Fighting Fascism In Europe: The World War Ii Letters Of An American Veteran Of The Spanish Civil War, Cane Lawrence

History

On his first day in basic training in 1942, Lawrence Cane wrote his wife Grace from Fort Dix, New Jersey. "I'm in the army now? Really!" he wrote, complaining, "I don't have enough time to write a decent letter."

Three years later, Capt. Lawrence Cane went home from World War II. He'd landed at Utah Beach on D-Day, helped liberate France and Belgium, and survived the Battle of the Bulge. He won a Silver Star for bravery. And he still managed to write 300 letters home to Grace. This book is a different kind of war story--both an powerful chronicle …

Military Imagery In Preaching: An Effective Means Of Nurturing A Lutheran Identity In The Military, Mark Steiner Mar 2003

Military Imagery In Preaching: An Effective Means Of Nurturing A Lutheran Identity In The Military, Mark Steiner

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

This major applied project consisted of two parts: a research component addressing the theoretical application of military imagery in preaching to a Lutheran military audience and an evaluative process, which tested the application of military imagery in preaching. The theoretical component, based upon the contributions of literature on cross cultural studies, leadership, strategic planning, rhetoric, and homiletics, recommended a homiletical strategy for preaching military imagery. The evaluative component validated the application of military imagery in preaching and recommended a strategy for promoting organic unity of military imagery with the other elements of the worship service.

Reading War With Nietzsche And Reading Nietzsche With Kant, Rimbaud, And Bataille, Adrian Gargett Mar 2003

Reading War With Nietzsche And Reading Nietzsche With Kant, Rimbaud, And Bataille, Adrian Gargett

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Reading War with Nietzsche and Reading Nietzsche with Kant, Rimbaud, and Bataille," Adrian Gargett discusses the aspects of poetry, communication, and notion that the apparition of Nietzsche manifested in Bataille is not a locus of secular reason but of necromantic religion: a writer who escapes philosophical conceptuality in the direction of unidentified zones, and dispenses with the "thing in itself" because it is an article of intelligible representation with no importance as a vector of becoming/of travel. Necromancy resists the transcendence of death opening territories of "voyages of discovery never reported." Against the strain of inert and …

Transforming America: The University As Public Good, Nancy Cantor

Imagining America

Nancy Cantor, chancellor and president of Syracuse University, outlines a number of bold campus-communitypartnerships, many of which were integral to the Brown v. Board of Education Commemoration at the University of Illinois. She makes a passionate case for the arts as “a context for exchange” and “a medium for participation” in a society where “pervasive and longstanding racial divides” exist. In response, Kristina Valaitis, director, Illinois Humanities Council, asks tough, affectionate questions of her university-based colleagues, and offers “suggestions for action,” including some pointed advice on the tenure system

Internal Dialogues: Construction Of The Self In The Woman Warrior, Ann Shirley Modzelewski Jan 2003

Internal Dialogues: Construction Of The Self In The Woman Warrior, Ann Shirley Modzelewski

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis considers past autobiographical theory and questions whether it addresses the autobiography of the female writer. Autobiographies of Harriet Jacobs, Margaret Sanger, and Maxine Hong Kingston are examined to reveal their polyvocality, use of the autobiographical "I", and rhetorical strategies maintained in order to create a close relationship with the reader. Particular attention is paid to Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of dialogism and Sidonie Smith's autobiographical "I."

Pippo: An Italian Folklore Mystery Of World War Ii, Alan R. Perry

Italian Faculty Publications

During the German occupation of Northern Italy (1943-45), the Italian populace lived under the grip of fear as Allied bombardments pummeled towns, Nazifascists raided villages looking for partisans, and food grew ever more scarce. When night fell many Italians had to contend with another menace, a mysterious aircraft that they were sure was specifically after them and their loved ones. So real and yet mysterious was this aircraft that they gave it a name: Pippo. No one was quite sure if it was German or Allied, single-engine or double-engine, if it dropped bombs, or what its primary mission was, but …

King René And The Women Of Anjou: The Myth And Reality Of Gender In Fifteenth-Century France, Hilary C. Smith Jan 2003

King René And The Women Of Anjou: The Myth And Reality Of Gender In Fifteenth-Century France, Hilary C. Smith

Humanities | Print Theses

Gender stereotypes in fifteenth-century France depicted women as inferior, weak, and dangerous to men. Noblewomen in this society were constrained by these stereotypes which were promoted and reinforced by religious notions, literary motifs and the legal system. King Rene's experience of women was entirely contradictory to the image of women presented in medieval culture. A key figure in the political and cultural events of the fifteenth century, Rene was surrounded by powerful and influential women whose lives had little in common with medieval definitions of female identity. This paper examines stereotypical depictions of women in medieval society and in the …
