François Pierre Guillaume Guizot: An Intellectual Approach, Elbert Hardy Cave May 1971

François Pierre Guillaume Guizot: An Intellectual Approach, Elbert Hardy Cave

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of this study was to present an intellectual picture of a man who is too often written off as a mere politician and a failure at that.

In approaching the problem, his works were used heavily, though availability was a problem. François Guizot, the man studied, wrote profusely, on a large variety of subjects, including philosophy, religion, history, political theory, and education. All of these areas were covered in the study. His private papers and correspondence are, for the most part, unpublished, though the eight volumes of his Mémoires were extremely helpful.

There are many good biographical studies …

Foreign Policy Decisions Which Led To United States Military Occupation Of The Dominican Republic, Bert Lewis Junior Farrar Apr 1971

Foreign Policy Decisions Which Led To United States Military Occupation Of The Dominican Republic, Bert Lewis Junior Farrar

Dissertations and Theses

To achieve independence, the Dominican Republic had to first endure three centuries of heavy-handed Spanish rule and period of Haitian domination that lasted for twenty-two years. Fear of Haitian reconquest, however, convinced the leading Dominican politicians that the new nation could not long endure without foreign protection.

Encouraged by Dominican offers of a naval base, the United States toyed with the idea of expansion in the Caribbean as early as 1850, but civil war cut short these notions and allowed Spain to reassert control over her former colony. Although Spanish occupation ended in failure the United States became more determined …

Shaw's Comic Tone : From Laughter To The Broken Harp String, R. K. Thomas Apr 1971

Shaw's Comic Tone : From Laughter To The Broken Harp String, R. K. Thomas

Honors Theses

George Bernard Shaw's literary career lasted over seventy years. He wrote prolifically. The most complete collection of his work, the Ayot St. Lawrence Edition, runs to over thirty-one volume, yet it is not all inclusive. His efforts were always motivated by the desire to expand and expound his social and political philosophy. Although the canon of Shavian criticism approaches his motives from a wide of variety of angles and avenues, Shaw singled out "passion of pure political Weltverbesserungwahn (worldbettermentcrase)" as his "own devouring malady." Defining his artistic objectives as conveying a "feeling" to an audience and making "them sympathetic with …

The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod And World War I-A Study Of The Loyalty Problem During World War I And Theodore Conrad Graebner's Attempt To Solve It, Walter Steinbach Mar 1971

The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod And World War I-A Study Of The Loyalty Problem During World War I And Theodore Conrad Graebner's Attempt To Solve It, Walter Steinbach

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper deals with troubles experienced by the Missouri Synod in general, but its answer to the major problems are based almost exclusively on the writings of Professor Theodore Conrad Graebner. Professor Graebner was on the faculty at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1914 he assumed the role as co-editor of the Lutheran Witness, the official English periodical of the Missouri Synod. Professor Graebner was probably the most important leader of the Missouri Synod who attempted to prove its loyalty during this time. He also became the advisor, for many pastors who did not know what to do …

Twentieth-Century Lutheran Attitudes Toward War, Daniel Parsch Mar 1971

Twentieth-Century Lutheran Attitudes Toward War, Daniel Parsch

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper is an attempt to show the attitudes and ideas of leading Lutherans on the matter of war and the participation in war. The Lutheran Church has been, in the past, and remains an important part of the whole Christian witness. Therefore, the ideas of prominent men in this body are important for study in order to more fully understand the position which the whole Lutheran Church has taken in regard to this problem. In order to limit the scope of such a study, the paper will deal mainly with 20th Century attitudes. Likewise, the main Lutheran bodies to …

The Vanguard

For we are ruled by Christ's love for us, now that we recognize that one man died for all men, which means that all men take part in his death. He died for all men so that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but only for him who died and raised to life for their sake.

No longer, then, do we judge anyone by human standards. Even if at one time we judged Christ according to human standards, we no longer do so. When anyone is joined to Christ he is a new being: the old is …

The Political Role Of Religious Pacifism During The Inter-War Years, Ancil K. Nance

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this paper is to attempt to make a judgment concerning the effectiveness of the selected political actions of certain religious peace groups during the inter-war years. Information was obtained from the Portland State University Library, the Multnomah County Library, the Methodist Episcopal Church of Oregon office, the national offices of the American Friends Service Committee, the National Council of Churches, and the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Symbol And Mood In Tennyson's Nature Poetry, Margery Moore Taylor Jan 1971

Symbol And Mood In Tennyson's Nature Poetry, Margery Moore Taylor

Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to show Tennyson's preoccupation with nature in his poetry, his use of her as a projector of moods and symbolism, the interrelation of landscape with depth of feeling and narrative or even simple picturesqueness. Widely celebrated as the supreme English poet and often called the Victorian Oracle, Tennyson may well be considered the best exemplar of the nineteenth century. T.S. Eliot acclaimed his poetic greatness because of his "abundance, variety, and complete competence." In addition to these positive attributes he displayed elements typical of the Victorian Age, dignity, seriousness, industrious application. More importantly, Tennyson …

Totiusque Ecclesiae Suae Sanctae; A Comparison Of The Ecclesiologies Of St. Augustine And Hans Kung, Edward J. Sullivan Jan 1971

Totiusque Ecclesiae Suae Sanctae; A Comparison Of The Ecclesiologies Of St. Augustine And Hans Kung, Edward J. Sullivan

Dissertations and Theses

This paper attempts to compare the ecc1esio1ogies of the fourth century Bishop of Hippo and the controversial twentieth century theo1ogian. In doing so, a study is made of each writer independently in order to extract his conceptual models of the Church. Special significance is given to the names each attributed to the Church and the consequences of these names as they pass from an analogical to an ecc1esio1ogica1 sphere. A study is also made of the functions of office within the Church with respect to the fulfillment of specific ministries. Here the two divide, Augustine meets the Donatist challenge by …
