Marketing An End To War: Constructive Engagement, Community Wellbeing, And Sustainable Peace, Clifford J. Shultz Dec 2016

Marketing An End To War: Constructive Engagement, Community Wellbeing, And Sustainable Peace, Clifford J. Shultz

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Markets and marketing are integral to human welfare and survival. When used however for the purposes of war and other systemically violent conflict, they can be devastating and pose an existential threat to humanity. Drawing on experience in war-ravaged and recovering economies, the author examines a stream of research on marketing systems disrupted or destroyed by war. Some underlying conditions and predictors of war and its peaceful resolution are introduced, including social traps and their mitigation or elimination. An argument is revisited for marketing as a form of constructive engagement, which must be implemented to affect and to develop equitable …

Incorporating Experiential Theory Into Virtual Strategic Planning Processes, Chris Perkins Dec 2016

Incorporating Experiential Theory Into Virtual Strategic Planning Processes, Chris Perkins

Capstone Collection

Experiential learning theories, such as David Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle (2015) contribute to more than just learning environments. In this Training Course Linked Capstone I facilitated a six-week strategic planning workshop for the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group (DIAG) of AFS-USA, an intercultural youth exchange organization. Kolb’s cycle acted as framework for the workshop. The DIAG operates as a virtual team, with members across the United States, therefore I designed the workshop for implementation via the internet and telephone conversation. I consulted research on virtual team structure and participatory practices in strategic planning in order to design a program which …

Effects Of Negative Online Word-Of-Mouth On Consumer Evaluations Of An Underdog Brand, Anja P. Luethi

Senior Honors Theses

Research on underdogs has suggested that consumers feel sympathy for and a desire to support the underdog. However, it is unclear how their evaluations of the underdog will change if they receive negative information about it. The current research aims to explore the role of negative word-of-mouth of the underdog, compared to the top dog, in consumers’ brand attitude, brand value, and purchase intention. Specifically, drawing on two streams of research, two competing hypotheses are proposed and tested. An experiment was conducted with online consumer panel members. Consistent with confirmation bias and familiarity principle, the results supported a hypothesis that …

Designing Technical-Assistance Programs: Considerations For Funders And Lessons Learned, Jennifer Lyons, Sheila Dunleavy Hoag, Cara Orfield, Sonya Streeter Dec 2016

Designing Technical-Assistance Programs: Considerations For Funders And Lessons Learned, Jennifer Lyons, Sheila Dunleavy Hoag, Cara Orfield, Sonya Streeter

The Foundation Review

As foundations continue to provide grantees with technical assistance in addition to financial support, it is important to understand what works well, for whom, and in what circumstances. This reflective practice article aims to help funders who have identified a problem amenable to technical assistance to develop a strong program by providing support to a group of organizations addressing similar problems or by providing customized individual support.

Drawing on insights from evaluations of two technical-assistance programs, this article recommends five key issues for funders to consider when offering such a program: whose priorities will shape the agenda, how group composition …

As the nation’s only comprehensive nuclear research and development institute, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has long-standing experience developing and operating nuclear technology in all steps of the fuel cycle. The Integrated Support Center for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Nuclear Security (ISCN) was established within the JAEA in December 2010 as Japan’s Center of Excellence for nuclear security. The ISCN provides assistance with capacity building to states throughout Asia and some other regions. The objective of this article is to describe …

Capital Structure In The Family Firm: Exploring The Relationship Between Financial Sources And Family Dynamics, Diego G. Velez Nov 2016

Capital Structure In The Family Firm: Exploring The Relationship Between Financial Sources And Family Dynamics, Diego G. Velez

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

How a company structures its capital greatly affects its strategic options and its strategic decisions according to contemporary thinking. However, while there is ample literature on how publicly held companies’ capital should be structured, less is known about private companies. Additionally, one or more members of a single family typically own the majority of private companies, and unlike public companies, family dynamics influence these firms’ non-financial and financial goals and strategic decisions. This overlap of family dynamics into the business arena complicates conventional approaches or at least makes conventional approaches more difficult to apply.

This dissertation focuses on privately held, …

Creative Capitalism And Human Trafficking: A Business Approach To Eliminate Forced Labor And Human Trafficking From Global Supply Chains, Dana Raigrodski Nov 2016

Creative Capitalism And Human Trafficking: A Business Approach To Eliminate Forced Labor And Human Trafficking From Global Supply Chains, Dana Raigrodski

William & Mary Business Law Review

A great amount of revenue generated by businesses in the global economy can be linked to the trafficking and enslavement of human beings. Yet, the current discourse on human trafficking fails to recognize the magnitude of benefit consumers, businesses, and economies gain from the work of forced and trafficked labor. Moreover, the limited efforts that seek to address this situation have focused on ways to encourage businesses to voluntarily adopt more socially responsible practices. These measures have had only limited success, and are generally believed to be in tension with the for-profit purposes of businesses. Hence, the task of convincing …

E-Government Services Adoption And Interdependence: Granger Causality Analysis, Shashi Kant Srivastava, Sanjog Ray Nov 2016

E-Government Services Adoption And Interdependence: Granger Causality Analysis, Shashi Kant Srivastava, Sanjog Ray

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Adoption of e-government services varies across the different categories of services: government to citizen services, utility services, commercial services, informational services, social benefit services and mobile based services. Faced with constraint of resources, policy makers devising strategies for better adoption of these services face the challenge of prioritizing among these categories of services. This paper attempts to address this challenge by showing the applicability of Granger causality analysis in studying the causation analysis between the categories of e-government services. We prove the applicability of Granger causality analysis in understanding the independence between e-government service categories by analyzing real transactions data …

Informal Institutions And The Geography Of Innovation: An Integrative Perspective, Xuesong Geng, Kenneth G. Huang Nov 2016

Informal Institutions And The Geography Of Innovation: An Integrative Perspective, Xuesong Geng, Kenneth G. Huang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Integrating the insights from both institutional theory and economic geography, we develop a new conceptual framework to explain how formal and informal institutions in developing countries influence knowledge exchanges within and across geographical locations, thus affecting entrepreneurs’ and firms’ innovative behaviors and outputs. We suggest that the prevalence of informal institutions in developing countries increases the importance of geographic proximity for knowledge exchanges. At the same time, informal institutions provide alternative channels for maintaining non-local social interactions that facilitate knowledge exchanges among geographically distant firms. Using China as the context, we provide theoretical propositions that illustrate these mechanisms in terms …

Private Sector Emiratisation: Evaluating The Policies And Practices Designed To Achieve Abu Dhabi's Strategic Hrm Goal, Khaled Sultan Saeed Ai Kaabi Nov 2016

Private Sector Emiratisation: Evaluating The Policies And Practices Designed To Achieve Abu Dhabi's Strategic Hrm Goal, Khaled Sultan Saeed Ai Kaabi

Theses

The purpose of this study is two-fold: firstly, to gauge the job satisfaction levels of UAE nationals employed in the private sector and secondly to consider the HRM policies and procedures most likely to attract and retain such individuals. The issue is of contemporary importance because the UAE has a fast growing population, an already overstaffed public sector and, a labour nationalisation program that has yet to have a significant impact on the ratio of nationals employed in the private sector visà- vis the classic public sector. Using a combination of employee survey and expert interview feedback this study provides …

Stranded Assets: A Climate Risk, Ben Caldecott, Elizabeth Harnett, Theodor Florian Cojoianu, Irem Kok, Alexander Pfeiffer

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Over the last few years, the topic of "stranded assets" resulting from environment-related risk factors has loomed larger. These factors include the effects of physical climate change as well as societal and regulatory responses to climate change. Despite the increasing prominence of these stranded assets as a topic of significant interest to academics, governments, financial institutions, and corporations, there has been little work specifically looking at this issue in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). This is a significant omission, given the region's exposure to environment-related risk factors, the presence of extensive fossil fuel resources that may become "unburnable" given …

The Camino De Santiago De Compostela (Spain) And The Via Francigena (Italy): A Comparison Between Two Important Historic Pilgrimage Routes In Europe, Guido Lucarno Oct 2016

The Camino De Santiago De Compostela (Spain) And The Via Francigena (Italy): A Comparison Between Two Important Historic Pilgrimage Routes In Europe, Guido Lucarno

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The Italian section of the Via Francigena, a Medieval pilgrimage route to Rome, has not yet been commercialised to its full potential when compared to the Camino de Santiago in Spain. There are many reasons for this under development. First, there is an absence of a specialised organisation focused on utilising the resources available; a difficulty that could be overcome by the forming a tourism body with the specific charter for developing these resources and attracting tourism. Second, the weight of the cultural heritage of Rome in the contest for religious tourism takes away from the valorisation of other pilgrimage …

Ignatius Of Loyola’S Traces In Manresa. A New Incentive For Religious Tourism?, Joan Carles Llurdés, Francesc Romagosa

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The city of Manresa, located in the heart of Catalonia, has spent years trying to make profitable its cultural and urban heritage as a strategy for a better tourism positioning among other mid-sized cities that are competing for attracting tourists in an increasingly competitive global context. However, for various reasons the city has not been able to earn a place in Catalonia’s tourism scene, and it still remains in a preliminary tourism development stage. In this sense, the latest initiative taken by the city council has to do with its religious heritage, through the project ‘Manresa 2022’, which consists of …

Foreign Direct Investment (Fdi) Types And Theories: The Significance Of Human Capital, Nazmi Zeqiri, Hykmete Bajrami

UBT International Conference

One of the economic problems of undeveloped countries, and Kosovo, is that they do not have enough national savings to finance their investments. They are in constant need of foreign capital in forms of both direct and indirect investments, but not every country is able to attract the right mode of FDI, nor does every investor risks his investments without studying the conditions in the host country. The practice of FDI attraction generally incorporates numerous fiscal and monetary incentives. However, one should note that FDI attraction should be accompanied by development and an increase in the level of human capital, …

Media Influence On Opinion About Man-Made Global Warming As Moderated By Individual Ecological Orientation And Personal Experience, George W. Stone Dr.

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Abstract – The purpose of the study was to assess the opinions of two equal groups of QUALTRICS panelists, one having lived through a CAT 5 storm and the other not, on their respective beliefs about the effect man-made global warming has had on increasing the intensity of major weather events. The authors identified individuals in each group based on individual eco-orientation. The author then tested for opinion differences based on three factors related to eco-orientation as well as the role played by the media on influencing opinions related to man’s impact on increasing storm intensity

Identifying Opportunities To Inform And Inspire: Tribal Casino Employee Perceptions Of Tribal Self Sufficiency And Philanthropy, Sandra Sun-Ah Ponting Dr, Jess Ponting, Katherine Spilde

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

While the business case for employee engagement and satisfaction is well documented in the service profit chain and the cost savings of employee retention are easily quantified, the means to achieving these related goals in the casino industry is not well known. The pathway to employee engagement and satisfaction is even less well known in the tribal government gaming industry. This paper finds that employees in casinos that are owned by tribal governments in the United States find particular pride in sharing the tribal government’s self-sufficiency, community engagement, and philanthropic activities with casino guests, who often wonder “where the money …

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This work builds upon an analysis of regional universities that began in 2009, to build a geographically-based, quantifiable definition of the nation's regional universities. It builds on efforts begun by Katsinas (1993) to geographically map access oriented community colleges, which resulted in the geographic coding of Associate's Colleges as part of the 2005 and 2010 Basic Classification of Institutions of Higher Education published by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (Katsinas, Lacey, & Hardy, 2005).

Key findings

1. Wide variation in salaries and fringe benefits based upon geographic region served.
