Lesson Plan: Sr. Levadura (Mr. Yeast), Kali Elise Rye
World Languages and Cultures
This project addresses critical microbiology misconceptions concerning microbes and fermentation. Alongside Nuestra Ciencia’s lesson development team, this activity was researched and tested to demonstrate ideal fermentation conditions for yeast. In addition to the hands-on experiment, this project also required an interactive worksheet to be completed alongside the activity. With feedback from undergraduate students, researchers, and professors, the content was shaped to create an engaging, easily comprehensible activity that introduces microbiological concepts to students. As it has progressed, the Sr. Levadura (Mr. Yeast) activity has been implemented in two quarters of SCM 302 (Learn by Doing Lab) where over 400 elementary …

World Languages and Cultures
This project examines how Cuban immigrants, particularly those who fled the Fidel Castro regime, developed political perspectives after migrating to the United States. By focusing on Cuban immigrant communities, this project seeks to understand how experiences under a communist government and migration have shaped political beliefs. Within the United States, Cuban-Americans have become one of the most politically active Latino communities. As a Spanish and Political Science double major with Cuban family ties, this project represents both my academic interests and my own family experiences. Growing up, I listened to political conversations at family gatherings that seemed to consume the …
Black Language Matters: Capitalizing On Black English For Educational Success Through Linguistic And Cultural Competence Training, Fritz Lauriston
Black Language Matters: Capitalizing On Black English For Educational Success Through Linguistic And Cultural Competence Training, Fritz Lauriston
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
This dissertation explores the impact of culturally responsive professional development on K–12 educators’ perceptions and understanding of Black English, also known as African American Vernacular English (AAVE). The study responds to the longstanding marginalization of Black English in educational environments and its implications for academic equity, cultural identity, and student performance—particularly among African American learners. The central intervention, titled “Do You Understand Me? Linguistic and Cultural Competence Black English Professional Development,” was designed to increase teachers’ linguistic awareness, dismantle deficit perspectives, and promote inclusive instructional practices that validate students’ home language.
Using a mixed-method design, 59 certified educators participated in …

A History Of The Underground Comix Scene: The Seriousness Of An Unserious Genre, Harris Darcie Shugart
A History Of The Underground Comix Scene: The Seriousness Of An Unserious Genre, Harris Darcie Shugart
Master's Theses
The Underground Comix Scene of the 1960s and 1970s was born out of an age of censorship. The Comics Code Authority, a regulatory body created by the Comics Magazine Association of America in 1954, established guidelines requiring publishing houses to self-regulate following a recommendation from the United States Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency in 1953. Comix with an X, for their X-rated nature, represent an emerging counter-culture in the latter half of the 1960s and the 1970s, with an epicenter of San Francisco. These comix and their artists were not interested in obtaining the looming ‘Seal of Approval’ from the …
There Be A Dragon, Audreanna Elliott
There Be A Dragon, Audreanna Elliott
ETDs from 2020-2029
There Be a Dragon is set in a roughly medieval era world named Aleovion. Evren is the protagonist of the story, a young woman freshly seventeen on the cusp of what should be amazing things. She’s in her last year of schooling and will be on her way to escaping the misery her school has brought her, and on top of that, this is the year she should finally ‘manifest’. Evren’s a part of a sect of beings in this world called ‘Embodied’, people whose ancestry is touched by a mystical creature. This allows them to act as conduits for …

Ra Hub: Streamlining Resident Advisor Workflows Through A Mobile App, Samantha Danahe Gonzalez
Graphic Communication
This project explores the need to improve the workflow experience for Residential Advisors (RAs), specifically focusing on polychat logging and event planning workflows that currently rely on multiple disconnected software platforms. This fragmented system creates confusion and makes it difficult to complete responsibilities efficiently and accurately. Survey findings revealed frustrations with tracking tasks, managing workflows, and navigating between systems. In response, this project proposes a centralized workflow system designed to create a more organized, accessible, and userfriendly experience for RAs.

Rethinking Pakistan Studies: The Grounds Of Regional Knowledge After South Asia, Zoya Sameen
Rethinking Pakistan Studies: The Grounds Of Regional Knowledge After South Asia, Zoya Sameen
FAS Pakistan
This article rethinks Pakistan Studies as both a pedagogical project and a field of knowledge by examining the limits of history as a tool of legitimation. It argues that in the public sphere, history often serves to authorize the present, and shows how Pakistan Studies has historically operated within this framework. At the same time, the article suggests that this condition opens up another possibility: to understand history not as passive inheritance but as an active demand upon the present. Seen in this light, Pakistan Studies emerges not as a stable body of knowledge but as a series of shifting …

Letter From The Chairman, Simon Niemtschk
Letter From The Chairman, Simon Niemtschk
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
Grapho’s theme this year, “One Body in Christ”, encourages us to meditate on the ways our faith unites. By our Lord’s sacrifice, all believers are bound together with the resurrected body of Christ. Inspired by the great love God shared with the church as seen in Paul’s letters (Romans 12:4-5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13), we are freed from sin, death and the power of the devil, and empowered to a life together. Our theme this year invites Christians to consider how our unity is found scripturally, sacramentally, and liturgically.
The Church Year: A Unifying Story For Christ’S Body, Travis Galle
The Church Year: A Unifying Story For Christ’S Body, Travis Galle
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
Our postmodern world makes much of the diverse range of “human experiences” that subjectively shape the masses. Consequently, the contemporary task of the Church is to discern how best to comprehend and apply her proclamation to these varying experiences. Consider the experience of time. Human experience of time is something that is ostensibly common to all, yet cultural customs shape its perception. Some societies construct their calendars based on the cycles of the moon, others on the sun (such as the modern western calendar). Seasonal variations also universally impact all cultures, but to different degrees based on their respective climates. …

Liturgical Renewal And Mcdonaldization, Daniel Johnson
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
What is McDonaldization? Imagine with me that it is the 1950s, and you are going on a road trip down Route 66. You get hungry, so you decide to stop for food. You pull off the side of the road and park in front of a classic American diner to get yourself a burger and fries.
Can Chinatown Speak? Mapping Hauntings, Dispossessions, And Diasporic Lifeworlds In Boston’S Chinatown, Lin Lin
Geography Undergraduate Senior Theses
Boston's Chinatown has persisted despite highway construction, urban renewal, and institutional expansion that destroyed much of the neighborhood. This thesis asks how residents have shaped and inhabited that space and whose contributions have been forgotten in the process. Through entangling frameworks from Geography and Asian American Studies, the thesis approaches Boston's Chinatown through walking, archiving, and counter-mapping. The first chapter reads the streets as a layered record of historical ruptures, which leads to a dichotomy of presence and absence. The second chapter then examines the archives of the 1993 Parcel C struggle. It creates an original counter-archive, titled the "Collection …

Preparing An Annotated Bibliography For A Criminal Justice Class, Fabiola Ceballos-Durham
Open Educational Resources
This assignment introduces students to the research process in criminal justice by requiring them to locate, evaluate, and annotate scholarly and credible sources related to their assigned topic. Through the use of library databases, web evaluation techniques, and APA citation style, students develop information literacy skills while identifying key findings, gaps, and areas of interest within the existing literature. The completed annotated bibliography serves as a foundation for the Final Term Research Project by helping students refine a research focus and begin building a reference base for future assignments.

Language Arts Journal of Michigan
This article explores the integration of resistance narratives and cultural identity into English literature curricula in multilingual classrooms, highlighting its potential to promote liberation pedagogy. Drawing on the principles of critical pedagogy, it argues that literature can act as a transformative tool to combat oppression, foster critical thinking, and enhance inclusivity. The study employs a qualitative approach, analyzing case studies, classroom practices, and curriculum frameworks to identify effective strategies for teaching literature in linguistically and culturally diverse settings. Key strategies include selecting texts that reflect themes of social justice and resilience, incorporating students' native languages to bridge comprehension gaps, and …

Gathering Knowledge, Sustaining Science: The Female Forager And American Mushroom Culture, 1880–1930, Madeline S. Dede-Panken
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Unearthing origins of modern mycophilia, this dissertation explores the mushroom mania which reverberated through American society at the turn of the twentieth century, empowering Anglo-American women in new ways. America’s largely forgotten first mushroom fad illuminates gendered negotiations of foraging culture and public science. Beginning in the 1880s, a remarkable cohort of women helped turn mushrooms from shunned, mysterious organisms into wholesome delicacies for culinary and intellectual enrichment. Female enthusiasts fostered a vibrant mushroom culture and nationwide network of mycophiles. Culinary applications and poisoning fears legitimized women’s presence in scientific endeavors, positioning mycology as vital female knowledge for public safety …
Policing Sex Trafficking: 'They’Re Never Taught, You Know', Anila S. Duro
Policing Sex Trafficking: 'They’Re Never Taught, You Know', Anila S. Duro
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Research shows that victims of sex trafficking are most likely to first come in contact with the police (Baldwin et al, 2011; Twigg, 2017) and at times police have not been able to categorize cases of prostitution as trafficking even when trafficking elements were very clear (Dank et al, 2017; Dempsey, 2017; Farrell & Cronin, 2015). Despite the legal definition of trafficking, the terms prostitution, sex work, and sex trafficking are sometimes used interchangeably by law enforcement, whereas at other times, these words refer to different sets of circumstances and have different criminalization outcomes. Research in this area is limited …
Vestigial Choreographies: Climate Consciousness In The Long Nineteenth Century, Alexandra A. Rego
Vestigial Choreographies: Climate Consciousness In The Long Nineteenth Century, Alexandra A. Rego
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The aims of this project are twofold: (a) to develop a method of theoretical analysis and (b) to put this method into pointed use. In service of (a), I propose a method of choreographic analysis. This method operates relationally, highlighting the production of movement and stillness among and between bodies, objects, and encounters. Choreographic analysis draws from methods typically sequestered to dance studies. Towards aim (b), this project demonstrates the relevance and breadth of choreographic analysis by connecting it to ecocriticism. Throughout this project, I apply choreographic analysis to a diverse set of case studies. I use choreographic analysis to …
The Desire Of Strict Souls: The Poetry, Criticism, And Letters Of Paul Valéry And Wallace Stevens, Michael Healy
The Desire Of Strict Souls: The Poetry, Criticism, And Letters Of Paul Valéry And Wallace Stevens, Michael Healy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation compares the poetic, critical, and epistolary oeuvres of Paul Valéry and Wallace Stevens and the influence of the former on the latter. Valéry famously advocated for the pursuit of “poésie pure” (“pure poetry”) and influenced Stevens especially in this way, though both of them concluded it was not achievable. I establish an approximation of a critical framework based on the work of the following critics and scholars: Wendy Lesser, Wendy Steiner, Anthony Cuda, Michael Clune, Paul Bové, and Liesl Olson. Harold Bloom’s passionate advocacy and deep, sustained engagement with Stevens and his work strongly influenced my choice to …
Roe V. Wade With Audre And Nikki: Their Social And Political Impacts Following The Landmark Decision, Sharon L. Eaddy
Roe V. Wade With Audre And Nikki: Their Social And Political Impacts Following The Landmark Decision, Sharon L. Eaddy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis analyzes how the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade shaped public understandings of reproductive rights and how those understandings diverged across race, gender, class, and sexuality. Using a qualitative, interdisciplinary design, the study pairs close textual analysis of Nikki Giovanni’s and Audre Lorde’s poems and essays with socio-legal and historical context on constitutional privacy doctrine, the Ninth and Fourteenth Amendments, and the Reconstruction legacy of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. The central research question is: what kinds of reproductive “freedom” become legible through Roe’s rights-based framing, and what forms of constraint remain visible when Black …

Materializing The Interface: Personal Data Feeds Generative Art, Erin Livingston
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Materializing the Interface: Personal Data Feeds Generative Art is a data-studio capstone project that reconstructs elements of desktop and mobile interfaces as handmade mixed-media artifacts, then digitizes them as an interactive website where generative text and images are fed by personal data flows. Twenty-one paper collage windows — built from cardstock, risograph-printed paper, and mixed media — were photographed, digitized, and activated using code to become the interactive surface of a desktop view driven by browser history. A corresponding mobile view renders a corpus of 500 Instagram advertisement screenshots through a risograph print aesthetic, fed by a hand-tagged emotion and …
Aphrodite In Movement And Miniature: Knidian Statuettes Of The Ancient And Modern, Jacqueline M. Lewis
Aphrodite In Movement And Miniature: Knidian Statuettes Of The Ancient And Modern, Jacqueline M. Lewis
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis examines Hellenistic statuettes of the Knidian Aphrodite as independent works of art with distinct ancient contexts and modern collecting histories. Drawing on archaeological evidence from Delos, archival and public records from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and a comparative framework that places Hellenistic and modern collecting cultures in dialogue, this thesis aims to present the Knidia within the dynamic, interactive history of statuettes. Evaluated on its own terms rather than in relation to a lost original, Knidian Aphrodite statuettes illuminate both the richness of Hellenistic domestic religious life and …

“A Chill Wind Sweeps The High Places”: Audre Lorde’S And June Jordan’S Black Feminist Pedagogies For Remaking Higher Education, Maddie Albanese
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this paper, I center the University as one site for radical pedagogy towards social justice. This paper examines texts written on anti-racist, anti-sexist educational movements within the City University of New York, as well as archival materials from CUNY professors on the topic of radical, social justice-oriented learning. Conor Tomás Reed’s 2023 book New York Liberation School is one recent text on how CUNY activists dismantled the distinction between the University and its surrounding community, inextricably linking academic work with social-political activism. I take his extensive history of CUNY in tandem with various pedagogies developed by CUNY feminist educators …
An Absolute Manner Of Seeing: Flaubert, 1848, And The Development Of Modernist Style, Nicholas Olson
An Absolute Manner Of Seeing: Flaubert, 1848, And The Development Of Modernist Style, Nicholas Olson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines Gustave Flaubert’s Sentimental Education as a key work in the emergence of literary Modernism from the tradition of Realism. I begin by exploring the intellectual background of Realism in the works of Honoré de Balzac and the ties between this aesthetic theory and the theory of representative government: here I discuss the work of François Guizot, Friedrich Schiller, Friedrich Schlegel, J.W. Goethe, and Walter Scott as well as later thinkers like György Lukács, Pierre Bourdieu, Jürgen Habermas, and Jacques Rancière. From this, I demonstrate a commonly held theory of the social as a discreet totality, which makes …
Le Féminin-Fantastique: Entre Construction Symbolique Et Figuration De L’Altérité. Étude Des Figures Féminines Surnaturelles Dans La Littérature Fantastique Française Du Xixe Siècle, Ivana Prelevic
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the féminin-fantastique in nineteenth-century French literature, arguing that supernatural female figures—vampires, animated objects, and revenantes—form a symbolic system through which the century negotiates anxieties surrounding sexuality, materiality, subjectivity, capitalism, mortality, and historical memory. Drawing on theoretical frameworks including Julia Kristeva’s concept of abjection, Barbara Creed’s monstrous-feminine, Marxist analyses of commodity fetishism, Freudian mourning, Derridean hauntology, and Georges Bataille’s theory of eroticism, the study analyzes works by Gautier, Féval, Mérimée, Maupassant, Villiers de l’Isle-Adam, and Nodier. Through three thematic axes—the female vampire, the animation of feminine objects, and the female revenant—the dissertation demonstrates how the supernatural feminine destabilizes …
Reimagining Puerto Rican Sonic Identity: Musical Style And Creation After Hurricane María., Gabriel E. Bouche Caro
Reimagining Puerto Rican Sonic Identity: Musical Style And Creation After Hurricane María., Gabriel E. Bouche Caro
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the manifestation of Puertorriqueñidad (Puerto Rican identity) in concert music composed after Hurricane María (2017), a catastrophe that catalyzed a profound shift in Puerto Rico's cultural consciousness. Focusing on four composers whose early careers were shaped by this period—Johanny Navarro, John Rivera Pico, Iván E. Rodríguez, and Christian Quiñones—the study combines close readings of scores and recordings with extensive original interviews to understand how musical identity is constructed in the wake of collective trauma. The analysis reveals that while the composers share a generational bond, their aesthetic practices are strikingly diverse: Navarro preserves Afro-Caribbean rhythmic structures, Rivera …
Que Tus Ojos No Se Cansen De Brillar, Gabriel E. Bouche Caro
Que Tus Ojos No Se Cansen De Brillar, Gabriel E. Bouche Caro
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Que tus ojos no se cansen de brillar is a nine-song song cycle for soprano, saxophone, clarinet, percussion, electric guitar, violin, viola, and cello. Setting texts by Giannina Braschi alongside selected poems by Ángela María Dávila, Julia de Burgos, and Pedro Pietri, the work explores Puertorriqueñidad through musical hybridity. Drawing on Puerto Rican musical traditions and the island’s diasporic experience as core structural elements, the cycle constantly shifts styles, weaving together lyrical, experimental, and vernacular elements to reflect the resilience, fragmentation, and diversity of Puerto Rican identity across its literary, musical and experiential voices.
