Nuclear And Cell Division In The Root Tip Of Iris Versicolor, Mary Maxentia Mahoney May 1934

Nuclear And Cell Division In The Root Tip Of Iris Versicolor, Mary Maxentia Mahoney

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer found that very little work has been done on the somatic mitosis of Iris versicolor L. Some interesting accounts of karyokinesis in the root tips of some monocots have been written. Schaffner (1898) made a detailed study of nuclear and cell division in the root tips of the Allium cepa. He observed that the spindle originated from centrospheres, and that the most typical resting nuclei occured some distance back of the tip beyond the actively dividing region. In good stained material the resting nuclei had one or two large nucleoli and a very distinct chromatin net …

Observations On The Gross Anatomy Of The Venous System Of Adult Chelonia, James S. Kain May 1934

Observations On The Gross Anatomy Of The Venous System Of Adult Chelonia, James S. Kain

Bachelors’ Theses

The turtle is a reptile belonging to the order Chelonia. Because it is so very abundant and its size so convenient it has been much used for class work and to a certain extent has been studied rather thoroughly by private workers. Each one, however, stressing his or her own particular point of interest especially, the turtle is attractive to students of Comparative Anatomy because of the fact that it has retained more of the primitive characteristics of the ancestral form from which the mammals are descended than any other readily available reptile.

Studies On The Anatomy Of The Arterial System Of The Turtle, Sylvester J. Schroeder May 1934

Studies On The Anatomy Of The Arterial System Of The Turtle, Sylvester J. Schroeder

Bachelors’ Theses

Turtles are reptiles in which the body is wide and short, and is enclosed in a shell composed of a dorsal shield, the carapace, and a ventral shield the plastron. The shell of three of the species is composed of large external, epidermal, horny plates. These latter consist, in the carapace, of the flattened ribs and the flattened trunk vertebrae which coalesce with overlying dermal bony plates, and are surrounded on the circumference of the shell by a series of marginal dermal bony plates; in the plastron they consist of exclusively dermal plates, there being no sternum. The carapace and …

Contributions To The Anatomy And Physiology Of The Heart In The Turtle, David J. Twohig Apr 1934

Contributions To The Anatomy And Physiology Of The Heart In The Turtle, David J. Twohig

Bachelors’ Theses

The heart in any animal, and especially in higher animals, is an important organ. It is the purpose of this paper to consider such an organ from the anatomical and physiological basis as it exists in the turtle.

The turtle was chosen as the subject for many reasons. The first one of these reasons was because the heart of the turtle closely.resembles the most complex of hearts in structure and action. The second was because the heart is quite typical of the members of Class Reptilia. The third reason was because the speciments are readily obtainable.

Contributions To The Anatomy Of The Aortic Arches Of The Acanthias Vulgaris, Wendell Corwin Apr 1934

Contributions To The Anatomy Of The Aortic Arches Of The Acanthias Vulgaris, Wendell Corwin

Bachelors’ Theses

The spiny dogfish is a small shark that averages about two feet in length and three pounds in weight. It is called spiny because of the presence of a prominent spine on the boarder of each dorsal fin. The species has a wide distribution in the North Atlantic, occurring plentifully on the American and European shores, as well as in the Mediterranean Sea. The fish swim in enormous schools and are constantly in motion. The dogfish has no economic importance but is universally used for dissection in the zoological laboratory.

An Analysis Of The Habitat Distribution Of The Vertebrate Fauna Of A Stream- Bank Association In Western Kansas, Olive Falls Sep 1933

An Analysis Of The Habitat Distribution Of The Vertebrate Fauna Of A Stream- Bank Association In Western Kansas, Olive Falls

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This present paper is chiefly concerned with the distribution of animals. The environmental and faunal conditions of Western Kansas have not been studied, and they are rapidly changing, due to human occupancy of the region. Therefore, a major object of this report is to put on record information in regard to the present vertebrate animal life in Western Kansas. Profound changes in the native conditions have already been recognized; for example, many animals have become extinct, and others are gradually vanishing. It is in the hope of contributing something of the facts of the status of the species in this …

Fishes Of The Mammoth Cave Region, John Sterling Jackson Aug 1933

Fishes Of The Mammoth Cave Region, John Sterling Jackson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Extensive surveys of the ichthyological fauna have been made for states bordering Kentucky. An investigation of the literature pertaining to the ichthyology of Kentucky discloses the fact that no detailed investigation has been made of fish life in this state, especially western Kentucky. No record is available of any survey having been made in the section known as the Mammoth Cave Region.

The purpose of this survey was to make a species and ecological study of the fishes of the Mammoth Cave Region. Extensive opportunity for ecological studies exists in this region, but only the most important factors were included …

A Study Of The Tolerance Of Certain Species Of Fishes For Low Dissolved Oxygen & Increased Carbon Dioxide Concentrations, Charles Allen Aug 1933

A Study Of The Tolerance Of Certain Species Of Fishes For Low Dissolved Oxygen & Increased Carbon Dioxide Concentrations, Charles Allen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Extensive investigations have been made of the oxygen end carbon dioxide content of water in which fishes live. A review of the literature, however, shows that these studies have not been made under controlled laboratory conditions dealing with the species studied in this investigation. It was the purpose of this study to determine the lowest concentration of dissolved oxygen that will support certain species of fishes and, also, the lethal effects resulting from increased carbon dioxide tension as determined under carefully controlled laboratory conditions.

The Relation Of The Native Forest Cover To The Physical And Chemical Nature Of The Soils Of The Mammoth Cave National Park Area, Sheppard Walker Aug 1933

The Relation Of The Native Forest Cover To The Physical And Chemical Nature Of The Soils Of The Mammoth Cave National Park Area, Sheppard Walker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study was undertaken for the purpose of determining the relation existing between the native forest cover and the chemical and physical properties of the soils of the Mammoth Cave National Park area. The study was suggested by certain references in the literature to a correlation existing between forest cover and the geological, chemical and physical nature of soils of this area. The recent attempt at reforestation in the Mammoth Cave National Park area renders such a study timely, and it is believed that the results reported in this paper will materially aid the Mammoth Cave National Park Commission and …

The Native And Cultivated Gymnospersm Of Eastern Wisconsin, Mary Stapleton Jun 1933

The Native And Cultivated Gymnospersm Of Eastern Wisconsin, Mary Stapleton

Bachelors’ Theses

Since the late years of the nineteenth century, botanists have grouped all seed-bearing plants into two main divisions, those with no seed cases, that is with naked seeds, end those the seeds of which are enclosed in a husk, pod, or other covering. The former are Gymnosperms; the latter Angiosperms.

Bachelors’ Theses

The Matrimony-vines are shrubs with usually spiny branches, rigid in some species, slender and arching or procumbent in others, with small and rather narrow, usually grayish green leaves, and dull-colored whitish, purplish, or violet flowers and scarlet, rarely yellow or black, berries. Most of the species are tender but Lycium halimlfollum, L. chinense, and also Lycium turcomanicum and L. ruthenlcum are hardy and thrive in the north temperate regions.

The Effect Of Theelin Upon The Growth And Development Of The Genital Tracts Of The Female White Rat, Robert H. Grogan May 1933

The Effect Of Theelin Upon The Growth And Development Of The Genital Tracts Of The Female White Rat, Robert H. Grogan

Bachelors’ Theses

This paper has been designed to meet the requirements of a bachelor's thesis. The main substance of the thesis is a reiteration of some of the work done by other men in the field of ovarian hormones with some original work on the part of the author. I have endeavored to prove that theelin controls, to some extent at least, the development of the genital tracts of female white rats. Especial care was taken to follow out in detail the methods used by Doisy and his associates in similar experiments so that I would have a criterion by which to …

Bird Studies Of The Bear River Marshes, Ernest W. Parkinson May 1933

Bird Studies Of The Bear River Marshes, Ernest W. Parkinson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The establishment of the Bear River Bay Bird Refuge has created for the state of Utah an immense and valuable biological field, a veritable paradise for naturalist and sportsman alike. The naturalist wants a place to study wild life and the sportsman desires game. With the proper control of open seasons on wild fowl the hunting instinct and incentive for the sport should be satisfied for the sportsman. To the naturalist this region will open up bountiful treasures of knowledge that is to be gained only by intense and prolonged scientific study.

A Morphological Study Of Daphniidae, Stanley E. Zawodny May 1933

A Morphological Study Of Daphniidae, Stanley E. Zawodny

Bachelors’ Theses

Th importance of fresh-water organisms is usually underestimated, especially by the very people who live near bodies of fresh-water and who thus can observe such organisms throughout the year. It is really easier to study minute life forms than it is to study larger organisms, for the former can be examined under all kinds of conditions as experiments are performed upon them. The purpose of this thesis is to give a short survey of the chief type among the fresh-water, Crustaceans, with special reference to morphology.

Heredity In Twinning, Dolores M. Kauffung May 1933

Heredity In Twinning, Dolores M. Kauffung

Bachelors’ Theses

Identical twins have been tn basis for a large amount of the evidence produced by scientists in upholding the contention that heredity is stronger and more important than environment.

It has been the purpose of this paper and the intention oi' the author to develop this theory and to attempt to discover how far heredity really affects the individual and. to what extent it may be influenced by environment.

Parasitology: With Special Reference To The Frog, Leo M. Boxer May 1933

Parasitology: With Special Reference To The Frog, Leo M. Boxer

Bachelors’ Theses

Prior to the middle of the sixteenth century the knowledge of parasites, their habits, life-histories and forms as limited to a few external parasites and a few parasitic worms. Previous to the discovery of, and knowledge gained by, the study of microscopic parasites, and the effects produced by them, nearly all diseases were thought of as some sort of punishment for sins committed.

Contributions To The Anatomy Of The Mature Larva Of Papilio Polyxenes Fab. (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), Ernst J. Dornfeld Apr 1933

Contributions To The Anatomy Of The Mature Larva Of Papilio Polyxenes Fab. (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), Ernst J. Dornfeld

Bachelors’ Theses

Thia study was undertaken with the purpose of gathering more comprehensive information on the larval anatomy of a typical member of the lepidopterous family Papilionidae. Except for investigations dealing with the osmeteria, literature on the general anatomy of this otherwise well known family is very scant. Because of the relatively small number of specimens that were available for study, this paper has been limited to a discussion of the external anatomy and of the gross . morphology of the digestive tract, the urinary system, the silk glands, and the mandibular glands. Important papers in which these structures have been …

Origin Of The Limb Musculature In The Mouse., R Wendell Coffelt Jan 1933

Origin Of The Limb Musculature In The Mouse., R Wendell Coffelt

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

One of the most important and much disputed questions in the field of developmental anatomy is the role the myotomes play in the development of the limb musculature. At present there are two explanations advanced concerning the development of the limb-musculature in mammals. The first is that limb-buds arise as local thickening of the somatopleure, which becomes filled with a homogeneous syncytial mesenchymal tissue, that later becomes innervated with muscle-buds from the myotomes and with blood vessels, and nerves from the trunk of th embryo. The second method explained as to the origin of limb muscles is that they are …

Trichomonas Fulicae Sp. Nov. From Fulica Americana, Elizabeth G. Lash Jan 1933

Trichomonas Fulicae Sp. Nov. From Fulica Americana, Elizabeth G. Lash

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Numerous trichomonad flagelletes from the intestines or various birds have been described; but as fas as the writer has been able to discover, none from the intestine of the coot, Fulica americana. Martin and Robertson (1911) described Trichomones eberthi and T. gallinerum from the caecum of fowls; Kotlan (1923) described Tetratrichomonas avatis from the caecum of ducks; Tyzzer (1930) described flagellates from the ruffed grouse.

However, the species described by the above authors are quite different from Trichomonas to be described in this paper. This organism is definitely a member of the genus Trichomonas since it possesses the distinguishing characteristics …

Sporogenesis In Riccia Natans L., Mary Fortunata Aug 1932

Sporogenesis In Riccia Natans L., Mary Fortunata

Bachelors’ Theses

Until comparatively recent years little, comprehensive Cytological work had been done on the lower forms of plant life including the Liverworts. Cavers (1903) stated that Micheli in 1729 named a species "Hepaticae fontana" because of the supposed resemblance between the branched thallus and the lobes of the liver, and although this species was later named "Fegatella conica", the name "Hepaticae" has, since then, been applied to the whole group of Liverworts. Between 1850 and 1862 Hofmeister demonstrated "Alternation of Generations" in this group, and it was this characteristic that distinguished them permanently …

The Reaction Of Salts On The Regional Muscular Activity Of The Earthworm, Ernest D. Habeger Jul 1932

The Reaction Of Salts On The Regional Muscular Activity Of The Earthworm, Ernest D. Habeger

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Though a great amount of work has been done concerning the effects of salts upon the organic constituents of all muscular tissues of the earthworm, very little has actually been accomplished showing the effect of salts on the rhythmic contractions of that animal. However, the normal peristaltic activity of the muscles of the earthworm has been shown to represent a characteristic behavior from its anterior to its posterior extremity.

It is the purpose of this investigation to demonstrate the effects of various concentrations of salts on this normal rhythmic activity of the various regions of the earthworm.

A Study Of Some Species Of Pediastrum And Scenedesmus, Irene Cull Jun 1932

A Study Of Some Species Of Pediastrum And Scenedesmus, Irene Cull

Bachelors’ Theses

Although regarded by the untrained observer as slime, filth and scum, algae are fascinating to the botanist who has become interested in them. Algae are found everywhere; they are our commonest water plants. Among the green algae we have some of the most beautiful and fascinating forms in the plant kingdom and undoubtedly Pediastrum and Scenedesmus, the two genera studied, are among the most beautiful of all.

The Pituitary, Thyroid, And Adrenal Glands Of The Opossum, Max F. Drozewski May 1932

The Pituitary, Thyroid, And Adrenal Glands Of The Opossum, Max F. Drozewski

Bachelors’ Theses

In recent years a great deal has been written on the endocrine glands. However most of the articles deal with the physiological function of the various ductless glands only. Very little of this literature deals with the anatomical structure of the organs themselves. In this thesis we shall discuss the anatomical structure of the endocrine glands namely, the Pituitary(hypophysis), Thyroid and the Adrenal of a marsupial. The work has been done on the opossum of the virginia species, Didelphis virginiana. Only two specimens were available for dissection.

In delving into the literature concerning the Spleen one is greatly surprised to find so much diversity of opinion concerning its origin, histology and functions.

The Endocrine Glands And Their Secretions, Eldred M. Moehrke May 1932

The Endocrine Glands And Their Secretions, Eldred M. Moehrke

Bachelors’ Theses

In the following work the endocrine system was considered in general with special emphasis on the thyroid and para-thyroid glands. In some manner, which we do not well understand, the thyroid and the para-thyroid glands affect the other ductless glands and it is this relationship that is stressed.
