Land Conservation And Land Use In New England: Trends, Challenges & Opportunities, Amanda Loomis, Tom Devine, Andrea Small, Brittany Howard, Brett Richardson, Stephanie Dulac Jun 2009

Land Conservation And Land Use In New England: Trends, Challenges & Opportunities, Amanda Loomis, Tom Devine, Andrea Small, Brittany Howard, Brett Richardson, Stephanie Dulac

Land Conservation

Sprawling development patterns accelerated across the New England landscape in the last three decades and consumed the region‘s forests, farms, and open spaces at an unprecedented rate. New England‘ers in all six states formed land trusts, supported statewide conservation organizations, and collaborated with state and federal partners to protect some of their most-prized recreation lands, wildlife habitats, and working lands. The current economic recession has slowed development pressures across the region and offers an opportunity to build on recent successes. The time is right to plan a coordinated New England conservation strategy that protects and links the region‘s natural assets. …

Experiential Retailing: Extraordinary Store Environments And Purchase Behavior, Alana Nicole Garvin Jun 2009

Experiential Retailing: Extraordinary Store Environments And Purchase Behavior, Alana Nicole Garvin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine how store atmospherics affect purchase behavior in experiential stores. It extended the Donovan et al. study, “Store Atmosphere and Purchasing Behavior” (1994), by determining the levels of pleasure and arousal in an experiential store and the affects on unplanned spending and unplanned time spent in the store. This was done by measuring customers’ emotions five minutes into the shopping experience and comparing planned amount of time and money spent to the actual amounts. The findings of this study showed that higher levels of pleasure and arousal did not affect unplanned time and …

The Relationship Between Psychological Capital And Social Venture Program Initiation, Paul L. Van Putten Ii Jun 2009

The Relationship Between Psychological Capital And Social Venture Program Initiation, Paul L. Van Putten Ii

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Entrepreneurship is viewed as one of the greatest sources of societal productivity in cultural history (Spinosa, Flores, & Dreyfus, 1999), and recently social entrepreneurship has become an increasingly viable method for not-for-profit organizations to garner profit through implementing community enhancing programs (Hopkins, 2005, Morial, 2006; Wickham, 2005).

Literature suggests that psychological capital has an impact on an entrepreneurial administrators' ability to implement new programs, but few studies have investigated the relationship between the not-for-profit administrators' psychological capital and their ability to initiate social venture programs (Jensen & Luthans, 2006; Olson, & Bosserman, 2001).

This dissertation study developed a theoretical framework …

New-School Trademark Dilution: Famous Among The Juvenile Consuming Public, Alexandra J. Roberts Jun 2009

New-School Trademark Dilution: Famous Among The Juvenile Consuming Public, Alexandra J. Roberts

Law Faculty Scholarship

The recently enacted Trademark Dilution Revision Act of 2006 recalibrated the degree of fame necessary to garner protection: the TDRA applies only to a mark "widely recognized by the general consuming public of the United States as a designation of source of the goods or services of the mark’s owner." By privileging those major players who succeed in turning their brands into household names, the TDRA strengthens incentives for mark-owners to ensure their logos and brand names are well-recognized not only among adult consumers, but also among children. This Article examines a set of marketing behaviors aimed at children that …

Why Should Investors Stay Positive On The Asian Real Estate Markets?, Knowledge@Smu Jun 2009

Why Should Investors Stay Positive On The Asian Real Estate Markets?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Asia’s real estate market has weakened in tandem with lower equity prices. Singapore is no exception. Gone (for now) is the frenzied buying that marked 2007 and 2008, as everyone hunkers down for a possible protracted slump in the global economy. Many property buyers are caught with assets declining in value. Should investors thus stay away from Asia’s property market? What are the challenges facing the industry players, and is there a recovery on the horizon?

Exponential Growth, Animal Welfare, Environmental And Food Safety Impact: The Case Of China’S Livestock Production, Peter J. Li Jun 2009

Exponential Growth, Animal Welfare, Environmental And Food Safety Impact: The Case Of China’S Livestock Production, Peter J. Li

Agribusiness Collection

Developmental states are criticized for rapid “industrialization without enlightenment.” In the last 30 years, China’s breathtaking growth has been achieved at a high environmental and food safety cost. This article, utilizing a recent survey of China’s livestock industry, illustrates the initiating role of China’s developmental state in the exponential expansion of the country’s livestock production. The enthusiastic response of the livestock industry to the many state policy incentives has made China the world’s biggest animal farming nation. Shortage of meat and dairy supply is history. Yet, the Chinese government is facing new challenges of no less a threat to political …

Cow Comfort In Tie-Stalls: Increased Depth Of Shavings Or Straw Bedding Increases Lying Time, C. B. Tucker, D. M. Weary, M. A. G. Von Keyserlingk, K. A. Beauchemin

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

Over half of US dairy operations use tie-stalls, but these farming systems have received relatively little research attention in terms of stall design and management. The current study tested the effects of the amount of 2 bedding materials, straw and shavings, on dairy cattle lying behavior. The effects of 4 levels of shavings, 3, 9, 15, and 24 kg/stall (experiment 1, n = 12), and high and low levels of straw in 2 separate experiments: 1, 3, 5, and 7 kg/stall (experiment 2, n = 12) and 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 kg/stall (experiment 3, n = 12) were …

Not Just A Party In The Parking Lot: An Exploratory Investigation Of The Motives Underlying The Ritual Commitment Of Football Tailgaters, Jenna M. Drenten, Cara Okleshen Peters, Thomas Leigh, Candice R. Hollenbeck

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This study examines the underlying motives within the ritual of football tailgating and the influence of these motives on ritual commitment. Employing an ethnographic approach, methods include participant observation, informal conversations, and formal interviews. Findings indicate that four basic motivations and the dual nature of these motives perpetuate the tailgating ritual: involvement (preparation and participation), social interaction (camaraderie and competition), inter-temporal sentiment (retrospection and prospection), and identity (collectivism and individualism). The data illustrate that the duality of these motives perpetuates consumers’ commitment to the ritual of tailgating and thus motivates participants to continue tailgating over time. Theoretical and sport marketing …

Ethics, Evidence And International Debt, Julie A. Nelson Jun 2009

Ethics, Evidence And International Debt, Julie A. Nelson

Economics Faculty Publication Series

The assumption that contracts are largely impersonal, rational, voluntary agreements drawn up between self-interested individual agents is a convenient fiction, necessary for analysis using conventional economic methods. Papers prepared for a recent conference on ethics and international debt were shaped by just such an assumption. The adequacy of this approach is, however, challenged by evidence about who is affected by international debt, how contracts are actually made and followed, the behavior of actors in financial markets, and the motivations of scholars themselves. This essay uses insights from feminist and relational scholarship from several disciplines to analyze the reasons for this …

A Final Assessment Of Stages Theory: Introducing A Dynamic States Approach To Entrepreneurship, Jonathan Levie, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein Jun 2009

A Final Assessment Of Stages Theory: Introducing A Dynamic States Approach To Entrepreneurship, Jonathan Levie, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein

College of Management Working Papers and Reports

Stages of Growth models were the most frequent theoretical approach to understanding entrepreneurial business growth from 1962 to 2006; they built on the growth imperative and developmental models of that time. An analysis of the universe of such models (N=104) published in the management literature shows no consensus on basic constructs of the approach, nor is there any empirical confirmations of stages theory. However, by changing two propositions of the stages models, a new dynamic states approach is derived. The dynamic states approach has far greater explanatory power than its precursor, and is compatible with leading edge research in entrepreneurship.

Tax Competition In The Film Industry, Chelsea Villareal Jun 2009

Tax Competition In The Film Industry, Chelsea Villareal

Anthós

Being one of the largest industries in the world, the film industry remains an economic powerhouse in our society. It’s for this reason that film’s messages are not the only political aspects of their creation. Senators and representatives across the country are increasingly seeing the film industry as key towards economic development. With incentive packages being placed around the country, the politics over the film industry have become an overwhelming power game. Politicians are being threatened with recalls and impeachment to keep their economies afloat during harsh economic times. Without raising taxes, representatives have hit a wall. Increasing debt and …

Consumer Show Visitors: A Case Study , Kara Grau Jun 2009

Consumer Show Visitors: A Case Study , Kara Grau

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

Tourism marketers often have a difficult time trying to weigh the costs and benefits of exhibiting at consumer shows. What defines success at a consumer show is different for each exhibitor, so a show that has great potential for one exhibitor may not be worth the effort and expense for another. In light of this, this case study was undertaken in an effort to answer several questions about attendees of the Washington Sportsmen’s Show, held in Puyallup, Washington in January, 2009.

When The Negotiator Sees Red, Jayanth Narayanan, Jochen Reb, Jianwen Chen, Xue Zheng Jun 2009

When The Negotiator Sees Red, Jayanth Narayanan, Jochen Reb, Jianwen Chen, Xue Zheng

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The negotiations literature abounds with studies about how cognitive heuristics affect negotiation outcomes. However, the role of colors in negotiations remains unexplored. The color red is associated with male dominance and leads to superior outcomes in sporting contests (Hill and Barton, 2005a). In this study, we examined the effect of wearing the color red on outcomes in distributive negotiations. Our findings revealed that when male negotiators wore red clothing, they gained a distributive advantage over their counterpart wearing white.

Exploring Calvin And Hobbes: Comic Strip Illuminates Issues Surrounding Family Recreation, Christijan D. Draper

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to inductively examine the content of the popular comic strip Calvin and Hobbes by analyzing its latent and subjective meaning to discover basic social psychological issues associated with family recreation. The entire collection of 1,360 Calvin and Hobbes strips was evaluated using Grounded Theory techniques influenced by the art scholarship evaluation tool iconography. Review of the strip suggests one way to assess the meaning associated with time use is through preemptive retrospection by which a person looks at current experiences through the lens of an anticipated future to estimate how meaningful that time will …

Lost In Translation: Emotion And Expression Through Technology, Shaylyn Joy May 2009

Lost In Translation: Emotion And Expression Through Technology, Shaylyn Joy

Honors Scholar Theses

My Thesis study was designed to bring to topic certain issues involved with CMC (computer-mediated communication.) Often we are presented with confusing or misleading situations when it comes to expressing our emotions through technological means. It is important that we are aware of certain issues such as the use of emoticons, expressing sarcasm, and the ongoing trend of Internet slang. These various aspects can create confusion in CMC, leading to a loss in translation. My survey study was designed to probe deeper into these issues by asking general questions and by analyzing sample CMC scenarios.

Color Rhetoric: The Social Construction Of Neutrality In Real Estate Design, April Davis May 2009

Color Rhetoric: The Social Construction Of Neutrality In Real Estate Design, April Davis

All Theses

Many interior designers believe that the key to selling a house is using conventionally labeled neutral colors. Yet, in relying solely on what convention dictates as a universal real estate rule, designers are promoting an ideology that privileges conventional standards to audience analysis, and consequently, call into question the usefulness of their own careers. Using Lloyd Bitzer's rhetorical situation principles, this thesis will analyze pictures taken from homes on the real estate market. Examining these pictures will establish the concept of neutrality as a rhetorical social construction that is shaped within historical, social, and cultural contexts. Moreover, this thesis presents …

A Choice Model Approach To Business And Leisure Traveler's Preferences For Green Hotel Attributes, Michelle Millar May 2009

A Choice Model Approach To Business And Leisure Traveler's Preferences For Green Hotel Attributes, Michelle Millar

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

There has been an increase in environmental concern by travelers in the United States (U. S.). As a result, hospitality companies are taking note and have begun to incorporate environmentally friendly or green practices into their operations. What remains relatively unclear, though, is if the increase in environmental consciousness has translated into a demand for environmentally friendly tourism products, such as hotels. There are a few studies related to the demand for environmentally friendly hotel attributes, but none of them have looked at a bundle of environmentally friendly attributes and how customers would react to a hotel room incorporating not …
