There was, however, one festival, which clearly and definitely symbolized the Messiah and his work. This was the Day of Atonement. It fore-shadowed the Messiah in many ways, but especially in his office as high-priest, his mediation and atonement by sacrifice. For this reason the Day of Atonement has a greater significance for us than the other festivals of the Old Testament. It has direct prophecies of the Christ who atoned for us.

In reading the Epistle to the Ephesians one is impressed by its peculiar loftiness and its grandeur in style. Scholars quite generally have accepted it as one of the sublimest and most profound of all the New Testament writings. Dr Salmond says: "In the judgment of many who are well entitled to deliver an opinion, it is the grandest of all the Pauline letters" (l). And Hayes remarks: "This epistle is a work of art. Its sublimity of thought is matched by its beauty of expression" (2). Strong calls this Epistle "the greatest production of inspiration" and adds, "the apostle …

As one peers across the vistas of the past two types of holy men stand out with striking prominence and significance. The advance of religious thought and life has largely been due to the activities and contributions of these two, the priest and the prophet.

It has been the purpose of this research to seek to discover the particular functions of each of these, to show their correlation in producing religious advance, and to make certain suggestions as to how the values each has to contribute to the program of the modern Christian church may be more adequately realized.
