GENERALLY SPEAKING, spring is a non-political season. Certainly, with the snow and ice melting away, the winds of March rattling the windows, and the elm buds burgeoning against the blue sky, political practice and theory seem to belong somewhere else in time and space. But, the news constantly, forceably, shockingly thrusts politics into eye, heart, mind, and viscera every day, whether that news comes from Saigon, Selma, Topeka, or Washington. Your American is first and foremost a political animal. If he isn't he needs to be. John Adams and Tom Jefferson understood this; Henry Thoreau …

Horticulture published reports
Revised 1965.
The Mediterranean type climate of the coastal belt of the south-west of Western Australia is suitable for the commercial production of apples, pears, various stone fruits, oranges, grapes, and several other less important fruits. The warm dry summers (November-March), are too severe for the profitable production of many berry fruits and the winters too cool and wet for most tropical fruits. Figs, mulberries and olives all flourish in this climate but, for economic reasons, few are grown commercially.
A small tropical fruit industry, mainly bananas, has been established along the banks of the Gascoyne River at Carnarvon, which …

Agriculture In Western Australia. 3. The Economic Potential Of The Wongan-Ballidu Shire. Part 1, G D. Oliver, A. W. Hogstrom
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
IN West Australian agriculture there is a considerable "backlog" of information available to farmers which is not being used in practical farming. This, of course, is true of agricultural industries anywhere in the world.
This "backlog" results in a big difference in productivity between the best farms and the "average" farms in each district.
This article is a simple economic study of the potential of one shire of Western Australia.
The Economic Potential Of The Wongan-Ballidu Shire. Part 2. Costs And Returns, G D. Oliver, A. W. Hogstrom
The Economic Potential Of The Wongan-Ballidu Shire. Part 2. Costs And Returns, G D. Oliver, A. W. Hogstrom
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE potential of the Wongan-Ballidu Shire to produce increased quantities of grain, wool, sheep and meat up to the year 2,000 was estimated and discussed in the first part of this article (see last issue).
In this second and final part the financial returns likely to accrue to the shire and the individual farmers as a result of these increases are discussed.
Recording Figures Are No Check On Factory Returns, R A. Bettenay
Recording Figures Are No Check On Factory Returns, R A. Bettenay
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
MANY dairy farmers who use Grade Herd Recording are in the habit of comparing their Grade Herd Recording results with returns obtained from a factory.
Where the two returns show some discrepancy the inference drawn always appears to be that whichever credits the herd with the lower return is at fault—either "the recorder is not doing the job properly" or "the factory is robbing the farmer of his just returns."
Impact Of Technology On Labor, Allan Jeong Wong
Impact Of Technology On Labor, Allan Jeong Wong
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It is not the intent of this paper to contribute to the body of technological knowledge nor even to report on it at length, but to investigate in one area the important economic and social effect caused by technological progress. It is the intent of this study to answer or at least throw some light on the problem of the technological impact on labor.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
in this issue. . .
FOLLOWING the pattern of a year ago, this is our summer literary issue. Whether we can set it down as a hard and fast rule that every future summer issue will be literary, it is impossible to say at this writing. Our five years of publishing experience indicate that we can expect to continue to receive an abundance of manuscripts treating literary subjects--probably at a ratio of three to two over all other subjects. This makes it relatively easy if not down right good sense to devote at least one issue a year to literature. …

Animal Shelter Programs And Policies, Edwin J. Sayres
Animal Welfare Collection
A discussion of policies and programs that, ideally, should be followed by humane societies in the operation of shelters and the limitations that are imposed by finances, local circumstances, and other factors is a substantial undertaking. I would like, first, to give you some background information about St. Hubert's Giralda and hope that what I have to say will contribute something to people confronted with the problems of shelter management and animal control programs.
Our methods and approach were basically acquired from material available through national and state organizations in this field. We are especially indebted to the Union County …

Breeding Records For Dairy Cattle, P B. Lewis
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A N Y business needs records to show up inefficiencies and to indicate where and/or when danger points are being reached.
One record which can be of much use to the dairy farmer is the cow breeding record.

An Assessment Of Cattle Husbandry Problems In Western Australia, W J O Wilkie
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE science of animal husbandry deals with all those things which affect the welfare and productivity of our domestic animals.
The relative emphasis placed on welfare and productivity depends on whether the animals are kept as pets or for profit.

Does Herd Recording Help Farmers Improve Husbandry, Maurice C. Cullity
Does Herd Recording Help Farmers Improve Husbandry, Maurice C. Cullity
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE proportion of the dairy herds throughout Australia that are being production recorded is low.
This is particularly surprising when the large amount of propaganda encouraging farmers to herd test is considered.
