Immunological Studies Of The Host Parasite Relationship Of Dirofilaria Immitis In Domestic Canines, Douglas Felton Qualls

Canine immunoglobulins of the IgG group were shown to be intimately associated with the cuticle of circulating non-infection Dirofilaria immitis microfilaria. The significance of these immunoglobulins in blocking a complete immune response in the definitive host is discussed. Immunodiffusion, immunoelectrophoresis and fluorescent inhibition techniques are described and their applicability to the study of host-parasite relationships are evaluated. A rapid reproducible method for the production of specifically labeled anti-D. immitis microfilaria globulins is presented.

Few simultaneous comparative studies of functional diversity have been made at the genus level. Four genera (Pogonomyrmex, Veromessor, Formica, Myrmecocystus) of ants were compared, two of them represented by two species each. Under controlled temperatures, in alternating light and dark, there was more difference in phase of rhythm among than within genera. This evidence adds to previous field evidence for a taxonomic explanation of such diversity in ants.

The genus Staphylococcus is a member of the family Micrococcaceae which includes three other general Micrococcus, Planococcus and Aerococcus. The four which have the same morphology and gram reaction may be distinguished from each other on the basis of arrangement, the utilization of glucose, the presence or abscence of cytochromes, oxygen requirements, motility and the G + C content of DNA. What happens in the lung is that air meets blood. Figure 1 shows the lung's architecture. Focus your attention upon the smallest scale structures which are the termini of the air passages. These are the alveolar air sacs or, simply, alveoli. The inhalation/exhalation actions of the lung, alternately, flood these alveoli with atmospheric air and expel its oxygen-poor/carbon dioxide-rich replacement. The uptake, distribution and depuration of a water soluble, mono-aromatic hydrocarbon contained in petroleum and refined products was studied in two species of marine fish, Nature northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) and juvenile striped bass (Horone saxatilis) were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of ¹⁴c benzene for 48 hours. Residues in tissues exhibiting a high lipid content (non-metabolic pathway) or representing apparent major metabolic sites were measured during the exposure and afterwards when the fish were transferred to clean seawater. Reproductive Ecology And Population Dynamics Of Two Sympatric Species Of Macoma (Bivalvia), John Gibson Rae Iii

Populations of the sympatric intertidal bivalves, Macoma secta and M. nasuta are compared as to reproductive ecology and population dynamics. Histological examination of seasonal gonadal changes indicate that both species undergo dormancy in the winter months and rapid gamete proliferation in the spring. However, the timing of spawning differs. The M. secta population synchronously spawned in August while the M. nasuta population spawned lightly in late spring and more heavily in the fall. Fecundity estimates indicate M. nasuta adds 140% of winter weight in gametes and M. secta only adds 43% of winter weight in gametes. Spat fall was detected …

In this study the distribution and effects of bacterial endotoxin were examined. Adult male BALB/c and adult male DUB/ICR mice were used in all experiments. Endotoxic activity of a number of strains from three genera of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Bacteroides, and Listeria, was detected using vincristine-treated mice as sensitized indicators for endotoxin and resistance to purified endotoxin induced by pretreatment with selected bacteria. Also, the effect of bacterial endotoxin and endotoxin-like substances on the course of primary amebic meningoencephalitis in mice, caused by Naegleria fowleri, was assessed.

Beginning in May, 1973 and continuing through August, 1974 the food habits of several species of game fishes from Lake Anna, Virginia were investigated via gut content analysis. A variety of collecting methods were employed to secure specimens for examination and stomach contents were reported as percent frequency of occurrence. A total of one hundred and two collections were made yielding 287 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacépède); 166 chain pickerel, Esox; niger LeSueur; 53 bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque; 32 pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus); and 63 black crappie, Pomoxis nigromaculatus (LeSueur). A structural analysis of the compound eye of Hemigrapsus nudus expands the basis of functional analysis of decapod Crustacean eyes. Contradictory evidence for disintegration of rhabdomeric microvilli in the absence of light prompted observation of H. nudus eyes after 146 days in darkness.

Eyes were fixed with formalin and glutaraldehyde and post fixed with osmium tetroxide for electron and light microscopy. Light- dark-adapted eyes were also observed with hot water fixation and paraffin embedment.

Seed of Liatris aspera and Amorpha canescens were hand collected from the Mark Sand Prairie in Eastern Iowa during the fall of 1973 and 1974. There was no significant difference in the viability between one and two year old seed with both species. There was no significant difference in the total germination at 21 C for L. aspera and A. canescens. A. canescens required a significantly longer period of time for the two year old seed to germinate. Seeds of Lepidium lasiocarpum Nutt., Lepidium medium Greene var. medium, and Descurainea pinnata (Walt.) Britton ssp. ochroleuca (Woot.) Detling, native to the Chihuahuan Desert, were tested for their germination responses under conditions of constant and fluctuating temperatures, light and dark sensitivity, and different seed depths in soil. The effects of a three day drying period alternating with one day of moisture at field capacity was also investigated. All three species germinated optimally under fluctuating temperatures with low temperatures near 5-10°c and high temperatures near 20-25°C. L. lasiocarpum seeds responded better to fluctuating temperatures of 15°c magnitude than to fluctuations of …

The foraging activities of the Olive Warbler (Peucedramus taeniatus) and three other foliage-gleaning species were studied in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona during the summer of 1973. Grace's Warblers (Dendroica graciae), the most specialized of the four species, foraged most similarly to Peucedramus and is probably the latter is strongest potential competitor during the breeding season. The small size of D. graciae appeared to facilitate foraging in pine foliage and may be an important factor in promoting ecological segregation from the Olive Warbler. Audubon's Warblers (D. coronata) and Pygmy Nuthatches (Sitta pygmaea) were more generalized in their feeding activities …

Melatonin functions in the control of melanophore pigmentation of amphibians but its role in higher vertebrates is ill-defined. In mammals melatonin is produced within the pineal gland, where its formation is light dependent. This study consisted of three experiments: (i) a biological assay of commercial preparations of melatonin; (ii) response of hibernating ground squirrels exposed to cold and melatonin; (iii) response of isolated hearts to melatonin. Commercial preparations of melatonin were compared for their biological effectiveness by measuring the inhibition of compensatory ovarian hypertrophy in laboratory mice. Using the Sabin-Feldman Dye Test, sera from wild and domestic animals in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines were tested for the prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii. The incidence of Toxoplasma in all animals from these areas was: Arizona (19.6%, 11 of 56), Colorado (28.6%, 2 of 7), Montana (41.7%, 73 of 175), New Mexico (31.3%, 178 of 569), Peru (0%, 0 of 3), and the Philip­pines (33.8%, 48 of 142). The overall prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma was 32.7% (312 of 952).

"Null" mutations previously isolated at the αGpdh-1 locus of Drosophila melanogaster, because of disruption of the energy-producing α-glycerophosphate cycle, severely restrict the flight ability and relative viability of affected individuals. Two "null" alleles, αGpdh-1^BO-1-4, and αGpdh-1^BO-1-5, when made hemizygous with a deficiency of the αGpdh-1 locus,Df(2L)GdhA, were rendered homozygous by recombination with and selective elimination of the Df(2L)GdhA chromosome. Ninety-day experiments were initiated in January (Expt. 1), June (Expt. 2), and October (Expt. 3) 1972, to characterize molting patterns of Orconectes immunis (Hagen) at three different temperatures (20 C, 24 C, and 28 C) and three different photoperiods (6 L, 15 L, and continuous light). For each experiment 144 animals were collected from the seasonally predominate size class of that period. Light intensity was regulated to 15 foot candles + 10. Experimental conditions were arranged in a 3 x 3 design for statistical analysis using a completely randomized design with factorial arrangement of treatments.
