The Body Of Christ, Richard R. Caemmerer May 1964

The Body Of Christ, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Apology of the Augsburg Confession warns against two distortions in the meaning of the church. The one is that the church be viewed as an outward organization in which believers and hypocrites are mingled. In the days of the Reformation this distortion implied that the church was a political organization to which men adhered through the carrying out of rites and obligations. In our own time it may take the form of stress on extending and financing the church's business to the point of devaluating its other concerns. The other distortion is that the church is regarded as a …

Christianity Encounters Totalitarianism In Germany, Viola M. Gross Apr 1964

Christianity Encounters Totalitarianism In Germany, Viola M. Gross

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

The German Church of the twentieth century offers a unique opportunity for study. It has twice faced a totalitarian government and has needed to learn to exist and carry on its witness to the Word of God in the face of almost insurmountable obstacles. The purpose of this paper is to contrast and compare the answer of the Church and the Christian to the National Socialists and to the Communists in East Germany, and to determine if possible if Christianity has learned the way through its desperate struggle in this century to continue its task under a hostile …

Andrew Johnson And The Failure Of Moderate Reconstruction, Fraces Jo-Ann Cartwright Jan 1964

It is, furthermore, the contention of the paper that moderate reconstruction failed because of the ineffectiveness of its administrator--Andrew Johnson--not because of cabalistic intrigues hatched by those whom F.B. Simkins scoffingly …

Mirror For Businessmen: Bronson Howard’S Melodramas, Maxwell Bloomfield Jan 1964

Mirror For Businessmen: Bronson Howard’S Melodramas, Maxwell Bloomfield

Scholarly Articles

Every nation has its master theme, Bronson Howard observed around 1886. In France, this perennial topic is marital infelicity; in England it is caste; in the United States, it is business. " The remark may seem trite today, when business ideals have permeated all corners of American society, when businessmen-novelists are celebrating the virtues of the "great American game" and when business-oriented historians are demanding that we scrap the term "robber barons" in referring to the founders of our industrial fortunes. The businessman has become the dominant symbol of our age, but in 1886 his status and popular appeal remained …
