The History Of Gun Control In America, Gary W. Hansen Feb 1976

The History Of Gun Control In America, Gary W. Hansen

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the significant gun control legislation enacted in the United States, and the movement to enact it. It is a contention of this thesis that sentiment favoring gun control comes essentially from urban areas which are most remote from America's frontier heritage, and the common usage of firearms. Sentiment opposing gun control, on the other hand, comes primarily from the West and South which are the areas nearest the frontier heritage. The popularity of firearms in the United States is also due, in large measure, to the pioneer background of this nation. This thesis also contends that firearms …

Scrutinizing A Giant: Frisch's And Duerrenmatt's Views Of America Jan 1976

Scrutinizing A Giant: Frisch's And Duerrenmatt's Views Of America

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Ever since its discovery America has fascinated, intrigued and also repelled Europeans. And ever since in the 17th century Europeans have started to emigrate in greater numbers to North America, this land has been a puzzling giant to the transatlantic contemplator. For quite some time, the Europeans' direct experience and even their factual information was limited and, thus, the new continent was understandably prone to be mythified-be it as some sort of earthly paradise where goodness and freedom reigned, be it as a degenerated place infected by all imaginable vices of modern times. Yet even with today's array of information, …

T. Thomas Fortune: Land, Labor And Politics In The South, 1883-1886, C. Edward Shacklee

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

It is an attempt to show both the reformist and traditional approaches applied to the problems of his race, approaches that foreshadowed much of black though in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

New & Selected Poems, Peggy Pond Church Jan 1976

New & Selected Poems, Peggy Pond Church

Ahsahta Press

Peggy Pond Church spent nearly her whole life among the mesas and mountains of New Mexico, and her love of that landscape permeates many of the poems in this collection. Born in 1903, Church authored four volumes of poems between 1933 and 1954, and this book makes twelve additional uncollected works available.

“Mrs. Church’s poetry is distinctly of this time, the work of a fine human being, concerned with the terror of the hour,” wrote William Rose Benét, reviewing the book Ultimatum for Man for Saturday Review of Literature in 1946, the year of its publication. As T.M. Pearce notes …

The U.S. - U.S.S.R. Nuclear Balance: Present And Future, Bruce Levinson

Honors Papers

The purpose of this paper will be to arrive at some sort of understanding about the real importance of nuclear weapons in the hands of the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., something which has not been done heretofore in as skilled a fashion as is possible. There are a number of reasons for this, some of which are worth looking into because of the impact they have had on the actual policies of the United States.

British Military Thinking, 1902-1914, Lawrence R. Maxted Jan 1976

British Military Thinking, 1902-1914, Lawrence R. Maxted

Honors Papers

The twelve years between the end of the Boer War (1899-1902) and August 1914 were a period of military reform for Britain. As a result of Army errors and deficiencies, the military came under criticism and ultimately reform. The Army was transformed from an unwieldy conglomeration of units into an expandable striking force ready for overseas service. Though the Navy had not been involved in the South African fighting, its defects were readily apparent in the light of postwar reform. So too were those of high level military policy making which was then revamped through the creation of the Committee …

Dramatic Structure And Philosophy In Brutus, Alzire And Mahomet, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Oct 1975

Dramatic Structure And Philosophy In Brutus, Alzire And Mahomet, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

An impressive amount of recent critical work has dealt with the philosophic element in Voltaire's tragedies. His plays have been labelled a theatre of involvement and a theatre of ideas; they have been examined from the standpoint of propaganda and as tragedy. However, the focus of such studies has been primarily on Voltaire's message or on the meaning of the plays, rather than on the dramatic structure he created to convey his philosophic concerns.

Today, of course, Voltaire does not rank high either as an original thinker or as a dramatist. Nonetheless, his attempt to introduce his philosophic concerns into his …
