The Sandia and Manzano Mountain area is divided into communities based mainly on the major types of vegetation present. These communities and their relationships to biotic provinces, life zones, and habitats are described in the section that deals with the description of the area. Several collecting sites were established in each of these communities, and an effort was made to set traps in all available types of mammal habitats.

The fact that shoots grow upwards and roots grow downwards is common knowledge. These recognized tendencies are called "geotropic reactions". We apply the term, "positive geotropism" to the tendency of roots growing downwards; meaning that they respond in a positive manner to the pull of gravity. To the response of shoots we apply the term, "negative geotropism", which signifies that their growth is away from the pull of gravity.

During the spring semesters of 1955 and 1956, while the writer was under the supervision of Dr. A. E. Noble, a preliminary survey was initiated on parasites in local fishes, amphibians, and reptiles occurring in the vicinity of Stockton, California. The collection of specimens in this survey included sixteen green sunfish, Lepomis cyanella, and two bluegills, L. macrochirus. Larval trematodes recovered from the heart and liver of these specimens belonged to the family Diplostomatidae Poirier (1886) which is characterized by a conspicuous constriction separating the fore and hind-bodies. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of including some definite chemistry content in high school biology. This evaluation was made by comparing outcomes of instruction in two different groups of a high school biology course. The two groups were equated in terms of the intelligence quotients, the sex, and the previous achievement in biology of the class members. The comparative gains in factual knowledge were measured by means of an evaluation test. The comparative gains in appreciations and interests in biology were measured with a questionnaire.

Of those organisms upon the face of the earth displaying a wide range of variability, excellent examples may be found amoung certain groups of the fungi. This extreme variation as noted in certain fungal groups becomes even more interesting when the phenomenon of sexuality is eliminated or of rare occur­rence as in many of the Fungi Imperfecti. Such extreme varia­tions occur in Allescheria Boydii, whose historical background is as interesting as the growth of the fungus itself.

Often some reference is made to the "flight" of a .species of ants as if all the males and females left the colony .on one day. W. M. Wheeler, in his 1905 account of the genus Dolichoderus, said .o D. mariae" "August 20 is approximately the date of the nuptial flight oi this species." Today it is generally understood that there are usually a number oi flights. This study shows that D. mariae is conspicuous in this respect.

The golden shiner, Notemigonus crysoleucaa, forms a monotypic species in the fish family, Cyprinidae. It is a medium-sized minnow which inhabits ponds and sluggish freshwater streams in North America from latitude; 30°N. to 50°N. In the south its range is restricted to the area east of the Appalachian Mountains. The northern and western part of the range extends to Wyoming and south to the drainages of the Arkansas and upper Ohio Rivers.

Previous work carried out at Marquette University has proved that seawater evaporator scale can be prevented if such things as dehydrated alfalfa foliage or dehydrated corn, oats, pea and grass foliage are added to the feed seawater.

In 1933, Japanese workers produced liver cancer in rats by feeding o-amino-azo-toluene (cited by Rusch, et al. 1945, p.267). The carcinogenecity of the azo dyes became especially important since the incidence of these liver tumors varied profoundly with the composition of the diet in which it was given. Similar variations due to the diet had not been orbserved with the types of carcinogens. From further studies, in which known compenents were added to purified diets, both protective (anticarcinogenic) and augmenting (procarcinogenic) influences could be ascribed to individual components.

The purpose of the present study is to obtain information relative to the taxonomy, geographical distribution, and ecology of the pseudoscorpions of the Mississippi River drainage basin, with the exception of areas of headwater tributary streams. The present study is geographically restricted to the area bounded on the west by North Dakota, Kansas, and Oklahoma and on the east by Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and ranges from the Canadian border on the north to the Gulf of Mexico on the south.

An attempt has been made to collect, identify, and classify all the four tribes Agrostideae, Andropogoneae, Aveneae, and Chlorideae within the confines of Bernalillo County, New Mexico. Specimens have been examined from the herbarium of the University of New Mexico, the regional Forest Service herbarium, and the regional Soil Conservation Service herbarium, all located in Albuquerque. Species reported from Bernalillo County in these herbaria and unobserved by the author have been included in the thesis.

The relative biological effectiveness of several radiations of differing specific ionizations was determined. The radiation effect studied was impairment of bone marrow function, and the biological test system used was the depression of Fe⁵⁹ uptake by the red blood cells of male Sprague-Dawley rats. The effectiveness of the mixed radiations in the thermal column of a homogeneous reactor was compared with 250-KVP X radiation, and the effect of the beta particles of tritium was compared with that of Co⁶⁰ gamma rays. The effect of the alpha particles of Pu and Ra on bone marrow function was also determined. …
