A Case For Developing Spiritual Intelligence In Leaders Through Equine Facilitated Learning, Cora Maziere, Olen Gunnlaugson Jan 2015

A Case For Developing Spiritual Intelligence In Leaders Through Equine Facilitated Learning, Cora Maziere, Olen Gunnlaugson

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Unpredictable circumstances, growing stresses in an ever-increasing global market, and ubiquitous ennui have left organizations and today’s leaders in government, industry, and academia without the necessary tools to transition to change in a principled manner. The authors explain that the development and maintenance of genuine leadership skills — adaptive to the dictates of the modern world — must be borne from one’s inner self, a retreat to spirituality. One available method of achieving this is through Equine Facilitated Experiential Learning (EFEL), a technique whereby leaders develop critical management skills by working with horses.

The Road To 60 Years And Beyond: How The Emotions Of A Leader Drive Sustainable Brand Growth, Roy Gifford Jan 2015

The Road To 60 Years And Beyond: How The Emotions Of A Leader Drive Sustainable Brand Growth, Roy Gifford

Student Scholarship

Ad spending is expected to reach $545 billion by the end of 2014. Despite the tremendous resources allocated to marketing, brand deaths still occur (e.g., Oldsmobile, Trans World Airlines, Plymouth, and Woolworth Stores). Yet, some brands 60 years and older (e.g., John Deere) have remained relevant across generations of consumers. We call these heritage brands. We define a heritage brand as a brand that (1) is at least 60 years old, (2) is authentic, (3) is trusted, (4) has strong brand recognition, and (5) has the ability to generate brand stories. To date, no literature addresses the behaviors of leaders …

Enhancing The Cohesiveness Of A Cognitive Diverse Team: The Role Of Leadership, Upatham Atiwate Jan 2015

Enhancing The Cohesiveness Of A Cognitive Diverse Team: The Role Of Leadership, Upatham Atiwate

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have been interested in the concepts of leadership, cognitive diversity, and team cohesiveness and much research has been done in these areas separately. The uniformity of the topics is still lacking in terms of the relationship among these variables. This research set out to explore the relationship between cognitive diversity and team cohesiveness as it was enhanced by the different leadership characteristic traits. These leadership characteristic traits consisted of charisma, individualism, and empowerment. The multiple regression analysis method was used to study the relationship among these variables. Based upon data collected from a sample of 1,015 participants in six …

Naturalness Of Ontology Concepts For Rating Aspects Of The Semantic Web, Yoo Jung An, Kuo-Chuan Huang, James Geller Jan 2015

Naturalness Of Ontology Concepts For Rating Aspects Of The Semantic Web, Yoo Jung An, Kuo-Chuan Huang, James Geller

Communications of the IIMA

The Semantic Web is expected to be the next generation of the WWW. Ontologies and agents are major ingredients of the Semantic Web. In (Lee and Geller 2005), we have argued that some existing ontologies make use of unnatural concepts. We stated that unnatural concepts make it difficult to use an ontology and they contradict the purpose of an ontology, which includes explanatory power for the purpose of sharing information. In this paper we elaborate what makes a concept unnatural. We also analyze existing ontologies to get numeric measures of how natural their concepts are.

Evaluating The Usability Of Union Web Sites In The United States: A Case Study, Christopher M. Lowery, Nicholas A. Beadles Ii

Communications of the IIMA

Union membership has undergone a dramatic decline and some have hailed the internet as a means for unions to reverse their membership declines. This study examines the usability of union websites. The content of union websites has been analyzed, but the usefulness of that content, and the overall usability of the websites, has not been assessed. In order for unions to fully utilize the internet and realize the potential benefits of cyberspace usage, they must provide websites that users find easy to use and that provide useful content. This study employs Hassan and Li's (2005) benchmarking approach in order to …

With the recent advances in telecommunications networking and teleconferencing software, small companies can become more cost competitive by outsourcing appropriate functions to lower wage countries. Ad-Station Systems is a startup media advertising company that provides a number of online and off-line advertising services. The online product offering requires support and programming. It was decided to evaluate whether these functions could be provided from a foreign location. An industrial dynamics model indicated that this is a viable option. The processes were designed and documented, and are described here.

Understanding Cyberspace Addictive Behavior With The Critical Social Theory, Ook Lee Jan 2015

Understanding Cyberspace Addictive Behavior With The Critical Social Theory, Ook Lee

Communications of the IIMA

This paper presents an application of the Critical Social Theory (GST) in understanding cyberspace behavior. CST can be used as one of qualitative methodologies in IS research. However most prior IS research utilized a very narrowly drawn insight from CST without historical and social context considered. This study tries to apply a general concept of CST for the purpose of providing plausible explanation for cyberspace behavior. CST identifies unjust conditions and tries to find the cause through critical reflection, which eventually might lead to emancipation of people. In this paper, a cyberspace behavior case of a relatively developed country where …

Rfids: From Invention To Innovation, Susan Foster, Helana Scheepers, Nasrin Rahmati

Communications of the IIMA

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology was invented nearly 60 years ago during the 2"^ World War. However it has only been relatively recently that RFID technology adoption has been headlined in the popular press. With strategic business drivers such as supply chain management and e-commerce initiatives, and the need for increased value from improvements in product tracking, together with a push from consumers and regulatory demands for safe product handling, attention has focused on the adoption of RFID technology. This paper reviews the available literature on RFID technology and develops a four- phase RFID innovation diffusion adoption model which builds on …

Measuring The Accessibility Of The U.S. State Government Web Sites, Jennifer Daniels White, Tanya Goette, Dale Young

Communications of the IIMA

Web accessibility has become an important issue since the dramatic rise in the use of the Web. Web accessibility deals with overcoming barriers users with disabilities face when trying to access information on Web sites. The U.S. has passed laws relating to Web accessibility to improve the usability of the Internet for disabled users. Technical advancements have improved assistive tools such as page readers for users with disabilities, but accessibility requires more than assistive tools. Web page design causes many accessibility problems. This study examines the accessibility of the home pages of the official government Web sites of the 50 …

A Taxonomy Of Mis, David Majd Jan 2015

A Taxonomy Of Mis, David Majd

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

A perusal of the management information systems (MIS) literature or attendance at a major conference calls attention to the diversity of the discipline and the need to have some larger frame of reference in which to understand MIS research. This paper utilizes two MIS research frameworks to demonstrate the role of integrative thought in understanding and guiding MIS research. A literature review is used to support the claim that the benefits of improved recall, more effective hypothesis generation, wiser allocation of research resources and better interdisciplinary communication can result from the use of these frameworks. [Published circa 1988-1990.]

A Taxonomy Of Simulation Languages For Design And Analysis Of Computer-Integrated Manufacturing Systems, Arnold Reisman, Henry C. Co, Albert Wu Jan 2015

A Taxonomy Of Simulation Languages For Design And Analysis Of Computer-Integrated Manufacturing Systems, Arnold Reisman, Henry C. Co, Albert Wu

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Simulation is a very robust and versatile system analysis technique. However, many common functionalities of the simulation methodology are not available in general-purpose computer languages. Model building is usually a tedious, time-consuming, and error-prone process. To alleviate these problems, special-purpose simulation languages have been developed to support system analysts. This paper presents a taxonomy of special-purpose simulation languages, with emphasis on their applications in designing and analyzing Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS). [Likely published circa 1990?]

Impact Of Freight Traffic On School Walking Decisions In Urban Environments, Stephanie S. Ivey, Marian Levy, Marla B. Royne, Kelsey Ford, Kranthi Guthikonda Jan 2015

Impact Of Freight Traffic On School Walking Decisions In Urban Environments, Stephanie S. Ivey, Marian Levy, Marla B. Royne, Kelsey Ford, Kranthi Guthikonda

Journal of Transportation Management

In light of the decline in social acceptance of walking and biking to school, there is a critical need to examine issues impacting school transportation decisions and to identify strategies to promote healthier behavior. In urban areas with high volume freight corridors, factors affecting school walking decisions can be complicated by increased truck and rail traffic. This paper presents findings from a study of urban neighborhoods in a major southeastern city, including those that are adjacent to freight corridors. Perceptions of neighborhood residents are compared in the context of existing infrastructure and network characteristics (urban vs. urban freight-centric). The results …

Being Good For Goodness Sake: The Influence Of Family Involvement On Motivations To Engage In Small Business Social Responsibility, Whitney O. Peake, Philip E. Davis, Marcus Z. Cox Jan 2015

Being Good For Goodness Sake: The Influence Of Family Involvement On Motivations To Engage In Small Business Social Responsibility, Whitney O. Peake, Philip E. Davis, Marcus Z. Cox

Faculty Publications

Small family and nonfamily firms are acknowledged to serve as important facilitators of social responsibility within their communities; however, both have received relatively little attention in the literature for these efforts or their motivation for undertaking them. Grounded in Enlightened Self-Interest (ESI) and intentions, we explore motivations for participation in socially responsible behaviors and the moderating effect of family involvement. We develop measures for small business social responsibility (SBSR), ESI, and SBSR intentions. Our analyses indicate positive direct effects exist for both SBSR intentions and ESI on engagement in SBSR. We find that family involvement strengthens the relationship between ESI …

Financial Anxiety, Physiological Arousal, And Planning Intention, John Grable, Wookjae Heo, Abed Rabbani

Consumer Sciences Faculty Publications

Results from this exploratory clinical study indicate that financial anxiety—holding an unhealthy attitude about one’s financial situation—and physiological arousal—the physical precursor to behavior—play important roles in shaping consumer intention to engage in future financial planning activity. Findings suggest that those who are most likely to engage the services of a financial adviser exhibit low levels of financial anxiety and moderate to high levels of physiological arousal. The least likely to seek the help of a financial adviser are those who exhibit high financial anxiety and low physiological arousal. Results support findings documented in the literature that high anxiety levels often …

Heterogeneous Moral Views In The Stateless Society, Ryan Murphy Jan 2015

Heterogeneous Moral Views In The Stateless Society, Ryan Murphy

Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research

A growing literature has explored the workability and efficacy of governance without the state. The difficulties typically raised in the context of these studies concern under which conditions cooperation or Hobbesian chaos would arise in the absence of a monopolist of coercion. This paper challenges the idea of the stateless society from another vantage point, arguing the institutions articulated by proponents of the stateless society would struggle at reconciling heterogeneous views regarding the rights of third parties. This is relevant for many of the most contentious policy debates, such as abortion and animal rights.

Nontraditional Students In Management And Accounting Programs: Investigating The Relationship Between Personality And Major Satisfaction In The Community College Setting, Brad Ward Jan 2015

Nontraditional Students In Management And Accounting Programs: Investigating The Relationship Between Personality And Major Satisfaction In The Community College Setting, Brad Ward

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

High school students and working-age adults are frequently pressured by teachers, relatives, peers, employers, and state and federal governments to attend college for such reasons as obtaining new skills, increasing salary and prestige, and seeking new career opportunities (Baxter & Kavanagh, 2012; Calmes, 2014; Holcomb, 2008; Pringle, DuBose, & Yankey, 2010). Approximately 25% of these students drop out of school within the freshman year (ACT, 2013) due, in part, to a poor personality fit with their major (Jones & Jones, 2014). Consequently, attrition has become a costly problem for university administrators and taxpayers (American Institutes for Research, 2011). Personality is …

Price Cointegration And Leadership In Regional Tilapia And Roundscad Markets In The Philippines,1990-2007, Yolanda T. Garcia Jan 2015

Price Cointegration And Leadership In Regional Tilapia And Roundscad Markets In The Philippines,1990-2007, Yolanda T. Garcia

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

This study aims to investigate the price dynamics between the wholesale and retail prices of roundscad and tilapia in the regional markets of the Philippines. It also seeks to analyze how the observed dynamics in these prices could be linked to the development in market-related infrastructures that can promote trade, e.g., telecommunication and transportation facilities. Results of the study reveal that there is a general decrease in the number of regions that show cointegrated wholesale and retail prices over time in both fish species. Moreover, price leadership under the “Granger-causality” sense (of either wholesale or retail price) seems to diminish …

Out Of The Building, Into The Fire: An Analysis Of Cognitive Biases During Entrepreneurial Interviews, Tianxu Chen, Mark Simon, Ph.D., John Kim, Brian Poploskie Jan 2015

Out Of The Building, Into The Fire: An Analysis Of Cognitive Biases During Entrepreneurial Interviews, Tianxu Chen, Mark Simon, Ph.D., John Kim, Brian Poploskie

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

A major source of failure for new ventures is the entrepreneurs’ misunderstanding of the product-market fit. Recently, researchers have suggested that to get a better understanding of the product-market fit, entrepreneurs should “get out of the building” and interview many customers. This approach, while advantageous, is not without drawbacks. This article presents a conceptual model that incorporates the characteristics of “getting out of the building” to conduct customer interviews, and the biases that can arise to influence the entrepreneurs’ misjudgment of the product-market fit. We provide recommendations to overcome these biases.

Sabbath: The Theological Roots Of Sustainable Development, Michael E. Cafferky Jan 2015

Sabbath: The Theological Roots Of Sustainable Development, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

It is the thesis of this paper that, in general, the points of emphasis by the UN Commission on Sustainable Development are in close, but not perfect, alignment with the concept of Sabbath-shalom in Scripture. Some differences also exist. Sabbath begins at Creation and is the substance and symbol of God’s care for this earth. In Sabbath we rest in God’s sustaining power. Sabbath also is integral to covenant relationships. This means that Sabbath is not merely about care for the environment but also about care for all relationships envisioned by the concept of shalom. Both the creation roots and …
