A Mathematical Remodeling For Crop Portfolio Selection Under Limited Irrigation Resource, Li Zhang
A Mathematical Remodeling For Crop Portfolio Selection Under Limited Irrigation Resource, Li Zhang
S.C. Water Resources Conference
A mathematical model and optimization framework to aid farmers in selecting crop portfolios were proposed and discussed in (Bokhira et al. 2014; Chrispell et al. 2012). In this paper, we propose a refined mathematical model which reduces the number of constraints by nearly half while the number of decision variables is about the same. Also, the proposed model is easier to implement and maintain due to its generalized structure, and it provides more flexibility for us to expand the problem. Some key sensitive analysis is also provided.

Presently, EAS is progressing with Build Team 60% complete and …
Library Marketing: From Passion To Practice, Jill S. Heinze
Library Marketing: From Passion To Practice, Jill S. Heinze
Charleston Library Conference
As discussed in the Charleston Briefing entitled Library Marketing: From Passion to Practice, successfully marketing libraries requires more than a sound communication strategy. Marketing is, in fact, all of an organization’s activities that deliver a product or service to its intended customers. This distinction means that library organizations need to expand their views about what it means to “market” themselves to encompass all of the touchpoints users have with their services. In the process, librarians are challenged to reconcile marketing practices from the business world with their public service ethos, as well as ensure their missions are well defined and …
Professional Development In Libraries: One Size Does Not Fit All, Patricia D. Sobczak, Kathy Bradshaw
Professional Development In Libraries: One Size Does Not Fit All, Patricia D. Sobczak, Kathy Bradshaw
Charleston Library Conference
With the constantly changing landscape in 21st-century libraries, it would seem that professional development would be more important than ever. However, research indicates that few libraries have formal professional development programs, and there are mixed messages from library leaders regarding the necessity and importance of professional development. It is no secret that libraries always seem to be facing budget cuts, and funding for professional development is often seen as a low priority. We were curious to understand how professional development is viewed and executed in other academic libraries.
Professional development means different things to different people. To some, professional development …

Critical Business Collections: Examining Key Issues Using A Social Justice Lens, Heather A. Howard, Katharine V. Macy, Corey Seeman, Alyson S. Vaaler

Academic librarians perform a balancing act between the needs of patrons, licensing restrictions, and the missions of our libraries. As part of the work to develop our campus collections, academic business librarians work with both schools and commercial vendors to provide resources that our business students and faculty require. Business publishers charge academic customers pennies on the dollar for access, but are likely to seek protections for their intellectual content by placing usage restrictions that run counter to what librarians would prefer. This can cause difficulties for librarians in serving their unique populations. This also can run counter to the …

Charleston Library Conference
Collections are undergoing intense change and pressure from technology, budgetary uncertainties, and emerging perspectives on future approaches. Our case study—drawn from our experiences as collections librarians—examines these complex issues facing academic collections, large or small, across the profession. Through the development of “collections of distinction” within the local collection, collaborations and scholarly partnerships with colleagues and faculty, and advocacy for the importance of dedicated oversight to ensure that collections investments fulfill the academic mission, we explore possible solutions to the complicated issues defining contemporary collections practices.

Statistical Analysis, Data Visualization, And Business Intelligence Tools For Electronic Resources In Academic Libraries, Cheng Cheng, Tracy J. Gilmore, Colleen Lougen, Connie Stovall
Charleston Library Conference
Analytics, business intelligence, and data visualization have an increasingly important space in the changing assessment landscape of academic libraries. Today, most academic libraries are spending a significant amount of their total expenditure budget on electronic resources. While they are high-value assets for modern libraries, the expensive annual subscription cost and continuing price increases of e-resources also make them a substantial budgeting burden. It is therefore essential to have a clear statistical view of the trends and patterns in price changes for e-resources and vendors. This paper focuses on three major topics vital for developing such a view: first, the e-resources …

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
Over the last several decades, the notion of traditional aircraft design has significantly changed. While there are many modern aircraft that resemble earlier models, their components, systems, and overall architecture have evolved, including the introduction of small unmanned aircraft systems. Despite the growing consumer attraction to own and operate these aircraft, the subsequent impact on safety is an area of intense concern. The requirement of an established maintenance program for manned aircraft is rooted in ensuring that all aircraft are deemed safe for flight. Preventive maintenance schedules are based on component reliability data, which minimizes unnecessary maintenance while preventing maintenance-related …

Pipeline Or Waterslide: Advancing Women Into Executive Positions In Business And Financial Planning, Shannon Maura Domski
Celebration of Learning
We seek to understand the continued lack of females in upper management or “C-Suite” positions in business and more specifically looking at the continued lack of female planners in the financial planning industry. We hypothesis that although great strides are being made to foster inclusion these changes are stalled not only by unconscious prejudices against women, but also by a lack of confidence by women themselves. By conducting interviews with over a dozen women in a variety of executive and planning positions we attempted to bring a consensus of some of the root causes of this imbalance as well as …

ICOT 18 - International Conference on Thinking - Cultivating Mindsets for Global Citizens
With the advent of the 21st Century, scholars, politicians, scientists, educators, entrepreneurs, religious leaders, and parents have looked at the increasing rapidity of change and complexity in the world, and wondered what capabilities are necessary to embrace the challenges facing us. The P21 Partnership cites four basic “C” skills: creativity and innovation; critical thinking and problem-solving; communication; and, collaboration. However, developing the “4 Cs” relies on another attribute – curiosity, the hallmark of which is the ability to formulate good questions. This workshop proposes to engage participants in a lively exercise of asking questions. A brief introduction reviews various …

The Pricing Impact Of The Decreasing Competitiveness Of The Health Insurance Market, Lauren N. Patterson
EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
The Affordable Care Act created the national insurance exchanges of qualified health plans to encourage a higher insured rate, larger risk pools, and lower prices for quality health coverage. Consolidation of insurers can have opposing effects. The insurers’ risk pools will grow, allowing insurers to better hedge for risk. However, consolidation decreases the prevalence of competition in the market, and past research shows that insurer consolidation decreases market competition and increases prices.
I examine how the number of plans offered in a set market, pricing components, and county health variables impact the monthly premium pricing of plans sold on the …

This study examined 21st-century American churches and the pastors who lead them to determine whether those pastors who attended seminaries, traditional universities, or denominational institutions were more academically prepared to grow church membership, increase weekly attendance, retain members, manage high-impact leadership teams, and engage in local church formation than were pastors who did not attend or complete any academic institution. The researcher examined the academic completion levels, leadership and church growth characteristics, and professional training of the participating pastors from six broadly defined categories: (a) pastors who participated in the 2014-2015 Outreach/LifeWay magazine survey; (b) pastors who participated in …
A Descriptive Study Investigating Accounting Students' Job Selection Preferences, Richard Wesley
A Descriptive Study Investigating Accounting Students' Job Selection Preferences, Richard Wesley
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Many accounting students are selecting accounting audit firms without exhausting a thorough research about the firms or getting an idea of the firms’ expectation. Moreover, accounting firms are hiring students without getting a clear understanding of the students’ job selection preference. As a result, both the students and employers are finding a cultural mismatch. Often employers and students have different perspectives about the nature of the professional skills that are required for a successful accounting career. Once hired, many students soon leave because they become disillusioned with job-related realities. The value of this research adds to the body of research …

Student Symposium
Background Information:
- In this digital age, technology is being integrated into every aspect of human life. My goal was to learn more about the various ways that technological advancements have changed, and will continue to change, the way people shop for clothing. I chose to research the technological integration from the perspective of an original brick-and-mortar establishment (Nordstrom) as well as the perspective of an online retailer (Amazon Fashion). Studying Nordstrom’s strategies provided me with information on how physical stores are utilizing technological advancements to provide their customer with the best, most modern service that a brick-and-mortar can offer. …

The Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) is a tool created by Sandra Bem in the 1970’s aimed at measuring individual’s androgyny. Critiques concerning the theoretical and methodological framework suggest that it may be in need of an update. The purpose of my research was to determine if and what adjustments were needed for the BSRI. An adjusted version of the short form of the BSRI was distributed to undergraduate students on a small Christian university campus in the Midwest. Respondents rated traits from the BSRI in regards to social desirability, personal desirability, and gendered connotation. The results exhibited that three traits, …

Saving Olivet Money With Creation Care, Nicholas Boros
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Universities throughout the United States are searching for ways to reduce overhead costs, to help combat rises in tuition costs. Typically, one would think that installing solar panels on campus to help generate electricity would cost Olivet money, especially since the University is located in the Midwest. While such an undertaking would require an upfront investment, we will discuss how solar panels could save the University as much as $500,000 to $800,000 per year after an approximate 10 year break even point. We will also briefly discuss how similar approaches could be applied to other businesses and homes for a …
