Histological Study Of The Small Intestine Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis, Robert George Stineman Jun 1945

Histological Study Of The Small Intestine Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis, Robert George Stineman

Bachelors’ Theses

Although much work has been done histologically with the vertebrates, very little seems to have been done on the intestinal tract of the reptile. This is especially true of the snakes, despite the abundant sources of material. Reptiles are one of the first classes of vertebrates in which there is a distinction made between small and large intestine. Histology textbooks devote only a few lines to the histology of the reptilian small intestine. For this reason it seems that it would be worthwhile to make a detailed study of that portion of the intestinal tract immediately distal to the duodenum …

The Histology Of The Digestive Tract Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis 3. Esophagus, Janice Jean Mcfarlane Jun 1945

The Histology Of The Digestive Tract Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis 3. Esophagus, Janice Jean Mcfarlane

Bachelors’ Theses

This is the third in a series of investigations of the comparative histology of the digestive tract of Thamnophis sirtalis, the common green snake. Comparatively little recent work of this nature upon any of the class Reptilia, and especially upon the order Ophidia, seems to have been undertaken. Kendall(1940) makes no mention of Ophidia, but discusses briefly the digestive system of the lizard, limiting his treatment of the esophagus to a few lines. Cole (1941) has an equally short and general discussion of the digestive system of Thamnophis sirtalis, again devoting but a brief space to his discussion of the …

Atypical Conditions Of The Inferior Vena Cava, Mary F. Reagan Jun 1945

Atypical Conditions Of The Inferior Vena Cava, Mary F. Reagan

Bachelors’ Theses

Extensive dissection of various mammalian forms, expecially of man, the rabbit, and the cat has led to a recognition of a certain vascular pattern of the inferior vena cava which is typical for the group, It occurs so consistently that the occasional specimens which differ from it are of interest because of both their ontogenetic and phylogenetic significance.

The Feulgen Reaction Applied To Various Platyhelminthes And Small Ascarid Worms Mounted In Toto In Balsam Oil, Louise R. Russort Jun 1945

The Feulgen Reaction Applied To Various Platyhelminthes And Small Ascarid Worms Mounted In Toto In Balsam Oil, Louise R. Russort

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem involved in this experiment was the application of the Feulgen Reaction to a number of flatworms and small ascarid worms, in an attempt to ascertain whether or not a practical staining technique, (showing clear differentiation of nuclear material, etc., from the surrounding cuticle and cytoplasm) -- may be developed, by staining and mounting them in toto. The Feulgen Reaction was used in this experiment, not as a specific indicator for thymonucleic acid, but rather as a cytological stain. Some attention will be focused upon the reaction's specificity, however, in the following discussion of the development of the reaction …

Some Technique Methods For Preparing Slides Of The Paramecium, Irene Padley Jun 1945

Some Technique Methods For Preparing Slides Of The Paramecium, Irene Padley

Bachelors’ Theses

Du Jardin (1835) was probably the first to recognize in protozoa, living substance. To this substance, he applied the word sarcode. In 1861, Max Schultze expressed the idea that sarcode and protoplasm are the same thing.

Making Permanent Mounts Of Fern Gametophytes, Gail Seeraphine Barczak Feb 1945

Making Permanent Mounts Of Fern Gametophytes, Gail Seeraphine Barczak

Bachelors’ Theses

One of the botanists first to grow fern gametophytes from spores whicch were sown on moist clay was Farlow (1874), a student of the famous botanist, DeBary, professor of Botany at the University of Strassburg in Germany. Farlow sowed the spores of Ptteris cretica var. albo-lineata on moist clay placed into small flower pots. Watering was accomplished from the top. There was no sterilization of the culture medium. The gametophytes of this fern were also grown under the same conditions by DeBary (1878). Steil (1919a) grew the prothalli of Ptteris sulcata and Ptteris cretica var. albo-lineata in the same manner …

A cyto-gentical study was attempted of the males of the Ichneumonoid wasp Habrobracon juglandis (ashm.) The larval of this wasp are parasitic on the larval of a flour moth Ephestid kuekniella (zeller). The males of this wasp were disected and slides were made of the testes. Different staining techniques were used in order to determine which ones would give the best results.

The Development Of Bone In The Chick Embryo, Helen M. Koelsch Oct 1944

The Development Of Bone In The Chick Embryo, Helen M. Koelsch

Bachelors’ Theses

The day by day development of the bone in the chicken embryo as determined by the fixing and staining of embryos for each twenty-four hour growth period during the time of greatest skeletal development, is the subject of this paper. The stage in the embryological history of the chick during which the most important phases of bone development occur was determined to be the period between the seventh and the sixteenth days of incubation. It is therefore the purpose of this investigation to give an account of the growth and development of the bones of the ordinary domestic fowl as …

Histology Of The Stomach Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis, Lois Doerfler Oct 1944

Histology Of The Stomach Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis, Lois Doerfler

Bachelors’ Theses

This is another in the series treating the histology of the digestive tract of the reptile. Very little comparative work has been done on the digestive system as a whole and less attention has been paid to the stomach. Kendall (1940) and Cole (1941) devote a slight discussion to a general description of the reptilian stomach. The following report is a more detailed microscopic investigation of the anatomy of the stomach of one of the common species of snakes...

The Utilization Of Grasses And Forbs In Relation To The Intensity Of Grazing In The Mixed Prairie Near Hays, Kansas, Noel Runyon

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The principal occupation of the inhabitants in the Great Plains Region is livestock farming. The problems confronting the farmers and ranchers of this large area are many and varied. Not the least of these problems is the one of a proper stocking rate for the various types of ranges in order to secure a maximum production with the least in capital outlay and range deterioration. Another problem that has presented itself in recent years is the one of revegetating thousands of acres of marginal and semi-marginal land so that mother nature may again heal the marks of erosion and bring …

A Comparative Study Of Dehydration And Infiltration, Jane C. Mahar Feb 1944

A Comparative Study Of Dehydration And Infiltration, Jane C. Mahar

Bachelors’ Theses

Dehydration is the process of removing water from tissue which has been fixed and hardened. It is a necessary step for the Infiltration of paraffin. If the dehydrating agent is not a solvent of the paraffin, it is necessary to use a solvent first and then infiltrate with paraffin. Dehydration, according to Sass (1940), has some washing action besides making the material firm and, in some cases, hard and brittle. When Bouin’s fixing fluid is used, ethyl alcohol is the solvent used in removing the solution and in washing the material. Dehydrating agents which possess hygrosopic properties are those most …

Heterothallism In Schizophyllum Commune, Lois G. Wilbershide Feb 1944

Heterothallism In Schizophyllum Commune, Lois G. Wilbershide

Bachelors’ Theses

For many years, workers have been striving to arrive at definite conclusions in regard to heterothallism in a great variety of plants. Much work has been done and there are many instances where heterothallism has been established and confirmed. Yet, in regard to Schizophyllum commune, few investigators have studied this phenomenon. However, much work of a different nature has been done on Schizophyllum since 1719 when attention was first called to this fungus partly because of the peculiar split character of the gills. It has been collected, classified, and worked on since that time, but the greater share of the …

A Study Of The Respiratory System Of The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Ben Peter Arnowitz Oct 1943

A Study Of The Respiratory System Of The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Ben Peter Arnowitz

Bachelors’ Theses

The respiratory mechanisms of birds, unlike that of mammals, are definitely adapted to the function of flight. Because of this added adaptation, we should expect, therefore, some morphological and perhaps even embryological, physiological, and histological differences. An example of a morphological difference between birds and mammals is the intricate system of air-sacs that are present in birds. This remarkable feature is probably the reason why birds are able to fly as they do.

In this thesis the writer has used the sparrow (Passer domesticus) for the basis of his experiments. This particular bird was chosen in preference to …

Some Physical And Chemical Properties Of Wheat Starch In Relationship To The Maturity Of The Wheat, Claude W. Bice Jul 1943

Some Physical And Chemical Properties Of Wheat Starch In Relationship To The Maturity Of The Wheat, Claude W. Bice

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Wheat is one of the most valuable of economic plants and is grown extensively throughout the world. Because of the unique chemical and physical properties of its gluten, wheat is superior to all other cereals for bread making. Its high starch content provides a tremendous source of energy as a food, as well as filling certain industrial starch needs, especially in textile manufacturing . The present study on properties of immature and mature wheat starches should be of inestimable worth for evaluation of damaged wheats for starch production, as well as for yielding fundamental information which may facilitate the use …

Population Size And Longevity Of Males And Females In Drosophila, Kathleen M. Murphy May 1943

Population Size And Longevity Of Males And Females In Drosophila, Kathleen M. Murphy

Bachelors’ Theses

The two ever present instincts of man are self-preservation and the propagation of the race. At the beginning of one’s life this urge to survive is wholly unconscious but later on this will to live Is supplimented within the individual as a definite conscious search for longevity. Awareness to this inherent and universal desire to live is evidenced by the sought after services of the physician or doctor; the presence of civil law with the law courts and many other protective establishments. This conscious awareness to the possibilities, no matter how slight, of extending or at least maintaining life has …

Studies Of The Excretory System Of The Passer Domesticus, James Julian Stout May 1943

Studies Of The Excretory System Of The Passer Domesticus, James Julian Stout

Bachelors’ Theses

In past years and in recent years most animals have been made a subject of study. However, very little or no research has been made on the most common of all birds, the English Sparrow. This thesis will endeavor to take up the study of the excretory system of the Passer Domesticus. In most animals the excretory organs are the kidneys and the skin, which pass of nitrogenous and other waste matters from the body. I will take up the main organ of this system the kidney at this time, with a histological study of the ureter, and leave the …

A Study Of The Digestive System In The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Henry Joseph Wisniewski May 1943

A Study Of The Digestive System In The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Henry Joseph Wisniewski

Bachelors’ Theses

The digestive tube proper of the Sparrow beings with the Oesophagus. This is a soft tubular organ which serves to convey food rapidly from the pharynx to the stomach. It extends along the median ventral margin of the neck lying dorsal to or to one side of the trachea. Posteriorly, at the base of the neck and shortly in front of the sternum it broadens slightly and gives rise to a dilated region of the oesophagus, namely the Crop, "whose secretion serves to moisten the food or even to initiate digestion." In larger birds as in the pigeon, the crop …

Bachelors’ Theses

this research was undertaken primarily to discover the use of a capillary cross-arm "U" tube in the determination of the electrophoretic and other electrical proper ties of a plastic emulsion.

The primary objective was to determine the isoelectric point of the emulsion and also the optimum pH or electro-endosmotic motion.

The secondary and distant objective was to note when, how, and it any coherent plating on the electrodes took place.

The Study Of The Effects Of Paradichlorbenzene On Drosophila Melanogaster, Dwain J. Paal May 1943

The Study Of The Effects Of Paradichlorbenzene On Drosophila Melanogaster, Dwain J. Paal

Bachelors’ Theses

The object of this investigation was to produce polyploid cells in the salivary glands of Drosophila melanogaster by treatment with paradichlorbenzene. Polyploidy is the condition in which the number of chromosomes in the nucleus is an exact multiple of the somatic or diploid number greater than two. This phenomena has often been referred to as produced by incomplete nuclear division.

The Influence Of Dowicide A On Drosophila Melanogaster, Helen Mary Dore May 1943

The Influence Of Dowicide A On Drosophila Melanogaster, Helen Mary Dore

Bachelors’ Theses

Drosophila melanogaster plays a far greater part in science than man at first realizes. A study of their heredity makes it possible to develop laws of human heredity and with this knowledge, thus provide for the betterment of mankind. Considerations which lead to the choice of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, in experimentation are briefly the following: (a) its small size which makes, it convenient to keep; (b) its short life cycle; and (c) the ease with which it can be cultivated. Since fruit flies are so important to science, it follows that it is also important that a …

The Biological Effect Of An Invisible Radiation On The Drosophila Melanogaster, Leo C. Massopust Jr. Apr 1943

The Biological Effect Of An Invisible Radiation On The Drosophila Melanogaster, Leo C. Massopust Jr.

Bachelors’ Theses

In a series of investigations, Massopust describes various effects he obtained with an invisible radiation which he called infra-red. The results he obtained seemed to indicate that this radiation might have some effect on development and growth. Hence, the Drosophila Melanogaster was chosen for experimentation to ascertain whether or not the invisible radiation he used would produce mutations. Personal communications from this author disclosed that up to the present writing he has not been able to establish definitely that the radiation lies somewhere in the infra-red band of the electro-magnetic field. He does, however, favor the interpretation that it is …

The Comparative Difference In Skeletal Structure Of Two Strains Of The Mus Musculus, Pasqual A. Capitanelli Oct 1942

The Comparative Difference In Skeletal Structure Of Two Strains Of The Mus Musculus, Pasqual A. Capitanelli

Bachelors’ Theses

Father Raymond H. Reis, S.J., and Robert A. Littleford, Ph.D., both of the staff of Marquette's University Zoology department, while working upon an experiment in the feeding to the common house mouse, "Mus Musculus", noted that in the two strains of mice that were used, the white variety of mouse was a trifle larger than the black variety, but that their weights were identical. They suggested the possibility of a skeletal difference that seemed to be most prominent in the head of the mice.

A Study Of The Relationship Existing Between Certain Insects And Some Native Western Kansas Forbs And Weedy Plants, Carl Theodore Brandhorst Jul 1942

A Study Of The Relationship Existing Between Certain Insects And Some Native Western Kansas Forbs And Weedy Plants, Carl Theodore Brandhorst

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

To the casual observer perhaps no sight could be more commonplace than that of an insect alighting upon a Kansas sunflower. But the relationship which exists between plant and insect is a matter which is often unknown even to the specialist. And yet a lack of understanding of these relationships has at times resulted in inconvenience, loss and even in calamity. To determine the relationship which certain insects bear to some of our native western Kansas forbs and weedy plants is the purpose of this study.
