Alfred Henry Lewis, Abe C. Ravitz Jan 1978

Alfred Henry Lewis, Abe C. Ravitz

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

He was a cowboy and a lawyer, a journalist and a novelist. At ease passing the time of day with drifters in front of Melinda's House of Call at Watrous (Mora County) in the sparse territory of New Mexico or debating socio-economic philosophy with sophisticated Tammany politicians just outside City Hall in New York, Alfred Henry Lewis—Western regionalist and Eastern muckraker—was enchanted by America’s land of legend and myth beyond the frontier, and he forever glanced backward with nostalgia at his “pampas years,” when he roved "for many moons" between “the Canadian in the Panhandle and the Gila in Arizona.” …

Charles Alexander Eastman (Ohiyesa), Marion W. Copeland Jan 1978

Charles Alexander Eastman (Ohiyesa), Marion W. Copeland

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Because Charles Eastman’s best known book is his earliest, Indian Boyhood (1902), and because that autobiography and its sequel, From the Deep Woods to Civilization (1916), have been most often used as sources for studies of the cultural transition of the Sioux, the literary value of those and of Eastman’s later books has gone largely unexamined. Eastman subtitled the 1916 volume The Autobiography of an Indian, but one cannot therefore assume that the conventions of European-American autobiography control Eastman’s work.

The Word Tsedeq In Deutero Isaiah, Kenneth Ward Jones Jan 1978

The Word Tsedeq In Deutero Isaiah, Kenneth Ward Jones

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this study to examine the semantic variations adhering to the word tsedeq in Isaiah 40-55 (Deutero Isaiah). It is our thesis that the word tsedeg does not contain an essential meaning which can be ascertained apart from its contextual referents. The word tsedeq is not invested by the author of chs. 40-55 with a semantic distinctiveness that is primarily oriented to an explicit theological reality. We do not believe, for example, that tsedeq attains “the status of the key to the understanding of the whole diving work of salvation.” The bestowal of such a “status” …

Three Essays On The Reality Of Art, Brent A. Sparlin Jan 1978

Three Essays On The Reality Of Art, Brent A. Sparlin

Masters Theses

Three essays make up the main body of the thesis. The essays, “Can Art Really Be Real?,” “The Artist's Role” and “The Artist's Role in Society, Part II; Silence,” each deal with specific subjects which when combined, explain the thesis' title, The Reality of Art.

The first essay, “Can Art Really Be Real?” is an attempt to clarify what is real from what is unreal in art. The essay deals first with representational realism (such as is found in the work of Thomas Eakins), and defines artists who strive for exact renderings of objects as being illusionistic and not …

Oracula Mortis In The Pharsalia, John F. Makowski Jul 1977

Oracula Mortis In The Pharsalia, John F. Makowski

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Although it departs from epic convention in many ways, most notably in the rejection of the deorum ministeria, the Pharsalia adheres to tradition in the matter of oracles and contains three visitations to a seat of prophecy. Appius goes to Delphi (5. 67-236), Sextus Pompeius to the Thessalian witch Erichtho (6. 413-830), and Cato to the temple of Jupiter Hammon (9. 511-86). The obvious similarities of the situations invite comparison, but no one has as yet attempted to analyze them as a unit.' Such a study, however, will be fruitful because the three episodes have more in common than first …

The Relationship Of The Protestant Episcopal Church In Virginia With The Negro Slaves 1830 To 1860: Success Or Failure?, Elisabeth Evans Wray

Master's Theses

Some conclusions may be drawn as to the success—or failure--of the Church's relationship with the slaves in nineteenth-century Virginia by constructing a narrative of the general attitudes held by the Episcopal Church (the bishops and other clergy and the laity) and the actions resulting from them. The years from 1830 to 1860 are the most fruitful period of the century in revealing through sermons, letters, newspapers, and books the Church's ideas concerning the institution of religious instruction for the slaves and their place in the life of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Virginia. Because many of the attitudes …
