The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

These are normal times, not crisis times, in the other-end-of-the-telescope view of MATTHEW MELKO, and we should value this age as such and use this insight to improve the lives of others and ourselves. A professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and a pioneer in worldview studies, Melko's essay here summarizes thoughts which will shortly be given book-length treatment by Paragon. This is Melko's second article in The Midwest Quarterly.

JON ROPER discusses the ethical dimension of democracy as it passed from the Greeks to Americans …

Medieval Traders As International Change Agents: A Comparison With Twentieth Century International Accounting Firms, Larry M. Parker Jan 1989

Medieval Traders As International Change Agents: A Comparison With Twentieth Century International Accounting Firms, Larry M. Parker

Accounting Historians Journal

The International Accounting Standards Committee's (IASC) exposure draft on "Comparability of Financial Statements" has increased the awareness of the need for international changes in accounting standards. Since the IASC cannot mandate these changes, the accounting community needs to learn how to communicate, adopt and implement changes. This paper discusses an important aspect of the change process, the change agent. The first part of the paper presents an historical example of an important group of international change agents, the Jewish traders of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Parallels are then drawn between the Medieval Jewish traders and modern international accounting …

Analysis Of Corporate Culture And Community Relations: A Case Study Of Ibm, Lisa V. Sukovaty-Gordon Jan 1989

Analysis Of Corporate Culture And Community Relations: A Case Study Of Ibm, Lisa V. Sukovaty-Gordon

Graduate Research Papers

The basis for study of corporate culture grew from prior sociological and anthropological research. Etzioni (1964) found organizations which incorporate human resource technique in establishing goals were least likely to alienate their employees and were likely to produce desired responses. Etzioni's method for determining an organization's goals was through "inspection of interviews, minutes from board meetings, organization documents, division of labor, and allocation of resources (1964, p.6)." The purpose of cultures as defined by Etzioni should be to "provide a supportive setting for developing modern organizations and theme worldliness (1964, p.108-109)."

A Study Of Productivity Levels Under Theory X And Theory Y Management Styles, Kevin R. Hranicka

Theses

This thesis will focus on management and the effect of management orientation and style upon work group productivity.

Researchers have attempted to find methods for managers to use to increase employee work output or productivity for decades. As early as the beginning of the nineteenth century industrialists were experimenting with different methods of operation and organization in the hopes of raising output levels and increasing worker satisfaction. In the last fifty years management styles and employee productivity have played an ever increasingly important role in the economy as society has continued to institutionalize its needs and its providers.

Self-Concept Competency Of National Aeronautics And Space Administration Research And Development Managers, Mark A. Beymer Jan 1989

Self-Concept Competency Of National Aeronautics And Space Administration Research And Development Managers, Mark A. Beymer

Dissertations and Theses

Boyatzis has stated that "true" management competencies are characteristics of a manager which differentiate superior from average and below average performance. Boyatzis, however, treats a manager's self-image (self-concept) as a "threshold" rather than a "real" competency. Lafferty's research, which has measured relationships between several lifestyle (self-concept) variables and corresponding organizational behavior, has found that performance differences between average and high performing managers are associated with differences in self-concept construction. The researcher proposes to treat variations in self-concept measurements from managers as indications of their relative management competency. Thisresearch investigates seventeen hypotheses relating to the self-concepts of high performing, mid-level technical …

Scottish Enlightenment And The Development Of Accounting, Michael J. Mepham Jan 1988

Scottish Enlightenment And The Development Of Accounting, Michael J. Mepham

Accounting Historians Journal

This article outlines the lives and background of the main writers who were active in the 18th century period of 'scottish Ascendancy' in accounting texts. The impressive publications produced by this group are detailed and the question of why this phenomenon should have occurred in Scotland is considered. It is suggested that the Scottish Ascendancy in accounting texts can be considered as part of the achievements of the Scottish Enlightenment and as complementary to the more renowned works in economics, law and philosophy, which are generally recognized as an important component of that movement.

Research at SMM consisted of exploratory research involving an unobtrusive observation of interpretive theatre programs performed at that museum and the effect of interpretive theatre on museum visitors. Particular attention was paid to the influence of theatre on children as the sample population for continued research at GSM was children ages 8-12. Subjects for this study were selected at random from the entirety of the sample population visiting the museum during the times of observation. Data recorded at SMM was compiled, …

Technology Transfer Between Developed And Developing Countries, Tenny Oghogho Ogbomo May 1986

Technology Transfer Between Developed And Developing Countries, Tenny Oghogho Ogbomo

Theses

The problems arising from technology transfer, in general, are not new. The problems of the East-West technology transfer, for example, are based on the risk that such transfers will enhance the military capability, or at least the military potential, of the trading partner. In the case of United States trade with the Soviet Union, it can be said that any accretion in the Soviet military capacity weighs against the United States in an overall world-wide balance of power. The restrictions and/or prohibition of such transfer of technology are problems themselves.

The North-South technology transfer, in other words, the technology transfer …
