The French Colonial Mind, Volume 2, Martin Thomas
The French Colonial Mind, Volume 2, Martin Thomas
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
olence was prominent in France’s conquest of a colonial empire, and the use of force was integral to its control and regulation of colonial territories. What, if anything, made such violence distinctly colonial? And how did its practitioners justify or explain it? These are issues at the heart of The French Colonial Mind: Violence, Military Encounters, and Colonialism. The second of two linked volumes, this book brings together prominent scholars of French colonial history to explore the many ways in which brutality and killing became central to the French experience and management of empire. Sometimes concealed or denied, at …

Review Of War Party In Blue: Pawnee Scouts In The U.S. Army By Mark Van De Logt, Kevin Adams
Review Of War Party In Blue: Pawnee Scouts In The U.S. Army By Mark Van De Logt, Kevin Adams
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
There are many positive things to say about Mark van de Logt's study of Pawnee Indian scouts. The research, particularly in primary sources, is deep, while van de Logt's prose is so clean it practically sparkles. War Party in Blue is the result of great care taken by both author and press.
Van de Logt's intent, as expressed in his clear and concise introduction, is to revise traditional interpretations that attribute the scouts' success to Major Frank North's leadership. Given the contours of historical scholarship in the mid-twentieth century, as well as the voluminous accounts left us by Luther North, …

Review Of Sex, Murder, And The Unwritten Law: Courting Judicial Mayhem, Texas Style. By Bill Neal., Paul N. Spellman
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
"If, as has often been contended, truth is the first casualty of traditional warfare, then logic, it appears, is the first casualty of sexual warfare." And with that thematic statement in hand, author Bill Neal is off to the proverbial races with an often delightful, sometimes troubling, and generally entertaining legal discourse on the so-called "unwritten law": that a cuckolded husband or a woman wronged has the God-given right to avenge or be avenged, even to redress by murder. With a curiously dispassionate, or at least overly serious, foreword by Cal State-Fullerton professor Gordon Morris Bakken, Neal's tales of adultery, …

Review Of Wives And Husbands: Gender And Age In Southern Arapaho History. By Loretta Fowler., Kathleen S. Fine-Dare
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Wives and Husbands will likely become a classic of ethnographically informed historical anthropology. From the moment distinguished anthropologist Loretta Fowler's work opens with its account of Little Raven and Walking Backward-a brother and sister born in the early nineteenth century who lived to see great changes- to its final pages, which offer at least ten "new lines of research" that scholars might do well to follow to correct errors regarding everything from women's status under change to the "reidentification process" undergone by educated Arapahos returning to their communities, a wide variety of readers will find themselves engaged in a book …

The Morality Of Humanitarian Interventions, Per Bauhn
The Morality Of Humanitarian Interventions, Per Bauhn
International Dialogue
In this paper I develop an argument to the effect that humanitarian moral interventions, far from being inconsistent with the normative framework of just war, fit in very well with the justifying conditions of this framework. The argument develops by considering three objections against humanitarian military interventions, emanating from just war criteria. The criteria in question are just authority, just cause, and non-combatant immunity. It will be argued that while just authority logically depends on just cause and has no independent argumentative force of its own, the criterion of just cause should be understood to include a defence of human …
Fighting A War You've Already Lost: Zombies And Zombis In Firefly/Serenity And Dollhouse, Gerry Canavan
Fighting A War You've Already Lost: Zombies And Zombis In Firefly/Serenity And Dollhouse, Gerry Canavan
English Faculty Research and Publications
This article explores the use of zombie imagery in two sf narratives created by Joss Whedon: Firefly (US 2002–3), Serenity (US 2005) and Dollhouse (US 2009–10). The translation of the zombie from its traditional horror-movie context to the far-future space opera of Firefly/Serenity and the near-future cyberpunk of Dollhouse reveals the zombie's allegorisation of the consequences of biopolitical governmentality and neoliberal capitalism. In both series zombies function as a figure for both the dehumanisation caused by state and market forces and the possibility of Utopian resistance to these forces.

The Dangers Of Digital Imaging, Russel Laska
The Dangers Of Digital Imaging, Russel Laska
All Student Theses and Dissertations
In today's world, photography takes on a whole different meaning that it did 20-30 years ago. Whereas terms such as photograph and graphic used to have separate meanings that classified them from one another, these and many similar terms have been melded together to represent the same thing... a computer image. Due to the jump in technology over the past 10 years alone, digital cameras went from flashy novelties to a strong industry standard in photography, and swift computer alteration of photographs and images began with a very small amount of people to practically everyone who has a computer today. …
Treason And Betrayal In The Middle English Romances Of Sir Gawain, Gregory L. Laing
Treason And Betrayal In The Middle English Romances Of Sir Gawain, Gregory L. Laing
The Hilltop Review
This article explores the themes of treason and betrayal which are common motifs of medieval romances, specifically those featuring the Arthurian knight Sir Gawain. Because loyalty to one’s lord, nation, or family unit was critical for survival in the Middle Ages, the problem of treachery by close companions is often a recurring subject in romances from this period. Such themes revealed to their audience the fragility of these relationships and cautioned against overconfidence in the bonds of loyalty. Romances featuring Gawain, like the Middle English Awntyrs off Arthur and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, conclude with the young …
The Effects Of The Condemnation Of 1277, Jason Gooch
The Effects Of The Condemnation Of 1277, Jason Gooch
The Hilltop Review
There are three primary stances regarding the relationship between science and the church in the middle ages. Concerning the condemnation of 1277, Pierre Duhem argues that (A) 1277 marks “the birth of modern science.” Edward Grant and Richard Dales, among others, argue that (B) 1277 led to an “intellectual climate.” Conversely, a wide-ranging group of scholars beginning in the seventeenth century (including Condorcet, and Voltaire) have endorsed a “warfare thesis,” claiming that (C) the church is responsible for the “dismal state of medieval science.” I shall argue that A, B and C all prove to be inadequate. In the tradition …

This evening's program also celebrates the Holy Cross NROTC Unit's 70 years of unbroken service to the nation and Naval Department.
The Cultural Politics Of Wmd Terrorism In Post-Cold War America, Harold Williford
The Cultural Politics Of Wmd Terrorism In Post-Cold War America, Harold Williford
Re-visioning Terrorism
Terrorism’s definition is hotly debated and notoriously problematic. The resulting instability of counterterrorism and counterterrorist identity, however, is less often explored. This paper analyzes the prehistory of the War on Terror to explore how the meaning and associations attributed to terrorism by counterterrorists in the 1990s reflect the latter’s priorities, agenda, and anxieties. Prevalent ahistorical post-Cold War representations of terrorism involving weapons of mass destruction (WMD) as a “new” threat indicate that WMD-wielding terrorists functioned to justify the continued existence of the American national security state after the Soviet Union collapsed. Close readings of Rainbow Six, a Tom Clancy …
Fictions Of Counterinsurgency, Louise K. Barnett
Fictions Of Counterinsurgency, Louise K. Barnett
Re-visioning Terrorism
My essay examines the disconnect between theory and practice in the American response to terrorism, primarily by comparing the policies advocated in the revised U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual (2006) with actual military practice in Afghanistan and Iraq. I refer to the official policies as "fictions" because they cannot be put into practice in any meaningful way: they create the illusion that military initiatives can effectively combat terrorism when their usual result is to breed more terrorism.

Totalitarian Threats And Colonial Geography: The Politics Of Defining Terrorism In Beauvoir, Camus, And Dib, Araceli Hernandez-Laroche
Re-visioning Terrorism
Can terrorism be justified as a means for social justice? Can a so-called democratic state engaged in indiscriminate bombardments of civilian populations be held accountable for terrorist acts? How is political crime different from senseless murder? Can and should genocide be defined differently from a civil war operation? Who has the right to decide for the life or death of others?
This paper compares important representations in prose and theater of moral dilemmas that plagued war-torn Europe and France during the Spanish Civil War, World War II, and the Algerian War. I analyze the complexities and divergences of existential writers …
Terror In The Old French Crusade Cycle: From Splendid Cavalry To Cannibalism, Sarah-Grace Heller
Terror In The Old French Crusade Cycle: From Splendid Cavalry To Cannibalism, Sarah-Grace Heller
Re-visioning Terrorism
It is worth examining memories of the crusading experience in discussions of terrorism in history as well as the current political situation. The main piece of propaganda that linked Osama Bin-Laden to the 9/11 attacks, the “World Islamic Front Statement urging Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders,” evoked a Muslim memory of the crusades largely forgotten in the West. The works of the Old French Crusade Cycle are unique texts remembering and fantasizing the encounter with Muslims and other “others” in the Mediterranean. Composed by Graindor de Douai between 1190 and 1212, they recounted the First Crusade (1095-1099) in the …
From Hydra To Al-Qaeda: Depictions Of Terrorism In Comic Books, Cord Scott
From Hydra To Al-Qaeda: Depictions Of Terrorism In Comic Books, Cord Scott
Re-visioning Terrorism
Comic books have often reflected the world at the time of publication. Terrorism became a prominent aspect of several comic storylines after 9/11, but the concept of terrorist groups in comic books is far more common than one might think. This paper looks at how terrorist groups have been used in US comic books, how events in comics have later come true, and how depictions of terrorists have changed in both positive and negative aspects.

Jihadis And The Use Of The Terms Terrorism And Terrorist, Aaron Zelin
Re-visioning Terrorism
Previous studies on the usage of the terms terror, terrorist, and terrorism have taken a Western perspective on how these terms should be defined and then deployed, but the viewpoint of the “terrorist” (in this case jihadis) has yet to be examined. This study analyzes how jihadis understand these terms and critically assesses their interpretation based on classical Islamic doctrine. The basis and “proof” for jihadis’ legitimization of using terror is based upon the Qur’anic verse 8:60, but when taken into context and traditional understanding, jihadis miss the mark. Yet, at the same time, when exploring the linguistic root for …
Obstetrical Forceps: History, Mystery, And Morality, Ronald L. Young
Obstetrical Forceps: History, Mystery, And Morality, Ronald L. Young
Houston History of Medicine Lectures (2006-2012)
The history of obstetrical forceps has almost always been one cloaked in controversy after a long history of being shrouded in mystery. Forceps have a long history and have evolved from facilitating the delivery of dead fetuses to aiding in the delivery and survival of live babies. In the middle of all of this arises the story of the Chamberlain family whose contribution was enormous but whose behaviors pushed at the envelope of (at least) our present-day concepts of medical ethics. This lecture traces an interesting story that spans a millennium.
The Mediatization Of War: A Comparison Of The American And German Media Coverage Of The Vietnam And Iraq Wars, Gerd Horten
The Mediatization Of War: A Comparison Of The American And German Media Coverage Of The Vietnam And Iraq Wars, Gerd Horten
CUP Faculty Research
The last fifty years have seen the further expansion of the role of media during times of war. Although no longer dominated by large-scale propaganda agencies as during the two world wars, the media nevertheless have become ever more integral to the planning and conduct of wars. This article applies the concept of mediatization in an attempt to capture the ever-increasing role of the media during war times as part of an ongoing and accelerating historical process. It uses a comparative analysis to highlight the commonalities of this process as well as to emphasize national particularities. The article argues that …
