Paulus Potter’S Punishment Of A Hunter: A Study In Cultural Shifts, Moderation And Class, Taylor Brown

Theses

This paper proposes a new reading of the painting Punishment of a Hunter (1647-1652) by Dutch painter Paulus Potter through the lens of its unique position in seventeenth-century Dutch art with regards to allegory, human and animal caricature, human nature, class, and the influence of economic growth and complexity of class in Amsterdam. The painting consists of fourteen individual vignettes on one panel of wood. Utilizing socio-economic, political, historical and formal analysis, this thesis proposes a reading of the painting. A total of five chapters, each addressing key themes of the painting, will contribute to my main thesis asserting that …

“Genocide Of The Soviet People”: Putin’S Russia Waging Lawfare By Means Of History, 2018–2023, Anton Weiss-Wendt

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This article exposes the political underpinnings of the term “genocide of the Soviet people,” introduced and actively promoted in Russia since 2019. By reclassifying mass crimes committed by the Nazis and their accomplices against the civilian population—specifically Slavic—as genocide, Russian courts effectively engage in adjudication of the history of the Second World War. In the process, genocide trials, ongoing in twenty-five Russian provinces and five occupied Ukrainian territories, present no new evidence or issue new indictments, thus fulfilling none of the objectives of a standard criminal investigation. The wording of the verdicts, and a comprehensive political project put in place …

By utilizing the writings of the Byzantine historian Procopius, a contemporary of Justinian, as well as the writings of modern historians, the goal of the paper is to show the extent to which Justinian's influence is felt throughout the Early Middle Ages, defined in this essay as the period from 467 to 1100.

The True And Only Technic: Technological Ubiquity And Its Critics, Heretics, And Zealots, Hampton A. Dodd

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Against technological ubiquity, the philosopher, the ecologist, the theologian, the psychologist, the radical, the reactionary, and the poet have each responded. This analysis seeks to explicate the nature of such responses, as well as to explore their contemporary form and elucidate what those presently publishing might offer as programs toward the future. In order to do this, what follows is broken up into a series of sections, each focused on what I have perceived to be the foremost themes present throughout technological critique: becoming, freedom, identity, faith, space, time, and progress. Prior to such thematic excavations, this analysis offers a …

Visualizing Ancient Empire In Tudor England: Imperial Monarchy, Reformation, And The Antique Soldier In The Title Page To Richard Grafton’S Large Chronicle (1569), Peter Nicholas Otis

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis analyzes the iconography and visual sources of the title page to the first volume of A chronicle at large and meere history of the affayres of Englande (1569) by the Tudor author Richard Grafton. Representing the visual synthesis of several distinct but interrelated currents that developed in the preceding century, the title page to the Large Chronicle offers a rare glimpse into a transitional moment in the middle Tudor perception and visual representation of the British past. These currents include imperializing royal iconography, with origins in antecedent representations in the late fifteenth century; the entry of the ‘classicizing’ …

A Personal And Multicultural Journey Through The World Of Games (With A Little Math) Or Book Review: Around The World In Eighty Games, By Marcus Du Sautoy, Karl-Dieter Crisman Jan 2024

A Personal And Multicultural Journey Through The World Of Games (With A Little Math) Or Book Review: Around The World In Eighty Games, By Marcus Du Sautoy, Karl-Dieter Crisman

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Author and number theorist Marcus Du Sautoy has written a book about games, including a light dose of mathematics. In it, he journeys through far more than (his choice of) eighty of “the world’s greatest games”, laying out a charming voyage through many lands. Despite some reservations, this reviewer finds that Around the World in Eighty Games is well-written and quite fascinating, largely due to its idiosyncratic, personal nature.

Sharing Four Biscuits Between Three People: An Illustrative Example Of How Mathematics Is Intertwined With Human Values, Lovisa Sumpter, David Sumpter Jan 2024

Sharing Four Biscuits Between Three People: An Illustrative Example Of How Mathematics Is Intertwined With Human Values, Lovisa Sumpter, David Sumpter

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Despite convincing arguments by mathematicians, philosophers, sociologists and machine learning practitioners to the contrary, there remains a widespread notion amongst many members of the general public (and some practitioners) that mathematics is neutral, that it is free from human values. One reason why this notion persists is that we lack clear-cut examples that demonstrate how mathematics and values are intertwined. In this paper, we offer one such example. In particular, we show that when sharing four biscuits between three people, several possible mathematical and ethical frameworks can be used. We demonstrate that different solutions—hiding one biscuit, arbitrarily sharing the extra …

The Concept Of The Devarāja In Leadership At The Royal Palace Of Yogyakarta, Ghilman Assilmi Jan 2024

The Concept Of The Devarāja In Leadership At The Royal Palace Of Yogyakarta, Ghilman Assilmi

International Review of Humanities Studies

The Yogyakarta Palace is one of the Islamic sultanates that still exists in Indonesia. Even though the Yogyakarta Palace has an Islamic style and has been influenced by modernization which has penetrated aspects of state and society, the embodiment of the God-King concept from ancient Hindu eras remains embedded in the power of the king, state life, and the obedience of the surrounding community to the palace system. This paper has a problem regarding how to apply the concept of politics and power in the Yogyakarta Palace. A historical approach is used to reveal the meaning of the palace in …

Fighting The Gravity: Settler Colonial Interventions In Land Based Memory, Ezekiel Shawn Choffel Jan 2024

Fighting The Gravity: Settler Colonial Interventions In Land Based Memory, Ezekiel Shawn Choffel

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation establishes a settler-colonial ontological frame work through the melding of Western storytelling genre conventions with Indigenous storytelling methods. Through a series of interconnected non-fiction stories, this framework demonstrates how to directly engage with a settler-colonial subject position by building a method of constellation of personal experience in order to understand options beyond capitalism and settler-colonial complacency. This method is then applied to two geographic locations, the Standing Rock Reservation and Flint, MI. The author shares connections and builds stories through connections with the landscape and specific timeframes (the Water Protectors movement at Standing Rock and the Flint Water …

Heroes, Victims, And Future Citizens: Representations Of French Children During World War I, Megan R. Outtrim Jan 2024

Heroes, Victims, And Future Citizens: Representations Of French Children During World War I, Megan R. Outtrim

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

The effects of total war society in France during WWI dramatically altered the daily lives of both adults and children, witnessing increasing levels of patriotic rhetoric, wartime propaganda, and anti-German sentiment. Children were often made the focal point of this propaganda, as they represented the future of the nation. As such, three specific representations of children emerge from WWI propaganda in France: the heroic child, the victimized child, and the malleable future citizen. Some of these representations were depicted in propaganda meant for children specifically, while others were depicted in propaganda meant to mobilize adults in the name of children. …

It will also critique Eurocentric trauma theory for diminishing the South Asian perspectives of trauma (incidents) from the main discourse of trauma theory. In addition, the paper will explore the detrimental impacts of war and conflict as experienced by Nepalese cops and civilians together, and its long-lasting imprint on their psyche as manifested in different forms of trauma in the text. The dissemination of the 'inarticulable trauma' concept into something …

Assessing Information Security Practices In Omani Ministries: Challenges And Pathways To International Standards Compliance, Said Albarami, Khalfan Zahran Al-Hijji, Raja Waseem Anwar

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

Digital transformation in Oman has amplified the risk of cyberattacks, as evidenced by millions of attacks targeting government websites and critical infrastructures. However, Oman’s current cy-bersecurity preparedness, particularly in policy development, is inadequate, as indicated by its moderate ranking in the National Cyber Security Index and score of 0% in cybersecurity policy development. Furthermore, prior research has not extensively covered the implementation of information security standards within Omani ministries. This study addresses this critical gap by evaluating the current state of information security policy implementation across 18 Omani min-istries. A survey of 36 IT and security managers assessed current policies …

Colliding Worlds: Visual Culture In France And Colonial Algeria (1918-1962), Lacy Murphy Jan 2024

Colliding Worlds: Visual Culture In France And Colonial Algeria (1918-1962), Lacy Murphy

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The decline of French colonialism in Algeria and the Algerian War lay at the fault line of several tectonic forces. World War I, World War II, and the Cold War challenged France’s global stature, destabilized the colonial apparatus, and fostered unprecedented intercolonial intellectual exchange. These events provided the global context for Algeria’s national revolution, a prolonged period of conflict that was all in one a civil war that redefined Algerian identity, a political and military scandal that led to the downfall of the French Fourth Republic in 1958, influenced Cold War politics, and continues to shape national identity in both …

Is Islam A Religion Of Peace?, Robert Greer Jan 2024

Is Islam A Religion Of Peace?, Robert Greer

Liberty Theological Review

One of the most troubling and controversial doctrines in Islam is that of jihad. Yet, in the West its meaning is unclear. Does it mean the struggle of the human soul to develop a wholesome spirituality, or is it more a struggle that results in terrorist attacks upon all who oppose Islam? Many politicians and academics in the West, along with many journalists and opinion-makers in the mainstream media insist that Islam, rightly understood, is a religion of peace. That means that Islamic jihadists who engage in wanton terrorism upon all who stand in their way are an aberration. They …
