Knowledge Exchange And Combination: The Role Of Human Resource Practices In The Performance Of High-Technology Firms, Christopher J. Collins, Ken G. Smith Dec 2005

Knowledge Exchange And Combination: The Role Of Human Resource Practices In The Performance Of High-Technology Firms, Christopher J. Collins, Ken G. Smith

Christopher J Collins

[Excerpt] In this study, we developed and tested a theory of how human resource practices affect the organizational social climate conditions that facilitate knowledge exchange and combination and resultant firm performance. A field study of 136 technology companies showed that commitment-based human resource practices were positively related to the organizational social climates of trust, cooperation, and shared codes and language. In turn, these measures of a firm's social climate were related to the firm's capability to exchange and combine knowledge, a relationship that predicted firm revenue from new products and services and firm sales growth.

Or/Ms Research In Disaster Operations Management, Nezih Altay, Walter G. Green Dec 2005

Or/Ms Research In Disaster Operations Management, Nezih Altay, Walter G. Green

Nezih Altay

Disasters are large intractable problems that test the ability of communities and nations to effectively protect their populations and infrastructure, to reduce both human and property loss, and to rapidly recover. The seeming randomness of impacts and problems and uniqueness of incidents demand dynamic, real-time, effective and cost efficient solutions, thus making the topic very suitable for OR/MS research. While social sciences and humanities literatures enjoy an abundance of articles on disaster management, the OR/MS community is yet to produce a critical mass. In this paper, we survey the literature to identify potential research directions in disaster operations, discuss relevant …

Economics Of Information Security Investment In The Case Of Simultaneous Attacks, C. Derrick Huang, Qing Hu, Ravi S. Behara Dec 2005

Economics Of Information Security Investment In The Case Of Simultaneous Attacks, C. Derrick Huang, Qing Hu, Ravi S. Behara

Qing Hu

With billions of dollars being spent on information security related products and services each year, the economics of information security investment has become an important area of research, with significant implications for management practices. Drawing on recent studies that examine optimal security investment levels under various attack scenarios, we propose an economic model that considers simultaneous attacks from multiple external agents with distinct characteristics, and derive optimal investments based on the principle of benefit maximization. The relationships among the major variables, such as systems vulnerability, security breach probability, potential loss of security breach, and security investment levels, are investigated via …

Improving Disaster Response Efforts With Decision Support Systems, Steven Thompson, Nezih Altay, Walter G. Green Iii, Joanne Lapetina Dec 2005

Improving Disaster Response Efforts With Decision Support Systems, Steven Thompson, Nezih Altay, Walter G. Green Iii, Joanne Lapetina

Nezih Altay

As evidenced by Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005, disaster response efforts are hindered by a lack of coordination, poor information flows, and the inability of disaster response managers to validate and process relevant information and make decisions in a timely fashion. A number of factors contribute to current lacklustre response efforts. Some are inherent to the complex, rapidly changing decision-making environments that characterise most disaster response settings. Others reflect systematic flaws in how decisions are made within the organisational hierarchies of the many agencies involved in a disaster response. Slow, ineffective strategies for gathering, processing, and analysing data can also …

Towards New Web Services Based Supervisory Systems Dedicated To Nomadic Operators, Djilali Idoughi, Christophe Kolski

Professor Djilali IDOUGHI

This paper outlines new approaches and motivations about supervisory HMI, such as mobility and information access by different human actors belonging to the organization, by using diverse interaction devices, exploiting Web Services and their underlying technologies. The basic concepts are explained in the context of industrial supervision adopting a service oriented architecture (SOA) design approach which makes it possible to integrate real time information from different systems more easily than traditional ones. A representative supervisory scenario which illustrates the approach is described and discussed.

A Dark Tourism Spectrum: Towards A Typology Of Death And Macabre Related Tourist Sites, Attractions And Exhibitions, Philip Stone Dr Dec 2005

A Dark Tourism Spectrum: Towards A Typology Of Death And Macabre Related Tourist Sites, Attractions And Exhibitions, Philip Stone Dr

Dr Philip Stone

Deaths, disasters and atrocities in touristic form are becoming an increasingly pervasive feature within the contemporary tourism landscape, and as such, are ever more providing potential spiritual journeys for the tourist who wishes to gaze upon real and recreated death. As a result, the rather emotive label of 'dark tourism' has entered academic discourse and media parlance, and consequently has generated a significant amount of research interest. However, despite this increasing attention the dark tourism literature remains both eclectic and theoretically fragile. That is, a number of fundamental issues remain, not least whether it is actually possible or justifiable to …

Channeling Buzz Or Bucks? Ethical Implications For Marketing, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Vahn Knight Dec 2005

Channeling Buzz Or Bucks? Ethical Implications For Marketing, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Vahn Knight

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

Too often higher education officials equate successful enrollment management with determining the appropriate financial-aid package, assuming the student matriculates. However, there are competing theories as to why a student may be attracted to a particular college. Could it be the "buzz"? This study examines the relationship between buzz and bucks with respect to enrollment objectives. Research findings indicate that it is not an either-or proposition. Moreover, marketers are presented with an ethical responsibility to safeguard the public.

East Meets West, Or Vice-Versa: Exploring A Hybrid Pedagogical Approach To Global Instruction, Ronald Paugh, Oscar Mcknight, Jun Gong

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

In an increasing multicultural classroom a Confucian-Socratic framework is used to highlight fundamental differences in learning approaches between Eastern and Western cultures. However, educators must also be aware of inherent similarities if best practices are to be gleaned and implemented with ingenuity in the classroom. Therefore, innovations and insights into the qualitative-quantitative continum of contemporary research are offered as an analogue to help build a hybrid model of global instruction. A new Mobius Model of Global Instruction is introduced that emphasizes a multicultural perspective

“El Derecho Alimentario De La Unión Europea: La Aplicación Del Principio De Precaución”, Luis González Vaqué

Luis González Vaqué

The precautionary principle enables rapid response in the face of a possible danger to human, animal or plant health, or to protect the environment. In particular, where scientific data do not permit a complete evaluation of the risk, recourse to this principle may, for example, be used to stop distribution or order withdrawal from the market of products likely to be hazardous.

El principio de precaución permite reaccionar rápidamente ante un posible peligro para la salud humana, animal o vegetal, o para proteger el medio ambiente. De hecho, en caso de que los datos científicos no permitan una determinación completa …
