A Study Of The Syracusan Coins From The Ottilia Buerger Collection, Kelly Swett May 1993

A Study Of The Syracusan Coins From The Ottilia Buerger Collection, Kelly Swett

Lawrence University Honors Projects

The study of Syracusan numismatics is illustrated through the examination of thirteen coins from the Sicilian city in the Ottilia Buerger Collection of Lawrence University. The coins range in date from the fifth to the third century B.C. Although their major function was economic, the Syracusan coins have continually been the objects of admiration and study even from ancient times. In the past, studies of Syracusan coins have usually been limited to one topic, and, in general, style has rarely been discussed. This analysis of the Syracusan coins, in contrast, discusses and illustrates the importance of four interrelated areas: the …

Human Rights And Policy Wrongs: United States Involvement In The Creation And Overthrow Of The Somoza Regime, Kevin A. Katovich '93 May 1993

Human Rights And Policy Wrongs: United States Involvement In The Creation And Overthrow Of The Somoza Regime, Kevin A. Katovich '93

Honors Projects, History

In recent years there have been many works published on the Sandinistas and the fall of the Somoza dynasty. Few works center on the change in U.S. policy toward Nicaragua. Two stand out: Condemned to Repetition, by Robert Pastor, and Lake's Somoza Falling. Pastor served as a policy expert toward Nicaragua for the National security council, (NSC) under carter.(4) These books do not delve deeply into the ironies and contradictions of the Carter Administration's foreign policy (due probably to their close association with the administration). Furthermore, they do not look into the early history of Nicaragua, in particular, the rise …

Effectively Radiated Powers: The Cultural Impact Of Media On A Kentucky Community, William Drury May 1993

Effectively Radiated Powers: The Cultural Impact Of Media On A Kentucky Community, William Drury

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis chronicles the development of Henderson and its media. Unlike most pioneering towns that sprung up west of the Allegheny and Appalachian Mountains during the 18th century, Henderson assumed a unique position in the development of the Midwest as an important and major tobacco port, as an agricultural conduit to the North and industrial path to the South. and as an outpost of trade to the West. A clearer picture of its aggressive nature becomes evident by tracing the hard-fought beginnings of the region. As Henderson grew in importance, so did its lust grow for excitement and entertainment. Compared …

They Also Served : The Women Of Southwestern Virginia During The American Revolution, Rebecca A. Vaught May 1993

They Also Served : The Women Of Southwestern Virginia During The American Revolution, Rebecca A. Vaught

Master's Theses

This thesis looks at the legal status and the daily lives of the women living on the Virginia frontier in the counties of Augusta, Botetourt, Montgomery and Washington during the period of the American Revolution. All ages and all levels of society are given consideration in developing the theme that the service performed by the women who survived the rigors of frontier life during this crucial period in American history was as valuable in its own way as was the service performed by their male contemporaries. Court records give insight into the plight of servants and slaves. Court records also …

Genocide And The Indians Of California, 1769-1873, Margaret A. Field May 1993

Genocide And The Indians Of California, 1769-1873, Margaret A. Field

Graduate Masters Theses

This study is an effort to determine whether the phenomenon of genocide, as defined in the UN Convention on Genocide of 1948, played a distinguishable role in the sharp decline of the California Indian population during the period 1769 to 1873. Through examination of such resources as memoirs, newspaper accounts of the time, anthropological and demographic studies, government documents, and works on genocide theory, it considers key issues of intent and action on the part of the Spanish, Mexicans, and Americans who arrived in California during the period.

The evidence indicates that genocide of indigenous peoples occurred in California in …

The Cache Valley Shoshones: Cultural Change, Subsistence, And Resistance, To 1870, John W. Heaton May 1993

The Cache Valley Shoshones: Cultural Change, Subsistence, And Resistance, To 1870, John W. Heaton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the xii Shoshones of Cache Valley evolved from scattered pedestrian hunter-gatherers to large, armed, mounted bands that hunted and gathered from the Great Basin to the Plains. Trade with European Americans helped initiate this evolution. However, Shoshones did not respond passively to the presence of European Americans. Shoshones actively sought change, and incorporated trade goods into their culture within a Shoshone context. They adapted to each wave of European Americans that they encountered. When Mormons dispossessed them of their land, Cache Valley Shoshones resisted by going on the offensive. Finally overwhelmed, the remnants of …

The Impractical Ideal Costa Rica, The United States And Central America Reunification, 1902-1932, Donald R. Lam May 1993

The Impractical Ideal Costa Rica, The United States And Central America Reunification, 1902-1932, Donald R. Lam

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the motivations of Central American Unionists and the failure of their movement in the early years of the twentieth century. The existing literature attributes the failure of Central American unification during this era to U.S. policies meant to maintain a divided isthmus in order to economically and politically exploit the region. A closer analysis of the primary sources, however, reveals that union failed because of internal factors, and that Washington's actions generally favored efforts to rejoin the nations to reduce isthmian tensions. Attempts to reunite the republics failed because of regional and domestic political rivalries, weaknesses in …

"Low-Intensity Warfare" In The Inner City: Veterans' Self-Control Strategies May Ameliorate Community Violence Among Youth, Erwin Randolph Parson Mar 1993

"Low-Intensity Warfare" In The Inner City: Veterans' Self-Control Strategies May Ameliorate Community Violence Among Youth, Erwin Randolph Parson

Trotter Review

The use of weapons in various inner-city communities in America is comparable to Nicaraguan "low-intensity warfare" whose objective was the mass terrorization of civilians by the Contras. Low-intensity warfare theory is defined as "total war at the grassroots level" (Summerfield and Tosser 1991, 85). Violence in the inner cities has been defined in similar ways by many authorities and observers. Although urban violence may not damage the infrastructure of communities to the same extent that lowintensity warfare does, its immediate and long-term impact is nonetheless devastating to human life and to a sense of security. In essence, it is a …

The Battle Of Little Round Top: An Analysis Of Battle Alternatives Through Commercial Wargames, John J. Mcguiness Mar 1993

The Battle Of Little Round Top: An Analysis Of Battle Alternatives Through Commercial Wargames, John J. Mcguiness

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the problem of whether one can use commercial wargames as a tool for historical research. The research examines two wargames dealing with the battle of Little Round Top: Gettysburg: The Turning Point and Thunder at the Crossroads. This research emphasized the need to analyze the wargame's structure prior to playing the game. This will avoid a possible mistake of drawing a conclusion about a particular driver in the battle which may not be from the historical situation but rather an inevitable outcome produced by the model's basic assumptions. Additionally, quantitative measures of time lines, casualty rates, and …

A Summary Of The History Of The Caddo People, Frank F. Schambach

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

I am pleased and very honored that you have invited me here today to tell you something about the past of the Caddo people as it is known to archaeologists. This is a subject that has been both my occupation and my major preoccupation for more than 25 years. The story that I and other archaeologists have been piecing together over many years is long, complex, and endlessly fascinating. It is a heritage that anyone could be proud of. Let me give you some of the highlights.

The story began over 11,500 years ago--or about 9,500 B.C.--when the first people …
