Warrior-Club Traditions In Medieval Switzerland, Arnold H. Price

Swiss American Historical Society Review

This article endeavors to serve as an extension (as well as a confirmation) of my research on the role of warrior clubs during the era of migrations, the so-called Völkerwanderung. In regard to the Völkerwanderung terminology I am relying in this study primarily on the ground-breaking work of the late Hans Georg Wackemagel, whose novel anthropological approach unearthed and analyzed a substantial body of pagan traditions surviving in medieval Helvetia.

The Embodiment Of Responsibility: “Confession” And “Compensation” In Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, Andrew Strathern, Pamela J. Stewart

Pacific Studies

We discuss two contexts of responsibility for action in Mount Hagen, confession and compensation. Verbal confessions of either wrongdoing or resentment against wrongdoing are important signs of the exercise of agency, but if they are not made, it is expected that sickness will result. “Substance” thus takes over where “agency” fails, and the two are intimately linked. Compensation payments can be seen as nonverbal equivalents of confession or the logical result of it, and if they are not paid, sickness or a failure of wounds to heal is thought to be likely as a result. In contemporary times both confession …

The Promethean, Volume 06, Number 02, Spring 1998, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

What a glorious spring! How lucky we are to live in such delightful surroundings. The Pacific Northwest is a gardener's delight, full of fertile soil and scenic beauty. Our own Concordia campus is a wonderful example of the exciting variety of blooms, blossoms, greenery, and landscaping that can be achieved here. It's such a treat to walk around campus and observe the many plants, lovingly tended by our grounds crew, all wildly blooming and sweetly scented. Your eye strays from one blossom to another ...to the ivy-covered brick walls...what a great oak tree...look, there's a daffodil next to a...cigarette butt? …

Keep The Flyin' Eight Balls Rollin': Military Leadership In The 3360th Quartermaster Truck Company, Grant T. Weller

Theses and Dissertations

The 3360th Quartermaster Truck Company, originally Company D of the 2639th Quartermaster Truck Battalion, was created in 1942 by drawing troops and officers from anti-aircraft units stationed in North Africa, to meet an emergency need for highway transportation to support the Allied advance East across North Africa. The reassigned troops and officers received no training in their new duties, but were instead immediately dispatched to the front with vital supplies. The company continued operations through North Africa, and on into Sicily and Italy. While in Italy, Elmer H. Puchta, previously assigned to the company as a platoon commander, took command. …

"They Always Leave Us’: Lord Jim, Colonialist Discourse, And Conrad's Magic Naturalism, Richard Ruppel Apr 1998

"They Always Leave Us’: Lord Jim, Colonialist Discourse, And Conrad's Magic Naturalism, Richard Ruppel

English Faculty Articles and Research

"Today, this information about Jewel's origins and her great fear that Jim will desert her because he is white and she is not must be gleaned rather painstakingly from the novel. But Conrad's contemporary readers would have understood her situation and her fear immediately, for the instability of white/non-white romances is a very common trope of late-nineteenth century colonialist fiction. In colonialist stories, the white man always leaves, and the non-white woman often knows that he will."

Review Of Marche Des Arts Du Spectacle Africain (Masa '97), Sharon E. Friedler

Dance Faculty Works

A panoply of over fifty dance, music, and theatre events from twenty African countries was performed at seven different venues, including indoor and outdoor theatres, clubs, concert halls, courtyards, gardens, and a sports stadium. The Moroccan company Ballet-Théâtre Zinoun presented Psyché Ou La Légende D'Adonis, a revisiting of the Adonis legend in which the balletic movement vocabulary and neoclassical choreographic techniques were interspersed with scenes in which a narrator alternated the words of Arab poets with riffs on his soprano saxophone.

Der Grund Der Seligkeit Luther's Evangelical & Christological Method Of Distinguishing Doctrine Within The Early Church Councils & Fathers, Jeffrey Meyers Feb 1998

Der Grund Der Seligkeit Luther's Evangelical & Christological Method Of Distinguishing Doctrine Within The Early Church Councils & Fathers, Jeffrey Meyers

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

This essay will analyze Luther's On the Councils and the Church, especially Parts I and II, in search of the criteria he uses for distinguishing between true and false doctrine in the ecumenical councils and consequently for "locating" the "true" church amid the confusing whirl of ecclesiastical traditions. It is my desire to allow Luther himself to speak, to engage the reader in Luther's own argument as it develops in this treatise. He does not show all of his cards in the first pages of the treatise. He builds his case slowly, methodically. As we shall see, according to Luther, …

On Being Agents Of God's Peace: Relationship And Roles Of The Roman Catholic Church In Croatia And The Serbian Orthodox Church In Ethnic Conflicts In Former Yugoslavia, Tatjana Peric

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Former Yugoslavia was a small country on the Balkan peninsula in south-east Europe - one of the most ethnically, linguistically, and religiously complicated areas of the world. Its peoples have gained dark fame for the first time in their history during the second decade of the twentieth century, causing the first world-wide war ever. The other event that brought the area into the spotlight was the civil war in Croatia and Bosnia, two of the six former Yugoslav republics - the others are Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. The civil strife, lasting from 1991 to the end of 1995, was …

Adams County In "The Splendid Little War," April Through August 1898, Timothy H. Smith

Adams County History

The Spanish American War lasted less than four months (April 25 to August 13, 1898). For the entire war, American casualties totaled less than 2,000 men, among them 345 killed or mortally wounded. Many more, however, died of disease (about 2000). Over the years, the war has been remembered as an event in which American interests and yellow journalism led to a conflict where the outcome was never in doubt. The nation of Spain, embroiled in internal dispute and civil unrest, was ripe for the picking and could do little to organize a defense of her colonies against a nation …

Elijah Parish Lovejoy The Man And The Myth, Scott Shirey

Senior Scholar Papers

The nation saw Lovejoy as representative of republican ideals; virtue. temperance. liberty, and self-sacrifice. Lovejoy had sacrificed his life for the Republic in defense of democratic values. Lovejoy was also a man who feared absolute power. It led him to despise Catholicism (under its Papal authority), fear immigration, and eventually despise the slaveholder. American's saw Lovejoy's stance against the mob as a truly republican act The Reverend Edward Beecher, President of Illinois College and close friend of Lovejoy, immediately recognized the significance of Lovejoy's death.

Not With A Bang, But A Whimper: The End Of The Archaic In Northeast Texas, Maynard B. Cliff Jan 1998

Not With A Bang, But A Whimper: The End Of The Archaic In Northeast Texas, Maynard B. Cliff

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Archaic period in Northeast Texas lasted for thousands of years and, if this length of time can be taken as any indication, it was as an extremely successful adaptation to the Holocene environment of North America. Accepting this view, however, begs the question: "why and how did the Archaic period come to an end?"

This paper uses the term "Archaic" to describe a "way of life" (see Story 1990:211), and in this sense, the Archaic period in eastern North America may be seen as a "tradition," characterized by small, band-level societies, marked by an economy based on "hunting, fishing, …
