Dr. Parks Coble, Jr. was awarded the ORCA in 2005. He was born in Waterloo, South Carolina in 1946 but he grew up in Columbia. He earned his bachelor’s in history at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Next, he traveled 740 miles northwest to earn his doctorate at the University of Illinois in Champaign. In 1976, he became an assistant professor of history at the University of Nebraska, where he quickly rose through the ranks. Birch aims to remain neutral about whether life is necessary for sentience. We argue that life can be given a role while maintaining neutrality. Markers of sentience have been identified in living systems, where some contribute to the system's self-maintenance. When such a marker is reproduced in an artificial system that is not self-maintaining it is not clear that it is as reliable as in living systems.

Picture books serve as a foundational medium in early childhood education, utilizing interrelated visual and verbal elements to foster linguistic, cognitive, and social development. Despite their pedagogical utility, certain literary works inadvertently perpetuate traditional gender roles, constraining children's conceptualizations of identity. This study evaluates gender representation within eleven selected titles of The Berenstain Bears series. Employing a qualitative multimodal content analysis, the study integrates Butler's gender performativity framework (1990), Callow's multimodal narrative approach (2020), and Adam and Harper's evaluative criteria (2021) to examine how domestic, social, and recreational roles are constructed. Fundamental Qur'anic themes, including monotheism (tawhid), revelation and prophethood, the afterlife, justice, and knowledge, serve as the primary source of inspiration for the creation of contemporary Islamic calligraphic paintings. The rapid development of modernization and secularization has reduced the representation of Qur'anic spiritual values in contemporary society, creating the need for a visual medium capable of communicating these values through symbolic, reflective, and aesthetic expressions. This study examines the strategies employed by Mekkas Laras Art Studio to preserve karawitan music in Pamekasan Regency and identifies the challenges and adaptive responses involved. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving the studio's management, instructors, and participants. Data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal three interrelated processes of karawitan preservation: perception, appreciation, and creation. Perception introduces participants to karawitan and facilitates enculturation through direct engagement; appreciation fosters recognition of its cultural values and functions; and creation provides space for innovation and …

This study explores the use of Miraa, an AI-based transcription application, in Mandarin listening instruction and students’ responses to its use in a Chinese Comprehensive 2 course. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed involving 21 students from the Mandarin Language Education Program at Universitas Negeri Malang. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with 10 purposively selected students, documentation, and exercise scores as supporting data. Bullying in educational settings is a social issue that not only affects victims but also generates diverse public responses on social media. This study examines the linguistic forms and pragmatic functions used by netizens in responding to a bullying case at MTs Al Khairaat Sindue through comments on the TikTok account @Inews.com. A descriptive qualitative approach employing qualitative content analysis was used. The data comprised 12 high-engagement comments purposively selected from approximately 23,000 comments on the relevant post. Family-themed films can represent different parenting styles through communication, behavior, and parent–child relationships. This study aims to analyze the representation of parenting styles in the film Home Sweet Loan. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, using dialogue, characters’ actions and expressions, and contextual elements of parent–child interactions as data. The data were collected through repeated viewing and systematic note-taking and were subsequently coded and deductively categorized according to authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful parenting characteristics. The findings reveal three predominant parenting tendencies. Cover artwork in digital music functions not only as a visual identity but also as a representational medium that constructs meaning through symbols, colors, and composition. This study examines the visual representation of Paroots’ “Revolusi Mental” cover artwork, created by Garis Edelweiss, using Roland Barthes’ semiotics and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. This dissertation argues that Gloria Steinem became one of the most visible feminists of her generation because two political inheritances — postcolonial India and the Cold War liberal United States — converged in a single career. In 1957 and 1958, on a Chester Bowles Asian Fellowship, Steinem spent eighteen months in India, where she moved from elite intellectual circles in Delhi to Gandhian and Sarvodaya peace work in the villages of Ramnad. Media serves as a powerful medium for shaping cultural norms and self-perception. Despite increasing visibility in Philippine media, LGBTQ+ representation remains dominated by metropolitan-centric narratives and reductive tropes that overlook the nuanced realities of provincial queer life. The study explored how BEKIZINE, a community-centered zine created by and for LGBTQ+ individuals aged 18–30 in Cavite, can serve as alternative media for self-expression, community building, and historical preservation. This is a common challenge for Filipino Bicol Language learners, especially those who grew up outside the region. The practice of anik-anik culture remains relevant and prominent among Filipinos, especially among Gen Z. Decorating, collecting, and preserving miscellaneous items as an extension of one’s identity and memory exemplifies the Filipino maximalist aesthetic. In context, Filipinos are naturally inclined to be maximalists, driven by the desire to connect and the tendency to fill empty spaces, hence the aesthetic of Filipino maximalism. This paper discusses the artistic representation of the muffling of women’s voices and the culture of silence through a theoretically auto-destructive method of artmaking—bleaching using mark-making on textile. Through studio art research, the reductive and erasing properties of bleaching agents are used by bleaching printed images of women in fabric to metaphorically represent and articulate the existence of silencing imposed upon women. Guided by the lens of feminism and Gustav Merger’s manifesto of auto-destructive art, this work presents the artistic images of 13 women across Philippine history—from the babaylans to Maria Ressa—on textile, imbued with bleaching effects.
