Necessitation Through Growing Entanglements: Why We “Can’T Live Without” Some Products, Jakob Braun Aug 2021

Necessitation Through Growing Entanglements: Why We “Can’T Live Without” Some Products, Jakob Braun

Theses and Dissertations

Much research has been concerned with what constitute necessities and how they are related to pertinent concepts, such as needs, wants, desires, and luxuries (Belk, Ger, and Askegaard 2003; Duncan 2002; Fraser 1998, Hoyer and MacInnis 2004; Kerin, Hartley and Rudelius 2004; Sheth and Mittal 2004). Using thing-focused approaches, earlier studies are primarily concerned with classification schemes using dichotomies such as need-want and necessity-luxury. Studies that employ a human-focused perspective challenge these divisions and argue that necessities cannot be studied without considering the social and historical contexts (e.g., Buttle 1989; Firat 1987). Notwithstanding the important contributions that these studies have …

I Buy Less When Others Suggest: Impact Of Personal Relative Deprivation, Temporal Discounting, Social Norms And Store Reputation On Food Over-Acquisition, Swapnil Saravade Aug 2021

I Buy Less When Others Suggest: Impact Of Personal Relative Deprivation, Temporal Discounting, Social Norms And Store Reputation On Food Over-Acquisition, Swapnil Saravade

Theses and Dissertations

Food over-acquisition has shown to have detrimental consequences such as food over-consumption, food waste, obesity, and greenhouse effects. Extant literature has typically focused on food over-consumption, with little explanation of its precursor, food over-acquisition. The current thesis situates the research in grocery retail and examines why people over-acquire food. Further, which interventions can marketers develop to mitigate food over-acquisition and in which grocery stores would those be effective? The present dissertation approaches this issue by drawing concepts from two disciplines, sociology, and behavioral economics. Through five studies, the current thesis shows that when people feel relatively food-deprived, they tend to …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this paper is to implement the Current Expected Credit Losses (CECL) methodology for an Association of the Farm Credit System (FCS). CECL was released in 2016 by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and is expected to be implemented by all banks and lending institutions starting Jan. 1, 2023. CECL changes the way lenders account for Allowance for Loan and Lease Losses (ALLL) by allocating a small amount of allowance for loan loss for each loan at origination. The association for which this project was designed provided historical loan data for 21,755 loans which tracked probability of …

The Is Social Continuance Model: Using Conversational Agents To Support Co-Creation, Naif Alawi Jul 2021

The Is Social Continuance Model: Using Conversational Agents To Support Co-Creation, Naif Alawi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the rise of Agentic IS Artifact and the increasing integration of this technology within organizations, our understanding of the impact of this technology on individuals remains limited. Although IS use literature provides important guidance for organization to increase employees’ willingness to work with new technology implementations, the utilitarian view of prior IS use limits its application in light of the new evolving social interaction between humans and Agentic IS Artifacts. To that end, we contribute to the IS use literature by implementing a social view to understand the impact of Agentic IS Artifacts on an individual’s perception and behavior. …

Uk Consumers’ Preferences For Ethical Attributes Of Floating Rice: Implications For Environmentally Friendly Agriculture In Vietnam, Vo Hong Tu, Steven W. Kopp, Nguyen Thuy Trang, Andreas Kontoleon, Mitsuyasu Yabe

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Vietnam plays an important role in bearing global food security. However, Vietnamese rice farmers face several challenges, including pressures to develop sustainable livelihoods while reducing the environmental impacts of their production activities. Various Vietnamese agricultural restructuring policies were promulgated to promote the adoption of environmentally friendly practices to generate high value added for rice farmers, but the farmers are reluctant to adopt them because of perceived lack of demand. Decreasing consumption of rice in Asia and increasing demands in Europe shaped Vietnamese rice exporting policies. New trade agreements, such as the UK–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, offer new target markets for …

How Could Robots Improve The Customer Experience At A Theme Park, Ady Milman, Dr. Asli Tasci, Tingting Zhang

Rosen Research Review

Technology is moving fast, and accordingly, robots are being successfully integrated into several hospitality organizations to improve customer experiences. Theme parks could benefit from robots, to provide efficient and cost-effective services. Yet, there is a lack of research investigating customer perceptions of robots in theme parks. Dr. Ady Milman, Dr. Asli Tasci, and Dr. Tingting Zhang, from UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management, conducted the first investigation into how certain robotic qualities influence customer’s perceptions of and loyalty to the theme park. Their research could inform the future integration of robot technology into theme parks.

An Exploration Of The Theological Tensions In The Use Of Churches For Events, Ruth Dowson (Rev.) Jul 2021

An Exploration Of The Theological Tensions In The Use Of Churches For Events, Ruth Dowson (Rev.)

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The increasing prevalence of events within leisure and business activities (Dowson & Lamond, 2017), is reflected in the models of engagement by church organisations with their congregations and visitors. This increasing need for venues for events has brought about a new concept of ‘venuefication’ (Dowson & Lamond, 2017), which means that it is possible for any building, space or site to become a venue for an event. The growth of the experience economy in which consumers are moving from amassing possessions to acquiring experiences (Wood, 2009) influences a trend towards the Eventization of faith (Dowson 2018). For churches and other …

An Exploratory Study Of Mode Efficacy In Cybersecurity Training, Michael D. Workman Jul 2021

An Exploratory Study Of Mode Efficacy In Cybersecurity Training, Michael D. Workman

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Cybersecurity capabilities in organizations and governmental agencies continue to lag behind the threats. Given the current environment, these entities have placed renewed emphasis on cybersecurity education. However, education appears to lack its full potential in most settings. Few empirical studies have systematically tested the efficacy of various training methods and modes, and those that have been conducted have yielded inconsistent findings. Recent literature on the use of gamified simulations have suggested that they may improve cybersecurity behaviors. Similarly, live activities such as hackathons and capture the flag events have been surmised to augment learning and capabilities. We conducted an exploratory …

Memory, Imagination, Identity: Pilgrimage And Portraiture In Medieval And Early Modern Europe, Helena Guzik Jul 2021

Memory, Imagination, Identity: Pilgrimage And Portraiture In Medieval And Early Modern Europe, Helena Guzik

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Despite the wealth of material and textual evidence attesting to the practice of Christian pilgrimage throughout history, comprehending an individual’s understanding of pilgrimage in relation to his or her own identity has always proved challenging. Pilgrimage studies scholars have tended to look to travel accounts, chronicles, and collected pilgrim souvenirs to discern how pilgrims were affected by and responded to their experiences. One form of source material that has gone largely underexamined in this regard is the genre of portraiture. This article explores how and why the concept of pilgrimage could be incorporated into the self-fashioned images of patrons in …

Pilgrimage To A Greek Island Shrine, Evy Johanne Håland Jul 2021

Pilgrimage To A Greek Island Shrine, Evy Johanne Håland

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

In modern Greece, the festival dedicated to the ‘Dormition’ of the Panagia (‘the All-Holy One’), who is the Virgin Mary, is celebrated on 15 August. On Tinos, in the island group of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, this fertility- and healing-festival dedicated to the Dormition of the Panagia is particularly important due to several reasons. The Church of the Panagia, Euangelistria (‘the Annunciation’), owes its fame to a miraculous holy icon (image) of the Annunciation, which was unearthed in a field in 1823. Since then, the miracles worked by this icon have made Tinos a centre of Pan-Orthodox worship, …

Keynes And Knight On Uncertainty: Peas In A Pod Or Chalk And Cheese?, Mark D. Packard, Per L. Bylund, Brent B. Clark

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

For many years, the ideas of Knight and Keynes have been widely understood to overlap greatly and they are presumed to have developed notions of uncertainty that deeply intersect, both describing a state where outcomes have non-probabilistic likelihoods. Furthermore, even their political philosophies are historically somewhat homogenised, both considered ‘liberals’. We critically review the historical records and writings of these key scholars with the purpose of dehomogenising their political philosophies, scientific epistemologies and their famous works on uncertainty, published in the same year—1921. We show that neither Keynes nor Knight has been considered fairly by history. Keynes, far from a …

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

The paper examined the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on the Philippines’ MSMEs across the food value chain and the strategies that food-based MSMEs employed to cope with disruptions. A food value chain framework was used to
analyze the food-based MSMEs, focusing on the input and service provision, production/farming, processing, transport and storage, retailing, and consumption. Results revealed the following: (1) different quarantine protocols across provincial and local boundaries contributed to the complexity of transporting inputs and products; (2) limited mobility of manpower contributed to the challenges of continuing business operations; (3) there was an observed increase in new financing programs …

An Assessment Of Swine Industry In The Philippines, Christian Paul L. Fang, Cenon D. Elca

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

This paper assessed the performance of swine industry in the Philippines by synthesizing secondary data from 1990 to 2020. Inefficiencies in major swine value chain segments were identified. The factors affecting swine production and pork consumption were determined using multiple regression analysis. The bottlenecks found along the chain are yellow corn supply deficit, fragmented structures of yellow corn and backyard farms, high disease susceptibility of backyard farms, and compromised meat quality produced from private slaughterhouses. The own price, inventory, and slaughtered animals have significant direct effects on swine production. The retail price of pork and income have significant direct influences …

The importance of rice consumption and the high level of food insecurity in Bangladesh highlights the importance of having markets that efficiently price rice according to consumer preferences. This study aims to assess how effectively rice prices in Bangladesh are reflective of rice quality. More specifically, we estimate how the rice market is currently pricing selected rice quality attributes, such as broken percentage, chalk percentage, kernel size and …

Investigating The Influence Of Consumption Values On Healthy Eating Choices: The Moderating Role Of Healthy Food Awareness, Aleem Raza, Mubasher Akram, Muhammad Asif

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The purpose of the study was to empirically investigate the extent to which consumption values influence consumers’ healthy eating choices. By using the theory of consumption values, the study also attempts to explain the role of healthy food awareness as a moderating variable in consumers’ healthy eating choices. The quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaire from 320 participants. The data were analyzed by using structured equation modeling. The results revealed that consumers’ healthy eating choices are strongly linked to emotional and epistemic values. The study also found a positive relationship between conditional value and consumers’ healthy eating choices. In …

Bitcoin, Intrinsic Value, And Herd Effect, Angel Enrique Chico-Frias Jul 2021

Bitcoin, Intrinsic Value, And Herd Effect, Angel Enrique Chico-Frias

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The intrinsic value of a good may be related to its production costs, so its price will never be less than this. Bitcoin prices can have behaviors similar to those existing in nature. The research aims to find similar behaviors between herds in the animal world and Bitcoin prices. Besides, the study analyzes the cost of production to determine if it is the intrinsic value of this cryptocurrency. Three scenarios in Bitcoin prices in the Momentum indicator were studied. The ANOVA and Tuckey test were helpful to find if the Momentum averages are related. The Momentum Index data worked with …

Terrorist Attacks, Managerial Sentiment, And Corporate Disclosures, Wen Chen, Haibin Wu, Liandong Zhang Jul 2021

Terrorist Attacks, Managerial Sentiment, And Corporate Disclosures, Wen Chen, Haibin Wu, Liandong Zhang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study investigates the effect of managerial sentiment on corporate disclosure decisions. Using terrorist attacks in the United States as adverse shocks to managerial sentiment, we find that firms located in the metropolitan areas attacked issue more negatively biased earnings forecasts. The effect is stronger for firms with higher operating uncertainty and firms with younger, inexperienced, or less confident executives and it is weaker for firms located in states with increasing violent crime rates. A potential alternative explanation is that managers could strategically bias earnings forecasts downward and attribute the poor performance to terrorist attacks. To address this issue, we …

Communicating With Muted Groups: The Case Of Human Trafficking, Amy Matzke-Fawcett

Communication & Theatre Arts Theses

The problem of human trafficking is global, affecting men and women, adults, and children, with exploitation of various forms including (but not limited to) sex work, hospitality and entertainment, labor, agriculture, soldiering, forced begging and organ removal. While it has been the focus of movies, news articles, documentaries, legislation and research, the discussion of the communication surrounding human trafficking is still in the formative stages. What is the messaging about human trafficking in legislation, both historically and in the present day, and how did news and popular media help to frame the discourse around trafficking in the United States? Using …
