The Decomposition Principle In Engineering Problems: Towards A Multi-Level Concept Of Problem-Solving, Hamilton A. Chase, S. Sankar Sengupta Dec 1960

The Decomposition Principle In Engineering Problems: Towards A Multi-Level Concept Of Problem-Solving, Hamilton A. Chase, S. Sankar Sengupta

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The principal result of this report is a demonstration that systems of ordinary differential equations of engineering that are too large for the available computers can be solved by a principle of "decomposition." It is shown that the systems of resulting subproblems are members of a larger class of problems. The properties of this class are investigated and conditions stated under which the solutions of the subproblems converge to those of the original problem. A measure of the interaction between the subproblems is suggested for a subsequent investigation.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

WITH this number, THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY begins its second year of publication. Everything considered, the editors face the future with confidence. Subscription renewals have been coming in all summer, and even more important, unsolicited manuscripts from all over have been arriving with increasing frequency.

This first issue of Volume II contains articles on a variety of subjects of rather strong current interest. The editors have taken into account several incontestable facts in selecting these discussions for publication. This issue appears a short month before the American presidential election. This month marks the 125th anniversary of …

Some Economic, Engineering And Managerial Considerations Involved In Establishing A Quality Control Program, Laurence Snodgrass Sep 1960

Some Economic, Engineering And Managerial Considerations Involved In Establishing A Quality Control Program, Laurence Snodgrass

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

An accelerated technological tempo is notable in the demand expressions for military product. As performance requirements move toward ever increasing speeds, higher temperatures, higher strength-to-weight ratios, and miniaturization, the industrial complex exhibits a tendency toward specialized manufacture to meet these demands. There is a resultant multiplication in the complexity of the supplier-buyer relationship as a result of this specialization. Further, as new links are added to the chain of events involved between raw material and piece part manufacturing, through components and subcomponent design and manufacture to the complete system level, the communication network becomes correspondingly complex.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

WITH this number, THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY rounds out Volume I and in effect reaches a kind of maturity. Like the April issue, this fourth number moves our horizons further out by broadening the scope of material published. Once more the editors are able to offer a fairly wide variety of intellectual fare for our discerning readers. While the April issue saw us embark for the first time on the wine-dark sea of verse, this issue carries us further with contributions from two poets who write in the modem mood. And, manuscripts already in hand indicate, …

The Post-Basic Preparation Received By Administrative, Supervisory And Head Nurses In Six Hospitals, Margaret Josephine Patry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of this survey to find out what post-basic preparation the administrative, supervisory and head nurses had received for their positions in six Seventh-day Adventist hospitals. The descriptive survey was chosen as the method of approach in the study. An information card was devised to gather the data. A total of 190 or 81 percent of the 235 anticipated responses were returned. The recommended preparation for nurses in nursing service positions, as set forth by the American Nurses' Association in the Functions, Standards and Qualifications for Practice, was selected as the criteria by which this preparation was …

A Study Of Team Leader Activity On A Selected Medical Unit In A General Hospital, Margaret Elaine Schulhof

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to observe and analyze the activities of the nursing team leader on a selected medical unit of the Loma Linda Sanitarium and Hospital and to measure the percentage of time spent in each recognized function.

To accomplish this, the descriptive survey method was used. Six team leaders were "shadowed" by an. observer for a total of ten days. Record of all team leader activity was made on a specially prepared form which provided for classification of activity under Leino's six functions for the team leader. These are:

  1. To Identify the Patient's Nursing problems
  2. To …

An Analysis Of Supplier-Buyer Interdependence And Its Significance To Management In The Control Of Product Quality, John A. Larson Apr 1960

An Analysis Of Supplier-Buyer Interdependence And Its Significance To Management In The Control Of Product Quality, John A. Larson

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

In recognition of management's responsibility for assuring the required quality, timely delivery, and optimum cost of purchased material, this study develops and analyzes a technique for the scientific selection of suppliers. This technique is designed to determine the capability of suppliers to manufacture and deliver material in accordance with the buyer's requirements and specifications. By being able to differentiate between reliable and unreliable sources, the buyer has surmounted a major obstacle to the procurement of uniform product of satisfactory quality and reliability.

It is also the purpose of this study to develop and analyze a procedure for controlling supplier performance …

The Midwest Quarterly; Vol. 1 No. 3, David G. Barry, Jerome Cushman, Stuart Levine, Reed Schmickle, Clay P. Malick, Charles E. Guardia

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

THIS NUMBER of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY moves our horizons out beyond any previous measure. While our first two issues have contained solid material on a variety of subjects from a diversity of minds, the basic criticism of them has been that the Social Science area was somewhat overrepresented. Even a casual check of our contents will bear out this charge. Therefore, it is with considerable satisfaction and even relief that the editors offer this issue-with only one contribution from the Social Sciences. The scope of subject matter is broader in this issue than it has …
