Using Macro Archival Databases To Expand Theory In Micro Research, N. Sharon Hill, Herman Aguinis, Josiah Drewry, Sanjay Patnaik, Jennifer J. Griffin
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Databases containing macro-level data are an underutilized methodological tool for expanding theory in micro research (i.e., individual and team) to the macro (i.e., organizational and higher) level of analysis. We describe how macro archival databases support different theoretical approaches for upwardly expanding micro research and summarize unanswered research questions across micro domains requiring upward expansion. We describe 31 macro archival databases as a resource for testing research questions that upwardly expand theorizing in micro domains and how databases enable methodological best practices (i.e., data collection over time, multiple measures of a construct, multilevel statistical controls, missing data and outlier management) …

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020–2021 continues to impact all Utahns’ daily lives. Nationally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Pew Research Center, the Federal Reserve Bank, and sources such as the Wall Street Journal continue to report that women’s employment and careers have been disproportionately impacted during this time. Utah has seen similar negative impacts on working women. For example, the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah reported that from 2019 to 2020, jobs held by women declined at a rate more than double that of men, and unemployment rose more for females than males.
Essays On Markets With Frictions, Hyesung Yoo
Essays On Markets With Frictions, Hyesung Yoo
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I explore the implications of various forms of frictions on market outcomes.Specifically, I look at search frictions in two-sided markets, geographic frictions in a healthcare market, and the use of a machine learning approach in the presence of regulatory frictions. In the first chapter, I leverage the entry of a high-speed train system in South Korea as a natural experiment to establish the causal effect of competition between hospitals on health care quality and consumer welfare. Using a difference-in-differences estimator, we examine the effects of competition on hospitals depending on their proximity to train stations, notably how …
Racial Profiling: Understanding The Practice Of Stop-And-Frisk In New York City, Lisa Ly
Racial Profiling: Understanding The Practice Of Stop-And-Frisk In New York City, Lisa Ly
Spectra Undergraduate Research Journal
Racial profiling has become a prominent issue in modern policing today. Instead of being based on individual suspicion, racial profiling embodies a belief that people of color are continuously singled out by the police for scrutiny and harassment. Policies and procedures make the Black community vulnerable to police discrimination and racial profiling. Floyd et al. v. City of New York et al. (2013) declared that the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) practice of stop-and-frisk was racially profiling Black civilians. This study sought (1) to determine if the NYPD post-Floyd is still engaging in racial profiling towards Black civilians; and (2) …

How Did Homelessness Change During The Great Recession And Recovery?, Jenny Schuetz, Matthew Ring
How Did Homelessness Change During The Great Recession And Recovery?, Jenny Schuetz, Matthew Ring
Policy Briefs and Reports
Job losses from the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated housing insecurity among low-income renters over the past year. Federal, state, and local policymakers have created temporary measures to help reduce displacement among people who have lost their jobs, but there is considerable uncertainty about what will happen when these temporary measures end. To gain insight into how homelessness changes over macroeconomic cycles, we examine changes in homelessness rates from 2007 to 2020. Our analysis focuses on four metro areas that were particularly hard-hit by the foreclosure crisis: Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Riverside. Overall homelessness rates declined in all metros …
Catalysts And Impediments To Tax Increment Finance In Tulsa’S Historical African American Neighborhood, Bria A. Dixon
Catalysts And Impediments To Tax Increment Finance In Tulsa’S Historical African American Neighborhood, Bria A. Dixon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis assesses how Tulsa, Oklahoma grew to utilize tax increment financing (TIF) to produce economic activity in Tulsa’s historic downtown area. Specifically, how the creation, history, and maintenance of ONEOK Field, a $60 million, 6,000-seat sports venue in Tulsa’s historically African American neighborhood became the catalyst for Tulsa’s current TIF policy. In examining the fiscal outcomes of ONEOK Field, this thesis finds implications for inequitable investment in and around Tulsa’s Greenwood TIF district

A Bibliometric Content Analysis Of Do-It-Yourself (Diy) Science: Where To From Here For Management Research?, Peter Galvin, Anton Klarin, Richard Nyuur, Nicholas Burton
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Do-it-yourself (DIY) science research is currently in an expansion phase both in terms of its depth (with an increasing number of papers published each year) and its scope (with the core ideas being linked to an increasing number of constructs). To develop a more holistic appreciation of how the field has developed and to identify potential avenues of future research we undertake a bibliometric content analysis of the DIY science literature post 1980. We find four major clusters pertaining to education, culture, the operationalising of DIY science (including commercialisation) and technology-related issues. We review each of these clusters and the …

The Impact Of A Spill Or Pollution Accident On Firm Environmental Activity: An Empirical Investigation, Rick Hardcopf, Rachna Shah, Suvrat Dhanorkar
Management Faculty Publications
Spill and pollution (SP) accidents cause significant damage to the natural environment. They also result in financial costs and reputational losses for the offending firm. As such, understanding how firms respond to such crises is of significant interest to firm stakeholders, such as investors, customers, regulators, NGOs, employees, and local communities. In this study, we examine whether publicly disclosed SP accidents cause firms to alter their approach to environmental management, as expressed by the adoption of environmental management practices (EMPs). Using a unique panel data from 2002 to 2013, representing over 400 publicly-traded US manufacturing firms, we find that in …
An Examination Of Types Of Health Insurance And The Reported Prevalence Of Autism In The United States, Jennifer L. Thompson
An Examination Of Types Of Health Insurance And The Reported Prevalence Of Autism In The United States, Jennifer L. Thompson
Dissertations
The prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders continues to rise despite barriers of changes to diagnostic criteria and lack of insurance coverage. Increases in prevalence affect costs associated with a disorder since cost of health care services are often estimated based on utilization of services. This can also affect an individual’s ability to access to health care services. To equitably distribute autism services to individuals an accurate estimation of the true prevalence of autism is needed.
Access to health care can be influenced by the type of insurance coverage a person holds. Other factors, such as socio-economic status, ethnicity, location of …

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
The pandemic emergency has shifted the attention from a tourism focused on economic growth to a tourism focused on social wellbeing (Everingham & Chassagne, 2020). Destinations are required to answer new emerging needs in terms of health and safety without precluding the emotional side of the leisure travel experience. One of the ways destinations are rethinking their management is the introduction of innovation in terms of sharing knowledge, creation of new ideas and engagement of stakeholders (Pillmayer, Scherle & Volchek, 2021). Destinations need to strengthen their own networking of operators and relations to reduce risk perception and to ensure security …

Tourism related to religious sites and festivals, pilgrimage and spirituality is considered an extremely important sector of the tourism market. The true value of religious sites lies in supporting basic tourism products outside pilgrimage destinations, as churches, cathedrals and monasteries attract many visitors, including those who are not travelling for religious purposes only. For tourists who are not driven by religious motives, religious sites are no different than any other tourism attraction – they need to attract tourists’ attention in order for them to decide to include those sites in their future trip. Therefore, appropriate promotion of religious sites is …
