The Life And Contributions Of Samuel Harrison Smith, Dean Jarman Jan 1961

The Life And Contributions Of Samuel Harrison Smith, Dean Jarman

Theses and Dissertations

Samuel H. Smith lived at a period of time when American society was undergoing great change in its economic, religious, and social institutions. Increased transportation facilities provided new opportunities for the common man. There was increased mobility on the part of Americans and the West offered many new opportunities. A renewed interest in religion and the repudiation of existing Christian institutions were characteristic of that period of time.

Faith Triumphant-Echoes From The Epistle To The Hebrews, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

Who wrote the Epistle to the Hebrews? No one knows. But every reader of this epistle does know that its author was a man of faith. The term "faith" appears some 30 times in the epistle. Together with related terms, it constitutes one of the chief motifs in the epistle. On the basis of this epistle, we shall examine I. The Nature of Faith, and II. The Triumph of Faith.

The International Student-Test Of A Living Church, William J. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

In a world in which the process of homogenization is being stepped up constantly, it is not surprising that we have reached the era of the International Man. Amid the strident cries of nationalism from newly independent nations of Asia and Africa and in the complacently preoccupied provincialism of America's Midwest it is easy to overlook him, but he is there.

Attitudes Toward The Use Of Force And Violence In Thomas Muentzer, Menno Simons, And Martin Luther, Ralph L. Moellering Jul 1960

Attitudes Toward The Use Of Force And Violence In Thomas Muentzer, Menno Simons, And Martin Luther, Ralph L. Moellering

Concordia Theological Monthly

The treatise offered here seeks to extract and delineate, from three leading figures of the Reformation period, three basic attitudes toward the use of force and violence which have been, and continue to be, assumed by the followers of Jesus Christ. When Constantine first raised the Christian banner in front of his armies he was already tending in the direction of the first position exemplified most clearly in the career and theology of Thomas Muentzcr.

Law-Gospel-Oriented Preaching In Martin Luther's Theology Of Preaching, Chul Hwan Kim May 1960

Law-Gospel-Oriented Preaching In Martin Luther's Theology Of Preaching, Chul Hwan Kim

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Goal of this thesis is to study Luther's theology of preaching. As we have already seen above, the first chapter outlines the world of Luther's preaching. The second chapter explores Luther's preaching, focusing on his specific concern for preaching. In it, we can see that Luther regards preaching as the oral Word of God. Luther believes God is speaking when the preacher preaches. This chapter will show us that Luther's understanding of preaching is concentrated upon the Lord, Christ who is the content of Gospel.

Pamela-Shamela: A Study Of The Criticisms, Burlesques, Parodies, And Adaptations Of Richardson's "Pamela", Bernard Kreissman May 1960

Pamela-Shamela: A Study Of The Criticisms, Burlesques, Parodies, And Adaptations Of Richardson's "Pamela", Bernard Kreissman

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The English novel traces its roots beyond the medieval romance, but it first began to assume recognizable form early in the eighteenth century with such books as Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Roxanna, and Moll Flanders; Mrs. Behn's Oroonoko and Swift's Gulliver's Travels. It was not until mid-century, however, that it took on its fun lineaments in the works of Richardson, Fielding, Smollett, Sterne, and their followers. The first of these "true" novels, published on November 6, 1740, was Richardson's Pamela: or, Virtue Rewarded. Pamela caught on, enjoyed a great popular vogue, started several schools of fiction, and was directly responsible for …

A Study Of Hypnotism In The Works Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Helen Lei Hsu Apr 1960

A Study Of Hypnotism In The Works Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Helen Lei Hsu

Master's Theses

I propose in this study to examine the uses of hypnotism in two of Hawthorne 's tales: "Ethan Brand" and "The Prophetic Pictures"; and three of Hawthorne's romances: Fanshawe, The House of the Seven Gables, and The Blithedale Romance. My aims are generally these: to investigate Hawthorne's interest in hypnotism with reference to the manifested popularity of hypnotism in his time; to identify Hawthorne's implication of hypnotism in the above tales and romances; and to analyze Hawthorne 's art of interweaving his themes with the practice of hypnosis.
