Rutger Bregman's Centralized Utopia, Vladimir Snurenco
Rutger Bregman's Centralized Utopia, Vladimir Snurenco
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
A short, provocative review of Rutger Bregman’s Moral Ambition. I sketch his technocratic utopia—“Rutger-land”—a colder, centralized world where fossil fuels are banned, richer people are taxed into moral compliance, UBI prevails, and the landscape is “tobacco-free, malaria-free, poverty-free, and meat-free… just fields of kale and solar panels.” I argue Bregman’s approach is resolutely top-down—activism, lobbying, and policy over enterprise, churches, and grassroots civic life—misunderstanding how wealth is created and how real change happens. Against this centralized moralism, I make the case for decentralization, subsidiarity, and the quiet, dignified work of civil society.

Water From Stone: Extracting Leadership Wisdom From Moses' Mistake In Striking The Rock, Hershey H. Friedman, Joshua Krausz
Water From Stone: Extracting Leadership Wisdom From Moses' Mistake In Striking The Rock, Hershey H. Friedman, Joshua Krausz
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This paper explores the leadership lessons embedded in the story of Moses striking the rock rather than speaking to it. While seemingly a simple act of disobedience, it highlights the crucial need for leaders to adapt their approach based on the situation. Just as Moses faced a new generation with different needs, leaders today must understand the complex interplay of social and psychological factors within their teams. Proactive problem-solving, rather than reactive responses, is critical. Furthermore, fostering a collaborative environment where individuals work towards a shared purpose, independent of a single leader, is essential to avoid dependency and encourage healthy …
Emerging Paths Of Presencing Leadership: A Nature-Inspired Framework For Cultivating Presencing As A Way Of Being, Olen Gunnlaugson
Emerging Paths Of Presencing Leadership: A Nature-Inspired Framework For Cultivating Presencing As A Way Of Being, Olen Gunnlaugson
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This article reimagines leadership as an ecologically attuned practice of presencing, grounded in ethical responsiveness to nature’s underlying generative intelligence. It invites leaders to cultivate a nature-informed sensibility and imaginal attunement to emergence. Rooted in three naturesourced, orienting principles — the Rhizomic, Telluric, and Heliotropic — this framework integrates Dynamic Presencing’s (DP) foundational gestures of letting go, letting be, and letting come. These principles guide leaders through three interwoven narrative phases of leadership apprenticeship: Coming Home, Being Home, and Venturing Forth from Within. The Rhizomic principle invites a grounded, non-linear mode of leadership rooted in humility and openness, supporting leaders …

Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
This study primarily aims to explore the correlations between strategic planning practices and the achievement of sustainable development in Palestinian local authorities. To accomplish the study's objectives, a descriptive-correlational approach was employed to examine the relationship and impact between the study variables from the perspectives of members of strategic planning committees in the major governorates of the northern West Bank (Nablus, Tulkarm, Jenin, Tubas, Salfit, and Qalqilya). The study model was tested using a sample of 262 members, whose responses were collected through an electronic questionnaire. Non-probability (convenience) sampling was used for ease of data collection. The questionnaire served as …

A Study On Consumer-Avatar Interactions In The Metaverse: Implications For Marketing Strategies, Sunmin Kim, Ji Hyeon Heo, Ji Hee Song
Asia Marketing Journal
The metaverse, expected to grow into a trillion-dollar market by 2030, is driving global investments across technology, economy, and even education. This research examines the interactions between consumers and avatars, a core element of the metaverse, to understand their influence on consumer identity, behavior, and attitudes. Based on the self-extension and self-expansion theories, the study uses immersive netnography to investigate consumer-avatar dynamics on the ZEPETO platform. Findings indicate that avatars act as extensions of the self, where consumers express control, create, and seek knowledge. Additionally, interactions between avatars contribute to self-expansion, as consumers incorporate the resources, perspectives, and characteristics of …

Do Poverty Traps Exist In Uganda? Household Level Evidence From Panel Data, Alex Aliga, Susan Kavuma, Oryema John Bosco
Tanzanian Economic Review
This study aimed at providing new evidence on the existence of poverty trap among Uganda’s households using Uganda National Panel data. Evidence of the existence of a poverty trap is fundamental in guiding the development of sound policies and interventions targeted to assist in pulling households out of poverty trap. Analysis was based on two sets of panel data comprising 8,122 households from 3 waves (2009/2010-2011/2012) and 12,199 households from 4 waves (2013/2014-2019/2020). Using the PCA constructed asset index approach based on a parametric regression model, we show that a poverty trap exists. This is revealed by the negative quartic …

Understanding The Complementarity And Substitutability Of Cooking Fuels In Developing Countries: Evidence From 2020/21 Tanzania National Panel Survey, Samwel Saimon Lwiza, Monica Sebastian Kauky
Tanzanian Economic Review
Increasing access to alternative energy sources in developing countries might be a potential for multiple energy consumption rather than switching from traditional to modern ones. This study aims to examine the complementarity and substitutability of cooking fuels and factors influencing households’ choices of such fuels in developing countries. Two categories of cooking energy were considered: traditional (dirty) fuels - firewood, charcoal and kerosene; and modern (cleaner) fuels - Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and electricity. Based on a nationally representative sample of 5,199 households from the Tanzania National Panel Survey (NPS) of 2020/21, results from a Multivariate Probit model indicate that …
Risk-Sensitive Markov-Perfect Equilibrium, Matthew J. Sobel
Risk-Sensitive Markov-Perfect Equilibrium, Matthew J. Sobel
Faculty Scholarship
We investigate the existence and structure of Markov-perfect equilibria of discrete-time dynamic games in which players are risk averse and have time preferences consistent with discounting. We establish the existence of a Markov-perfect equilibrium when each player strives to maximize the expected exponential utility of the present value of the time stream of rewards. Also, we give sufficient conditions for a Markov-perfect equilibrium to be myopic, namely to be a sequence of Nash equilibria of static games. The myopia results are applied to a dynamic oligopoly model in which firms choose prices and production quantities, encounter stochastic demand and hold …

This article examines how the war-torn context in Iraq has affected men’s entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial masculinities. Drawing on the entrepreneurship masculinities literature, Connell’s notion of hegemonic masculinity and in-depth interviews with 21 Iraqi men entrepreneurs, this article demonstrates the complex interplay between entrepreneurship, masculinity and patriarchal dynamics in the context of wars and economic instability in Iraq. Study findings show how Iraqi men often turn to entrepreneurship out of necessity to meet patriarchal expectations of them as primary providers for their families. We contribute to the literature on entrepreneurship, men and masculinities by demonstrating how entrepreneurship not only serves as …

Dark Tourism And ‘Partial Religiosity’: Ontological-Aesthetic Pilgrimage In Camiguin Island, Philippines, Jan Gresil Kahambing
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This paper theorizes the contrast between dark tourism and what is referred to as ‘partial religiosity’ in the context of travel to selected tourist destinations on Camiguin Island, Philippines. Also called ‘thanatourism’, dark tourism is about visiting places that challenge the value derived from the association with death either from tragedies of naturally occurring catastrophes (such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or typhoons) or disasters produced by humans (such as genocides and violations of human rights). Focus is on three spots that sufficiently fit the description of dark tourist sites in Camiguin in the sense of naturally-caused disasters, namely: the Sunken …

Being the second largest belief, and fastest growing economy, many of the people from Muslim countries started travelling outside their countries due to increased economic prosperity and curiosity of exploring different cultures. The present study focuses on a non-Muslim country Taiwan, where the government is taking initiatives to attract the new segment of Muslim travellers. To support such initiatives, Halal-friendly-tourism is promoted in Taiwan. The pandemic period of 2019-2022 led to exploring different forms of tourism for reviving the ailing tourism sector, and cultural and heritage tourism is gaining prominence in this direction. Taiwan is trying to showcase its cultural …

Arts-Based Sustainability: From New York To Malawi, Martha B. Lerski
Publications and Research
Recognizing that libraries serve multiple constituencies and subject areas, this chapter documents and advocates for development of transdisciplinary arts-based research (ABR) and culture-related projects linked to environmental challenges. Libraries contribute collections and spaces, as well as the research of library and information scientists. Libraries are currently among invisible contributors to sustainability planning and services. The chapter will link this invisibility to the value of what visual arts refer to as negative space elements in subjects ranging from traditional ecological knowledge to environmental science. Library collections, projects, and research contribute to education for sustainable development (ESD) as required to achieve the …

When interacting with others in unfamiliar sociocultural settings, people need to learn the norms guiding appropriate behavior. The present research investigates an individual difference that helps this kind of learning: stress reactivity. Interactions in an unfamiliar sociocultural setting are stressful, particularly when the actor fails to follow its rules. Although stress is typically considered a liability, more stress-reactive individuals may be more motivated to improve, and, thus, quicker to learn these rules. Consistent with this idea, a pilot study found that people genetically inclined to stress reactivity, as computed by a genetic profile score across 59 single nucleotide polymorphisms on …

Bellyache, Valerie Braylovskiy
Canterbury Scholars
My manuscript of poems, called "Bellyache," speaks to my experience with endometriosis and how it intersects with both womanhood, and the pain we inherit from our ancestors that becomes stored in our bodies over time. This project gave me the permission to write poems that grapple with both escaping and recreating what it’s like to be a woman inside the medical system which continues to equate pain with hysteria, and inside a world that either says you’re sick, or you aren’t.

Beyond the Project Horizon: Journal of the Center for Project Management Innovation
The project investigated responses to an AI displaying emotional qualities, such as fear, through a mixed-methods approach. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two scenarios—one featuring an AI coworker and the other a human coworker and evaluated for emotional attachment and loss. Results revealed that professionals exhibited significant emotional responses to the potential "termination" of an AI team member. Qualitative analysis identified eight themes, including emotional responses and termination. Findings suggest that emotionally expressive AI activates psychological processes akin to human relationships, with implications for AI design, workplace dynamics, and ethical considerations surrounding AI termination.

Implicit Ethical Consumerism: Development And Cross-Cultural Validation Of A Novel Affect-Misattribution Measure, Brandon Reich, Hong Yuan, Lamberto Zollo, Riccardo Rialti
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
The literature has documented a pervasive attitude‐behavior gap in ethical consumption, whereby many consumers do not consistently translate their expressed positive attitudes toward ethical products into behavior. For marketers investing in social responsibility initiatives, this suggests that more accurate segmentation and demand forecasting may require an implicit measure of ethical consumerism. This study draws from literatures in ethical consumption and the psychology of attitudes to develop and validate such a measurement tool. Across three pretests and three studies, findings show that our implicit measure (based on the Affect Misattribution Procedure [AMP]) is cross‐culturally robust in predicting ethical consumption behavior beyond …
