Senior Theses

The aim of this thesis is to understand the global grocery market and to present a framework to assist sector players in developing go-to-market strategies as they expand abroad. In order to holistically study the cultural and economic implications of grocery stores across the world, we first selected six unique countries to focus our research: Singapore, Brazil, Chile, Australia, Germany, and the United States. In addition to having personally traveled to each of these countries, we chose to analyze these six very different markets in order to include a wide range of cultures and levels of economic development. We found …

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is a complex and revolutionary strategic management concept that aims at integrating organisational functions to present consumers with a single face of the organization. To this end, the presentation of this face of the company must be agreed upon by the multi-functional teams in the organization, especially regarding what the face of the organization is and/or how it should be presented. A number of critical success factors must apply if the implementation of CRM is to succeed. This study investigated the possibility of integrating the critical success factors (CSF) of customer relationship management (CRM), customer satisfaction …

Essays On Corporate Finance, Shuyu Xue Shuyu Apr 2020

Essays On Corporate Finance, Shuyu Xue Shuyu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation has two essays on corporate finance. In the first chapter, I investigate the dual-class structure. The dual-class structure is often regarded as poor corporate governance and the source of agency problems. However, I find that, for companies with high information asymmetry and long investment horizon, dual-class structure delivers higher operating performance and valuation ratios. These performing dual-class companies tend to have a higher investment in intangibles, more innovations, less pay-out, and less CEO compensation. The findings suggest that dual-class structure could be optimal in empowering information-advantageous inside shareholders and ensuring corporate long-term goals.

In the second chapter of …

The Effectiveness Of The Counter Marketing Strategy Of The Truth® Campaign, Maura Castronuovo

Senior Theses

The counter marketing strategy of the truth® campaign is unique. They use a voice that does not talk down to the teens in their target market; instead, they talk to teens in their own voice. Throughout this paper, I work to determine the effectiveness of the truth campaign’s counter marketing strategy. I do this through my own research, in which I utilize a survey and two focus groups, in addition to secondary research. As many of the studies I looked at were from the time of the launch of truth®, conducting my own research allowed me to gain a better …

Artificial Intelligence (Ai) Ethics: Ethics Of Ai And Ethical Ai, Keng Siau, Weiyu Wang Apr 2020

Artificial Intelligence (Ai) Ethics: Ethics Of Ai And Ethical Ai, Keng Siau, Weiyu Wang

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology has achieved many great things, such as facial recognition, medical diagnosis, and self-driving cars. AI promises enormous benefits for economic growth, social development, as well as human well-being and safety improvement. However, the low-level of explainability, data biases, data security, data privacy, and ethical problems of AI-based technology pose significant risks for users, developers, humanity, and societies. As AI advances, one critical issue is how to address the ethical and moral challenges associated with AI. Even though the concept of “machine ethics” was proposed around 2006, AI ethics is still in the infancy stage. AI ethics …

The Influence Of Mating Motives On Reliance On Form Versus Function In Product Choice, Seyed Hamid Abbassi Hosseini Apr 2020

The Influence Of Mating Motives On Reliance On Form Versus Function In Product Choice, Seyed Hamid Abbassi Hosseini

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Through five experiments, this research examined and supported the central hypothesis that a casual mating motive promotes higher reliance on form in product evaluation and choice, whereas a committed mating motive promotes higher reliance on function. Particularly, compared to a committed mating motive, a casual mating motive was associated with the relative preference for product options superior in form attributes as opposed to options superior in function attributes (Study 1, Study 2, and Study 4). This research applied three different operationalizations of mating motives. In studies 1 and 5, contextual priming was used. Studies 2 and 3 employed chronic mating …

Labor Unions And Equal Pay For Faculty: A Longitudinal Study Of Gender Pay Gaps In A Unionized Institutional Context, Rodrigo Dominguez-Villegas, Laurel Smith-Doerr, Henry Renski, Laras Sekarasih

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Previous single university studies of gender equity in faculty salaries conducted at both private and public universities in the U.S. have consistently found significant within-job gender gaps in pay. This study presents data from a less common labor context for faculty: a strongly unionized campus. Using data on all faculty at a large public university 2003-2015, three kinds of multivariate analyses are conducted: OLS multivariate regressions that include controls for race, field, and rank; Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition models to identify the explained and unexplained portions of the gender gap; and innovative longitudinal models for wage growth trajectories to examine the change …

Institutional Ownership And Value Relevance Of Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure: Empirical Evidence From China, Ramiz Ur Rehman, Zahid Riaz, Charles Cullinan, Junrui Zhang, Fanghua Wang

Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles

We examine the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure and firm value in China. Using a sample of listed companies on the Shanghai Stock Exchange from 2008 to 2012, we find that market value of a firm is higher when a company makes a lower level of CSR disclosure. Other things being equal, this relationship becomes positive when the CSR disclosure is moderated with the institutional ownership. With regard to the CSR disclosure, we found consistent results with respect to the little evidence that the amount of CSR disclosure is significantly associated with market value among those companies who …

JOHNSON CITY (March 6, 2020) – What did our ancient ancestors really look like?

Ever since the first skull of a Neanderthal was discovered over 150 years ago, anthropologists and artists have been working together to recreate the appearance and habits of our extinct relatives.  Paleoanthropological reconstruction is one of the most demanding and potentially contentious fields within paleoart, requiring painstaking attention to anatomical detail and an awareness of the social and cultural implications of portraying extinct hominins.

For over three decades, world-renowned paleoartist Mauricio Antón has worked with leading paleoanthropologists, sometimes creating the first reconstructions of specimens and even …

Rotary Oscillation Of A Rigid Sphere In A Couple Stress Fluid, Tarek Shehadeh, Emad Ashmawy Mar 2020

Rotary Oscillation Of A Rigid Sphere In A Couple Stress Fluid, Tarek Shehadeh, Emad Ashmawy

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

In this paper, the rotary oscillation of a rigid sphere in an incompressible couple stress fluid is studied. The classical no slip boundary conditions are imposed on spherical boundary. Moreover, it is assumed that the couple stresses on the boundary of the sphere vanish. In the present study, the motion is generated by a sudden rotary oscillation of the rigid sphere about an axe passing through its center with a time-dependent angular velocity. Stokasian assumption is taken into consideration so that the non-linear terms are neglected in the equation of motion. The torque experienced by the couple stress fluid on …

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. In this paper we introduce a mechanistic model through which exercise may enhance episodic memory, specifically via attenuating proactive and retroactive memory interference. We discuss the various types of memory, different stages of memory function, review the mechanisms behind forgetting, and the mechanistic role of exercise in facilitating pattern separation (to attenuate memory interference).
