Development Of Problem-Based Learning Worksheet Toenhance Ecoliteracy: Human Impact On Ecosystem, Ulina M.S. Simangunsong, B. Manurung, Martina Asiati Napitupulu
Jurnal Pendidikan Sains
Ecoliteracy (ecological literacy) is an individual's ability to understand basic ecological principles and make environmentally responsible decisions. Improving ecoliteracy is a crucial foundation for realizing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which prepares students to become proactive citizens in protecting the environment. The problem-based learning model helps students learn on their own by using real-world environmental cases to get them to think critically and solve problems. Therefore, this research aims to determine the effectiveness of using problem-based learning worksheets to enhance the ecoliteracy of seventh-grade students. The development model used is 4-D. The research instruments include expert validation forms for subject, …

Development Of E-Lkpd Assisted By Phet Colorado Basedon Discovery Learning: Critical Thinking Skills On Lightmaterial At Junior High School, Flora Yani Saragih, Pintor Simamora
Jurnal Pendidikan Sains
Critical thinking is necessary for 21st-century pupils, but PISA data suggest that Indonesian students, especially junior high school students, lack it. The junior high science/physics light material is abstract and involves in-depth reasoning (reflection, refraction, and shadow generation). Without critical thinking, kids memorize formulas or notions without analyzing real phenomena. Discovery learning involves pupils discovering concepts via observation and experimentation. Critical thinking requires initiative, exploration, and reasoning, which these foster. Therefore, this study aims to develop E-LKPD based on Discovery Learning assisted by an interactive simulation of PhET Colorado to strengthen the critical thinking skills of grade VIII students on …

Guided Inquiry Learning Assisted By Crossword Puzzlemedia: Student Scientific Literacy And Critical Thinkingability For Middle School, Agis Putri Niswa, Mariati Purnama Simanjuntak, Ramlan Silaban, Fauziyah Harahap, Ridwan Abdullah Sani
Jurnal Pendidikan Sains
Scientific literacy and critical thinking skills are two fundamental competencies that students need in the 21st century. Scientific literacy is essential for students to understand and use scientific knowledge to make informed decisions, while critical thinking trains students to analyze information, evaluate arguments, and solve problems logically. Therefore, the intent of this study was to determine the effect of the guided inquiry learning model assisted by crossword puzzle media on students’ scientific literacy and critical thinking skills. The type of research used was quasi-experimental with a two-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of two classes: class VII-8 as the control …

Mechanisms Of Antibody-Mediated Protection In Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection, Samantha Mackin
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Mechanisms of Antibody-Mediated Protection in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection by Samantha Rae Mackin Doctor of Philosophy in Biology and Biomedical Sciences Immunology Washington University in St. Louis, 2025 Professor Michael S. Diamond, Chair Coronaviruses (CoVs) are enveloped, non-segmented, positive-sense RNA viruses belonging to the Coronaviridae family. The subfamily Coronavirinae includes four genera: alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and deltacoronaviruses. While gamma- and deltacoronaviruses primarily circulate in wild or domestic birds and have shown the potential for cross-species transmission, alpha- and betacoronaviruses mainly infect mammals, resulting in respiratory illnesses that can be mild or severe. Over …

With mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), hereafter, deer, populations in decline, wildlife managers have increased their efforts to improve factors that limit population growth. In the State of Utah (hereafter, Utah), these efforts have included habitat restoration which is expected to improve environmental conditions for deer. Some of these efforts include pinon-juniper removal, prescribed burning, and spraying of invasive plant species. Although previous work has demonstrated the local impacts of restoration on deer populations, it is unknown how the environmental conditions in the landscape surrounding restoration treatments may modify local restoration impacts. Identifying how both local and landscape-scale conditions influence deer …

Adaptation Of Exome Sequencing Methods For Low-Quality Genomic Dna Extracted From Aged Fta Micro-Cards In Sudden Death Investigations, Gerges Samir Nazir
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
DNA degradaon and insufficient gDNA quanty and purity, preserving genomic DNA on FTA Micro-Cards presents substanal difficules for forensic invesgaons of unexpected fatalies. Through the use of lowquality genomic DNA recovered from four-year-old dried blood using FTA Micro-Cards, this effort seeks to enhance and opmize exome sequencing. Samples were sequenced using Next-Generaon Sequencing (NGS) with Illumina DNA Prep with Exome 2.0 Plus Enrichment with mitochondrial panel, starng at 0.1 ng/μl of gDNA.To improve the coverage of mitochondrial genes, a mitochondrial DNA spike-in was included, and the samples were sequenced using the NextSeq 1000/2000 plaorm, employing the onboard DRAGEN Enrichment Pipeline …

Artificial Light At Night Can Worsen Competitive Outcomes Between Native And Invasive Grasses, Shannon M. Murphy, Kylee Grenis, Anna A. Sher
Artificial Light At Night Can Worsen Competitive Outcomes Between Native And Invasive Grasses, Shannon M. Murphy, Kylee Grenis, Anna A. Sher
Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
Artificial light at night (ALAN) is an important global disturbance that affects community dynamics, but how it affects species interactions, such as competition, is not well understood and needs investigation. In plant communities, some exotic-invasive plant species seem to be facilitated by ALAN, which may alter competitive outcomes with native plant communities and promote invasion. Despite these intriguing results, whether ALAN affects competitive outcomes between native and invasive species is understudied. Here we tested how ALAN affects competitive outcomes between two native prairie grasses and two grasses that are exotic-invasive in North America. We planted each native species with a …
Improving Coral Restoration Outcomes Through Novel Molecular Applications, Matthew H. Gamache
Improving Coral Restoration Outcomes Through Novel Molecular Applications, Matthew H. Gamache
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coral reef ecosystems are declining globally from numerous stressors, including localized pollution, disease, and marine heatwaves induced by climate change. To preserve these ecosystems, it is critical to identify corals that can withstand stressors—primarily future marine heatwaves—and prioritize them for coral restoration efforts until these stressors are mitigated. Coral responses to thermal stress can be influenced by several partners, including mutualistic microalgae and a vast prokaryotic community. Here, I use advanced molecular techniques to examine which partners (coral host, algal symbiont, and microbial communities) are associated with coral health, how they contribute to holobiont physiology, and their potential to increase …
