Biosystematic Evidence For Hybridization Between Lysimachia Quadriflora Sims And Lysimachia Hybrida Michaux (Primulaceae), Michael Owen Dillon
Biosystematic Evidence For Hybridization Between Lysimachia Quadriflora Sims And Lysimachia Hybrida Michaux (Primulaceae), Michael Owen Dillon
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Putative hybrids between Lysimachia guadriflora and L. hybrida were discovered in a marsh in Dickinson County in northwest Iowa. No previous reports of interspecific hybridization between these species were found in the literature. Ecological barriers usually separate the parental species; however, at this population, disturbances by grazing animals and yearly fluctuations in the water level allow them to exist sympatrically. The parental species have concurrent flowering periods, similar floral morphology and pigmentation, and are pollinated by non-specific pollinators. The disturbances also provide a wide range of microhabitats intermediate to those of the parents. Thus, hybridization has resulted because of the …

Mosquitoes Of Black Hawk County, Iowa, Martin Burdett Christiansen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Mosquito populations of Black Hawk County, Iowa, were studied during the summers of 1970 and 1971. The primary sampling technique was the New Jersey light trap with supplementary collections of biting adults to determine species of importance to man. Twenty-two species of mosquitoes were collected in the county. This represents ten species more than had been previously reported from Black Hawk County. Information is presented on the relative abundance and seasonal succession of each species. Aedes vexans (Meigen) and A. trivittatus (Coquillett) were the primary pests of man, occurring from June through August. Aedes sticticus (Meigen) ranked as the third …
The Effects Of Estrogen On Ionized Calcium In Ovariectomized Calciphylactic Rats, Edward Luverne Hatcher
The Effects Of Estrogen On Ionized Calcium In Ovariectomized Calciphylactic Rats, Edward Luverne Hatcher
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This research was an attempt to discover the relationship between estrogen treatment and the serum calcium levels in ovariectomized rats. An attempt was also made to study the possible effects of estrogen on calcium deposition during the calcification process by utilizing the calciphylaxis phenomena as a potential biological model. Concentrations of ionized and total calcium in the serum of ovariectomized rats were measured utilizing a calcium selective electrode system and atomic absorption spectroscopy procedures respectively. This was done following 3- and 6-day treatments with estrogen (0.1 µg). The same analysis was used in the calciphylactic treatment procedures both with and …
Gastrointestinal Bacteria Of A Healthy Sheep, Paul Berger
Gastrointestinal Bacteria Of A Healthy Sheep, Paul Berger
Biology ETDs
Various portions of the gastrointestinal tract of a healthy sheep were sampled to determine the types of bacteria indigenous to the different areas. These portions included the abomasum, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, ascending colon, spiral colon, and descending colon. A minimum test set technique was developed and used to identify the bacteria. No definite pattern emerged when one region was compared with another region, although the total bacterial count for both the abomasum and the duodenum was less than that of the other locations sampled. Escherichia coli and an infrequent E. freundii were the only enteric bacteria found in the …

Absorption And Translocation Of Chelated Iron By Barley And Rice, Ching-Chang Eugene Li
Biology ETDs
A study was made of iron absorption and translocation in the Mimi variety of barley and the Saturn variety of rice. Various iron chelates were used as sources of iron in nutrient solutions. Radioactive iron was used in some experiments to investigate absorption and translocation of iron in both plant species.
Plants were grown in nutrient solutions with different levels of iron to compare the chlorophyll content, dry weight and iron content in shoots and roots. It was found that iron deficiency decreased chlorophyll content and iron content in tissue and also decreased growth of the shoots and roots. An …

Extracellular Production Of Coagulase, Deoxyribonuclease Acid Phosphatase, Alkaline Phosphatase, And Lipase By Staphylococcus Aureus, Robert Lee Nelson
Biology ETDs
The activity of extracellular coagulase, deoxyribonuclease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and lipase for 10 strains of Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. The enzymatic activities were also tested for the presence of a specific enzyme inactivator. The relationship of EH and cell density to the five enzymes was also studied.
The extracellular enzymes used in these experiments were prepared by removing cells by centrifugation from the broth of O, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 hr cultures. Cell numbers were determined by the standard plate count method. Inactivation of specific enzymes was measured by mixing equal volumes of 6 hr broth …
Coexistence In Unisexual-Bisexual Species Complexes Of Poeciliopsis (Pisces: Poeciliidae), William S. Moore, Frances E. Mckay
Coexistence In Unisexual-Bisexual Species Complexes Of Poeciliopsis (Pisces: Poeciliidae), William S. Moore, Frances E. Mckay
Biological Sciences Faculty Research Publications
All-female forms of Poeciliopsis rely on males of closely related bisexual species for sperm. The natural habitat of Poeciliopsis in Sonora, Mexico, consists of a variety of small ponds connected by intermittent watercourses. Optimal areas, containing mixed female aggregates, are defended by territorial males. Social structure in natural populations very closely resembles that of laboratory experiments, wherein subordinant males show reduced mate discrimination and inseminate unisexuals.
An equation relating male density to unisexual inseminations is used in a computer simulation model of a population. A stable equilibrium is inherent in unisexual-bisexual species complexes but the level of equilibrium is affected …
Vocalizations Of The Townsend Chipmunk (Eutamias Townsendii), Greig Michael Warner
Vocalizations Of The Townsend Chipmunk (Eutamias Townsendii), Greig Michael Warner
Dissertations and Theses
This study describes and analyzes the vocalizations of the Townsend chipmunk (Eutamias townsendii) in Oregon. Tape recordings of calls were collected primarily from Forest Park in Portland (Oregon) during 1970 and 1971, and sonograms of these recordings were produced. Findings were compared with those of Brand (1970) who investigated E. townsendii vocalizations in California. The prominent calls in the vocal repertoire of townsendii are the quist, the quirt, and the chipper. These calls all appear to be warning calls. The quist note is a a chevron-shaped (A) figure representing a sound which begins at a low frequency (1-2 KC), sharply …
Serological Studies On Twelve Species Of Candida, Etta W. Fraser
Serological Studies On Twelve Species Of Candida, Etta W. Fraser
Theses & Dissertations
The studies on the serology of Candida emphasize the fact that their antigenic structure is complicated. The results of the agglutination, precipitin reactions and complement fixation tests are confusing, contradictory and, so far, too impractical for the clinical laboratory. This study is an attempt to clarify the situation by using the newer techniques of the Ouchterlogy agar gel-diffusion precipitin method, (18) the hemolysin method, as well as the usual agglutination procedure. Since the precipitin method appears of possible value in diagnosis, this will be the main emphasis in this work.
Participation Of The Renin-Angiotensin System In The Control Of Vascular Capacity During Hemorrhagic Hypotension, James Robert Powell
Participation Of The Renin-Angiotensin System In The Control Of Vascular Capacity During Hemorrhagic Hypotension, James Robert Powell
Masters Theses
Introduction
Review of the Literature
Severe hypotension has long been held as being one of the most potent stimuli for activation·of the mechanisms responsible for circulatory homeostasis. It has been accepted that the most immediate response to hypotension involves activation of the autonomic nervous system causing an increased vascular tone. In addition to various neurogenic mechanisms that function to cause an increase in vascular tone, several humeral mechanisms have also been implicated.
Rocha e Silva and Rosenberg (1969) described the release of vasopressin (ADH) from the posterior lobe of the pituitary in response to hemorrhage in the dog. They postulated …

The Relation Of Temperature To Calcification In Montipora Verrucosa, Walter W. Cox
The Relation Of Temperature To Calcification In Montipora Verrucosa, Walter W. Cox
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A method for quantitatively comparing calcification rates in coral was used to find an optimum growth temperature for Montipora verrueosa. This method is based on the uptake of the radioactive isotope ca45. By supplying the water the corals are growing i·n with a known amount of radioactivity and comparing this with the activity of the coral samples, a rate of Ca45C03 incorporation can be determined per unit of time.
Various tests show that inorganic exchange does not appear to be a significant factor in interpretation of the results obtained. The edge of a colony calcifies …
An Extension Of The Cochran Q Test, Soo-Young Cho
An Extension Of The Cochran Q Test, Soo-Young Cho
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The familiar x 2 test is ordinarily used to compare percentage distributions of categorical data for two or more independent samples. A more accurate com parison of the percentages is sometimes obtained if the samples consist of matched individuals. The NcNemar test is generally used when comparing only two related samples. Where there are three or more samples the Cochran Q test is used. Both of these tests apply only to the case of dichotomized responses. This thesis extends the Cochran Q test to the case where the responses are multinomial. A generalized statistic corresponding to Cochran's result is obtained. …
An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Citellus Townsendii Townsendii (Bachman) In Central Washington, Mark Roy Fuller
An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Citellus Townsendii Townsendii (Bachman) In Central Washington, Mark Roy Fuller
All Master's Theses
This study of the behavior of Citellus townsendii townsendii was based on field observations of animals at their northern most distribution. The squirrels' seasonal activity and behavioral repertoire, when considered with environmental parameters, suggest important adaptations for survival. The animals were in torpor from about July to February. Activity generally occurred during the midmorning hours, allowing them to avoid temperature extremes. Quantitative analysis of behavioral observations indicated that most activities occurred in a non-random order.

Intestinal Absorption And Lipolysis Of Safflower Oil And Other Unsaturated Vegetable Oils In Rats, Robert Leslie Gregory
Intestinal Absorption And Lipolysis Of Safflower Oil And Other Unsaturated Vegetable Oils In Rats, Robert Leslie Gregory
Master's Theses
The intestinal lipolysis and absorption of safflower, corn, peanut, olive, cottonseed and soybean oils were studied in the rat. Oils and pancreatic lipase were injected into the rat jejunum and ileum (ligated in situ), and the amount of esterified fatty acids absorbed and free fatty acids present in the gut after 3 hours was determined.
Safflower oil was absorbed significantly less than the other oils. There was no significant difference between the absorption rates of the other oils. When the oils were subjected to porcine pancreatic lipase in vitro, safflower oil also exhibited the lowest rate of hydrolysis.
The rates …

The Induced Differentiation Of Mouse Ectoderm To Epidermis By Growth On Freeze-Thawed Dermis, Albert Joseph Banes
The Induced Differentiation Of Mouse Ectoderm To Epidermis By Growth On Freeze-Thawed Dermis, Albert Joseph Banes
Master's Theses
Previous investigators have grown or maintained adult or embryonic skin in tissue culture and on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of chickens. These studies have revealed two important factors involved in culturing skin: (1) the presence of an inducer which originates in the dermis and affects the phenotype of epithelial cells; and (2) the influence of the physical surface of the substrate on which epidermis is cultured.
The current investigation presents evidence that ectoderm from the limb buds of 10 to 12 day-old mouse embryos can form an epidermis when combined with dermis killed by alternate freezing and thawing, and cultured …
Investigations Of Biochemical Relationships In New Mexico Ribes (Saxifragaceae), John G. Mexal
Investigations Of Biochemical Relationships In New Mexico Ribes (Saxifragaceae), John G. Mexal
Biology ETDs
The classification of Ribes based on morphological characters is hampered by interspecific similarities. Nine species found in New Mexico were studied chemotaxonomically on the basis of flavonoid variability and content. A soxhlet extraction apparatus was used to extract the flavonoids. Methanolic extracts of both fresh and preserved leaves were studied using thin-layer chromatography. The results supported the current subgeneric breakdown of Ribes into Ribesia and Grossularia. Ribesia contains between two and four anthocyanins, while Grossularia contains no detectable anthocyanins. Evidence presented in this paper indicates that R. aureum Pursh (Ribesia) and R. inerme Rydb. (Grossularia) are misplaced subgenerically. Biochemically, at …
Effects Of Insulin, Sodium And D-Glucose On Amino Acid Absorption In The Intestine Of Rats, Andre-Gerard Craan
Effects Of Insulin, Sodium And D-Glucose On Amino Acid Absorption In The Intestine Of Rats, Andre-Gerard Craan
Dissertations and Theses
Amino acid absorption across rat intestine in vitro was inhibited or stimulated by insulin depending on the hormone serosal concentration.
The absence of sodium ions from the incubating solution resulted in a significant decrease of L-alanine absorption. However, L-alanine was enhanced in a sodium-free medium by the addition of insulin on the serosal side of the intestine.
A sizable decrease in L-alanine and L-lysine absorption was produced by introduction of D-glucose (0.2 % and 2 %) in the Krebs-Ringer's incubating buffer. Nevertheless, the presence of D-glucose did not prevent the stimulatory effect of insulin on amino acid absorption.
