bordazar Memorandum: Cost Calculation In Spanish Printing During The 18th Century, Jesus Martinez Guillen

Accounting Historians Journal

Since the first printers settled in Castile, books were regulated as a basic necessity and their retail prices were controlled. The bestselling works were sacred prayer books. The printing monopoly in Castile was enjoyed by a Flemish workshop (Plantin). In 1732 Antonio Bordazar de Artazu, authored, printed and distributed to the authorities a Memorandum in which he tried to prove that Spanish printers were able to print books at lower prices and still maintain quality standards. This Memorandum presented a costing model, and provides an early example of the use of cost accounting to challenge a monopoly in Spain.

Regional Co-Operation And Low-Cost Investment Enclaves: An Empirical Study Of Singapore's Industrial Parks In Riau, Indonesia, Caroline Yeoh, Darren Lim, Adeline Kwan Jan 2005

Regional Co-Operation And Low-Cost Investment Enclaves: An Empirical Study Of Singapore's Industrial Parks In Riau, Indonesia, Caroline Yeoh, Darren Lim, Adeline Kwan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Infrastructure can be unreliable and administration subject to corruption in Asia's rapidly developing economies. Foreign investment is thus drawn to privileged investment enclaves, as well as in and around centers of international infrastructure. This context provides opportunity for Singapore-styled industrial parks, through the provision of superior infrastructure, the ability to negotiate investment concessions at inter-government level and, where existing, through the links to influential Chinese business groups in the investment location. Batamindo Industrial Park and Bintan Industrial Estate in Indonesia were the prototypes. This paper revisits the Parks, and offers a stock-take on the challenges confronting these flagship projects. Evidence …

Economic Welfare Change In Poor Neighborhoods, Lulu Kevin Wang Jan 2005

Economic Welfare Change In Poor Neighborhoods, Lulu Kevin Wang

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This paper provided investigation on economic welfare changes in poor neighborhoods in U.S. central cities during the 1990's. Using Census data for 1990 and 2000, this study found that the association between changes in family median income of poor neighborhoods and changes in family median income of their metropolitan areas was not statistically significant. The empirical evidence indicated that welfare changes in poor neighborhoods were detached from those of their metropolitan areas. The study also tested the correlation between the changes in family income level and other economic factors in poor neighborhoods during 1990's. The test results suggest that government …

Complex System Transformation: A System Of Systems Engineering (Sose) Perspective, Charles B. Keating, Andres Sousa-Poza, Samuel Kovacic

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to develop a perspective for complex system transformation from a System of Systems Engineering (SoSE) viewpoint. This is a first attempt to make explicit a SoSE viewpoint on complex system transformation. As such, the formulation is intended to escalate the dialog and integrate the current state of understanding with respect to the nature, utility, and implications of complex system transformation in SoSE terms. To achieve our purpose we will: (1) present a short introduction that provides an essential background for SoSE, (2) provide five fundamental systems concepts that underlie a SoSE perspective of complex …

Evolving Food Marketing Systems In Recovering Economies: Some Lessons From Croatia’S Gavrilović And Emerging ‘Oldies-But-Goodies’, Clifford J. Shultz, Biljana Crnjak-Karanović, Sanda Renko

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

A well-functioning food marketing system contributes greatly to domestic socio-economic development and global connectivity during periods of recovery and/or transition. Gavrilović, an established and historically successful company, i.e., an “Oldie-but-Goody,” is a case study in survival and adaptation; ultimately perhaps a model for other food marketing companies that must overcome rigorous geographical, social, political and economic challenges. This paper discusses food marketing systems and their development, provides a brief overview of Croatia’s food marketing system, and shares some lessons and best practices from Gavrilović.

Strategic Management For Economic Development: Remaking The Singapore 'Model', Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred Pow Ngee How Jan 2005

Strategic Management For Economic Development: Remaking The Singapore 'Model', Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred Pow Ngee How

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The dynamics of international economic competition have far-reaching policy implications for both developing and developed countries. Established industrial and trade policy regimes in most countries are under tremendous strain, and this applies even to the dynamic Newly Industrialising Economies (NIEs). The outward-oriented development strategies of the Asian NIEs, which once seemed unbeatable, have run up against protectionist barriers in the developed countries, and increasingly, against competitive pressures from other up and coming developing countries. Governments in these NIEs have had to re-examine accustomed policies and strategies, and search for alternative strategies and programs, in order to re-position their economies for …
