The Red River Gorge: The Existence Of "Recreational Niches" And Their Management Implications, Sara E. Alexander, Billie R. Dewalt, Eugenie Scott

KWRRI Research Reports

Until the late 1960's, the Red River Gorge was just one of the more beautiful parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest. At this time, the Army Corps of Engineers proposed to dam the river for flood control, water supply, and recreation purposes. Intense opposition to the project generated considerable publicity and the Gorge area experienced substantial increases in visitation. The result has been not only severe environmental degradation but extensive overcrowding as well. These trends are presently overtaxing management capabilities of the United States Forest Service. The most pressing issue has come to be how to effectively manage this …

Use Of Knotted String Accounting Records In Old Hawaii And Ancient China, Lyle Elmer Jacobsen Jan 1983

Use Of Knotted String Accounting Records In Old Hawaii And Ancient China, Lyle Elmer Jacobsen

Accounting Historians Journal

The use of the "quipu" for accounting purposes has been primarily attributed to the Peruvian Inca culture in the days of old. Documented evidence, however, provides that early Hawaiians and ancient Chinese predated the Incan usage. Studies concentrating on the quipu as an accounting device rather than as an element in the evolution of the writing process might provide valuable contributions to the solution of the mystery surrounding this artifact. Insight into the development of mankind in the Pacific may be gained by understanding the use of the quipu in the East and West, and in Hawaii-- "meeting place" of …

The Canadian Harp Seal Hunt: A Moral Assessment, L. W. Sumner Jan 1983

The Canadian Harp Seal Hunt: A Moral Assessment, L. W. Sumner

Hunting Collection

The population of the harp seal, Pagophilus groenlandicus, is divided into three distinct breeding groups, which are centered on the White Sea, the Greenland Sea, and the northwest Atlantic. The last of these three populations, by far the largest, summers in the Arctic waters of Canada and west Greenland. In the autumn the animals in this group begin to migrate southward ahead of the advancing ice pack. By late February or early March, the females reach the breeding grounds off the coast of Newfoundland-Labrador (the Front) and near the Magdalen Islands (the Gulf). They then haul themselves out onto the …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

ARTHUR L. KALLEBERG assesses the recent, tentative attempts to reconcile Marxism with Christianity and concludes that proponents of both must make concessions to effect a more perfect union. Middlebush Professor of Political Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Kalleberg has published numerous scholarly articles in his discipline and is now at work on a book dealing with social justice.

Through a discussion of certain aspects of medieval history, JOHN M. THEILMANN examines the value for historians of symbolic anthropology and finds much to recommend a mutual sharing of the two approaches. Author of many papers …

The Origins Of The Occupational Safety And Health Act Of 1970, Patrick G. Donnelly Oct 1982

The Origins Of The Occupational Safety And Health Act Of 1970, Patrick G. Donnelly

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the emergence of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 and finds previous explanations of its origin inadequate. I trace the roots of this law to the protests of rank-and-file workers across the United States at a time when the support of these workers was particularly important to the two main political parties. The protest was directed not only at those employers who operated unsafe and unhealthy workplaces, but also at union officials who paid little or no attention to safety and health issues in negotiating new contracts.

The Value Of Antiquities: Historical Development And Evaluation Of Trends In The Current Market Through Graphic Analysis And Sales Data Compilation, Mary Thornton Holton Aug 1982

The Value Of Antiquities: Historical Development And Evaluation Of Trends In The Current Market Through Graphic Analysis And Sales Data Compilation, Mary Thornton Holton

Theses

The purpose of this project will be to examine some of the most central issues in the evaluation and methodology for valuing the category of fine arts known as antiquities. This category covers several historical periods and includes artifacts which originate anywhere in the present countries of Egypt, Greece, or Italy from 4000 BC in the pre-dynastic ages of Egypt through the various dynasties of the Pharaohs, through the Minoan, Mycenaean, Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic ages of Greece, and through the times when the Roman Empire rose and dominated practically the entire known world. The final date which defines antiquities …

The four-quarter-ahead forecasts of out-of-state domestic visitor arrivals for the third quarter of 1982 through the second quarter of 1983 are presented in the graph below and also in the table on the following page. These forecasts suggest that Florida visitor arrivals for all of 1982 will be off on the order of 1 ½ - 2 percent. This is approximately what was forecast for all of 1982 in the previous issue of the TOURISM BAROMETER.

Economics As A Cultural System, Raymond Benton Jr. Jun 1982

Economics As A Cultural System, Raymond Benton Jr.

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article is an attempt to think about economic theory. The vehicle for thinking about it will be anthropology's concept of culture; the end result will be to suggest that economics is a cultural system, more specifically, that economics is a sacred cultural system. In order to give expression to this view it will be necessary to first sketch the concept of culture as created and historically transmitted systems of symbols and meanings. The argument has been brief and suggestive rather than long and decisive; more exploratory than conclusive. If it is correct, or at least correct in its orientation, …

No Need To Be Boxed In: Group Pens And Grain For Veal Calves, Michael S. Mosner Jan 1982

No Need To Be Boxed In: Group Pens And Grain For Veal Calves, Michael S. Mosner

Agribusiness Collection

My family has been in the wholesale veal business for 30 years. The basis of this business has been various breeds of female beef calves that are slaughtered at less than 500 lb. These calves are allowed to suck from cows and graze until they are ready for market. Beef calves, however, tend to vary in quality and quantity depending on the tjme of the year that they are purchased and raised. Generally, calves become scarce in the spring, when feeders are buying calves to put out on pasture. Then, in the summer and fall, large numbers of calves usually …

A Survey Of Selected Employers And Placement Counselors To Determine Sociocultural Factors In The Work Adjustment Of Navajo Students In Box Elder County, Utah, Dolores M. Keller May 1980

A Survey Of Selected Employers And Placement Counselors To Determine Sociocultural Factors In The Work Adjustment Of Navajo Students In Box Elder County, Utah, Dolores M. Keller

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The primary goal of vocational education is to prepare the student to successfully enter the world of work. While the present educational structure seems to work well for most Anglo-American students, there is evidence that the system is not effective with minority students. For example , in the case of Navajo students in government-sponsored technical schools, the dropout rate (60 percent) suggests that for Native American students there are serious problems in the educational process which need to be investigated and understood.

Because of the sharply different cultural background of the Navajo student a formidable barrier frequently exists between student …
