Diversification Of Polish Agri-Food Trade, Małgorzata Bułkowska

A special attention was paid on changes in geographical structure and the level of diversification of Polish food exports as a result of the export restriction. Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the evolution of online sentiments toward a company (i.e. Chipotle) during a crisis, and the effects of corporate apology on those sentiments. Design/methodology/approach: Using a very large data set of tweets (i.e. over 2.6m) about Company A’s food poisoning case (2015–2016). This case was selected because it is widely known, drew attention from various stakeholders and had many dynamics (e.g. multiple outbreaks, and across different locations). This study employed a supervised machine learning approach. Its sentiment polarity classification and relevance classification consisted of five steps: sampling, labeling, tokenization, augmentation of semantic …

This paper reviews a variety of published sources by specialists in ancient history and philosophy written for students of philanthropy, nonprofit organizations, commons and other, related social sciences. It discusses Plato's Academy, Aristotle's Lyceum, and other philosophical schools as real historically significant organizations, not merely ideas or symbols. It was expanded from one section of Chapter 3 of the author's book, The Commons: New Perspectives on Nonprofit Organizations, Voluntary Action and Philanthropy (1992).

Revised Scientific Review: Minimum Age For Swim Lessons, Stephen J. Langendorfer Ph.D. Jan 2019

Revised Scientific Review: Minimum Age For Swim Lessons, Stephen J. Langendorfer Ph.D.

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The question addressed in the original scientific review (2009) was rephrased as Does sufficient scientific evidence exist to support setting a minimum age for swimming lessons? for this triennial review. Addressing the research question is significant because strong differences of opinion about the appropriate age(s) for initiating learn-to-swim lessons have existed among the pediatric medical profession, aquatic professionals and agencies, and proprietary programs and swim schools for over four decades. The question has implications for the appropriate purposes, pedagogies, and outcomes associated with swimming experiences for infants and young children that will be addressed in a subsequent review. The revised …

Project Insight: A Granular Approach To Enterprise Cybersecurity, Sunna Quazi, Adam Baca, Sam Darsche Jan 2019

Project Insight: A Granular Approach To Enterprise Cybersecurity, Sunna Quazi, Adam Baca, Sam Darsche

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we disambiguate risky activity corporate users are propagating with their software in real time by creating an enterprise security visualization solution for system administrators. The current problem in this domain is the lag in cyber intelligence that inhibits preventative security measure execution. This is partially due to the overemphasis of network activity, which is a nonfinite dataset and is difficult to comprehensively ingest with analytics. We address these concerns by elaborating on the beta of a software called "Insight" created by Felix Security. The overall solution leverages endpoint data along with preexisting whitelist/blacklist designations to unambiguously communicate …

Decasticization, Dignity, And ‘Dirty Work’ At The Intersections Of Caste, Memory, And Disaster, Ramaswami Mahalingam, Srinath Jagannathan, Patturaja Selvaraj

Management Faculty Publications

In this qualitative study we examine the role of caste, class, and Dalit janitorial labor in the aftermath of floods in Chennai, India, in 2015. Drawing from a variety of sources including interviews, social media, and news coverage, we studied how Dalit (formerly known as ‘untouchable’) janitors were treated during the performance of janitorial labor for cleaning the city. Our study focuses on two theoretical premises: (a) caste-based social relations reproduce inequalities by devaluing Dalit labor as ‘dirty work’; and (b) Dalit subjectivities, labor, and sufferings including occupational hazards become invisible and ungrievable forcing Dalits to provide a counter narrative …

Coral Reefs Of The Red Sea — Challenges And Potential Solutions, M Fine, Mine Cinar, C R. Voolstra, A Safa, B Rinkevich, D Laffoley, N Hilmi, D Allemand

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Red Sea is a unique body of water, hosting some of the most productive and diverse coral reefs. Human populations along coasts of the Red Sea were initially sparse due to the hot and arid climate surrounding it, but this is changing with improved desalination techniques, accessible energy, and increased economic interest in coastal areas. In addition to increasing pressure on reefs from coastal development, global drivers, primarily ocean acidification and seawater warming, are threatening coral reefs of the region. While reefs in southern sections of the Red Sea live near or above their maximum temperature tolerance and have …

Values-Based Leadership In A Time Of Values Confusion, Joseph P. Hester Jan 2019

Values-Based Leadership In A Time Of Values Confusion, Joseph P. Hester

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Values-based leadership is slipping, perhaps morphing into an ill-defined expediency without the weight or anchor of moral principles while neglecting common decency, genuine care for others, and a vision of democracy as a moral egalitarianism. Values, without a moral anchor, can easily slip into ethical relativity and narcissistic navel-gazing where a moral view of others hangs hopelessly by the threads of expedient decision making. This we see in the current political and business climate of 2018 as we live and work in an atmosphere of selfishness ignoring self-giving service to others. Will this last, or will we be able to …

What Went Wrong? Lessons In Leadership From Solomon, The Bible’S Wisest And Worst Ruler, Hershey H. Friedman, Linda W. Friedman Jan 2019

What Went Wrong? Lessons In Leadership From Solomon, The Bible’S Wisest And Worst Ruler, Hershey H. Friedman, Linda W. Friedman

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This paper attempts to demonstrate the many insights about successful and unsuccessful leadership that may be derived from the life of King Solomon, who, according to Scripture, was the wisest man who ever lived. Solomon may have been very wise but made some very serious blunders as a leader that led to the breakup of his empire after his son took over. This paper answers the obvious question as to which mistake/character flaw transformed Solomon from a great leader to an unsuccessful leader. This paper will also examine the Book of Proverbs attributed to Solomon and see what leadership lessons …
