United States Opinion From Munich To The Blitzkreig, Barbara Evans Jan 1967

United States Opinion From Munich To The Blitzkreig, Barbara Evans

Honors Theses

In the late nineteen-thirties "isolationism" determined American attitudes toward Europe. Basically, the term, used to describe that period, refers to the beliefs which decreed that the United States should have no part in foreign quarrels.

This paper will attempt to analyze the feelings of the majority of Americans. Many men counseled non-involvement for many reasons, and extremists ranged from the Catholic priest, Father Coughlin, a man with definite pro-German sympathies, to Charles A. Lindberg, who thought that Hitler could not be beaten. Attention here will not be directed at these extremely small fringe groups, but at the "average" American, as …

The Christian And Social Responsibility, Robert J. Werberig Dec 1966

The Christian And Social Responsibility, Robert J. Werberig

Concordia Theological Monthly

What is the Christian's role in the many-faceted, restless, and paradoxical society of the 60s? Should his function as a Christian citizen include more than merely "holding a private opinion" on the issues of our times? Does his commitment to Christ imply something more than "contributing to welfare" in face of the fact that over two-thirds of his generation lives out life under starvation conditions? Is there a valid place for the voice and action of Christianity within the vortex of change, which today upsets whole cultures, often with crushing and dehumanizing effects to people?

Loving Without Destroying: A Study Of Welfare Work In The Inner City, Considering The Problem Of Freedom With A Special Reference To Dostoevsky's "The Legend Of The Grand Inquisitor", Michael Wendt

Bachelor of Divinity

Church leaders today are saying that the future of the church is being decided in the inner city. If the church is able to rise above itself, to meet the challenge of the inner city, they aver, there is hope that it might also be able to meet the challenge of its existence in other geographic and intellectual realms as well. It is in the inner city that the church meets the problems of existence head-on. It is there that reality is met. It is there that the church cannot hide behind pious words or statements by committees. The church …

The Eclipse Of Lutheranism In 17th-Century Czechoslovakia, Marianka Sasha Fousek Nov 1966

The Eclipse Of Lutheranism In 17th-Century Czechoslovakia, Marianka Sasha Fousek

Concordia Theological Monthly

This article is concerned with the fate of Lutheranism in "Czechoslovakia" in the 17th century. I am using the somewhat anachronistic name "Czechoslovakia" for this area as a convenient symbol for both the Czech lands, that is, the crown lands of Bohemia, and the Slovak territory under Hungary. The Czech lands, often referred to also as the crown lands of St. Wenceslas, included Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, and Lusatia. Slovakia on the other hand belonged to the Hungarian crown of St. Stephen ever since the Magyar invasion of the Danube valley in the 11th century. Thus in spite of the close …

An Evaluation Of The Autobiographical Interpretation Of Samson Agonistes, Edward P. Crockett Jul 1966

An Evaluation Of The Autobiographical Interpretation Of Samson Agonistes, Edward P. Crockett

Master's Theses

Certainly, every reader of Samson Agonistes who is at all familiar with the circumstances of Milton's life, his thought, and the history of his times has been attracted by obvious parallels between 'the poet and certain aspects or his dramatic creation, and he may understandably assume that the presentation or the sufferings of Samson constitute intentional, hidden autobiography. To assume even the obvious, however, is something too blithely done. A little research into this area of Miltoniana will reveal to him that scholarly opinion concerning Samson Agonistes and autobiography is greatly varied and that some scholars are inclined not only …

The United States Constabulary In Germany: 1945-1950, Alfred Walter Turney, Lieutenant Colonel, Usa (Ret)

History ETDs

Not long ago, a professor of history at a major American university published an article deploring the lack of interest in military history in America and the general tendency among historians and history students to avoid military subjects as if they wore a plague. "Military history,'' the professor wrote, " ...comprises the entire posture of a nation or nations for purposes of achieving national policy by physical force, or the threat of it. Military history, in other words, is not confined to fighting… (In addition to their causes), there is need for great stress upon the consequences of wars.... Military …
