Black Hole: The Role Of Black Aesthetics In Science Fiction, Thomas Leo Johnson
Black Hole: The Role Of Black Aesthetics In Science Fiction, Thomas Leo Johnson
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this thesis is to answer the question of why the genre of science fiction permits African-American authors to expand their themes beyond African-American concerns and characters. This thesis puts forward the argument that science fiction provides African-American writers with the capacity to craft their works' central conflicts to include or exclude issues that affect the Black community. This thesis answers the question in four points, the first being a brief historical overview of the debate within the Black literary community on the prevalence of Black aesthetics. The overview also gives a summary of the debate over …
Patchwork Culture: Quilt Tactics And Digitextuality, Michelle P. Barrett Ferrier
Patchwork Culture: Quilt Tactics And Digitextuality, Michelle P. Barrett Ferrier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Embedded in the quilt top, the fabric patches are relays, time pathways to stories and memories of their former owners. Through the quilts, the voices of the past survive. The stories trace a path of connection between oral traditions, storytelling, the invention of meaning, and the preservation of cultural memory. The theory and method described herein use the quilt patchwork metaphor as the basis for a web interface for designing and modeling knowledge-based graphical, narrative, and multimedia data. More specifically, the method comprises a digital storytelling and knowledge management tool that allows one or more users to create, save, store, …
A Biblical Theology Of Creation Care, Sandra Richter
A Biblical Theology Of Creation Care, Sandra Richter
The Asbury Journal
This essay briefly considers the seemingly modern topic of creation- care through a biblical theological lens, asking the question: "Is environmentalism a Christian value?" Tracing the narrative of Redemption from the Garden to the New Jerusalem (with particular attention given to the norms of Israelite society as regards land tenure and creature care), this article demonstrates that biblical law from every era communicates a similar theme: the earth, its produce, and its inhabitants belong to God, not to humanity. Moreover, according to Scripture, humanity's role as regards the creation is that of steward. God takes great pleasure in his creation, …

The Discourse Of Disease : The Representation Of Sars - The China Daily And The South China Morning Post, Jie Duan
Lingnan Theses
This thesis is a case study on newspaper discourse representation of SARS. The study uses two representative English newspapers in Asia – the China Daily (“CD”) and the South China Morning Post (“SCMP”). By comparing the discursive construction of the same event – the outbreak of SARS - in the two newspapers, it aims to reveal that the practice of news follows institutional, cultural and political assumptions, and also make visible the two newspapers’ embedded attitudes and ideological positions. The methodology is a critical corpus linguistics (CCL) approach, especially using KWIC format (Key Word in context), word frequency, collocation, and …
The Popular Images Of John Brown And Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, Sarah Clark
The Popular Images Of John Brown And Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, Sarah Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the evolution of the popular images of John Brown and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. It begins by analyzing the historiography of each man. The second and third chapters are biographies of each man. The fourth, fifth, and sixth chapters examine the popular images of the two men in print media, visual media, and monuments. This thesis concludes with appendices which contain reproductions of songs, photographs, and paintings referred to in the chapters. This study finds that the myth of the Lost Cause has kept Thomas Jackson's popular image consistently positive and heroic since his death in 1863. At …
Visioning The Nation: Classical Images As Allegory During The French Revolution, Kristopher Guy Reed
Visioning The Nation: Classical Images As Allegory During The French Revolution, Kristopher Guy Reed
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, France experienced a seismic shift in the nature of political culture. The king gave way to the nation at the center of political life as the location of sovereignty transferred to the people. While the French Revolution changed the structure of France's government, it also changed the allegorical representations of the nation. At the Revolution's onset, the monarchy embodied both the state and nation as equated ideas. During the Revolutionary Decade and through the reign of Napoleon different governments experienced the need to reorient these symbols away from the person of the …
The Swiss And The Nazis: How The Alpine Republic Survived In The Shadow Of The Third Reich, Stephen P. Halbrook
The Swiss And The Nazis: How The Alpine Republic Survived In The Shadow Of The Third Reich, Stephen P. Halbrook
Swiss American Historical Society Review
While surrounded by the Axis powers in World War II, Switzerland remained democratic and, unlike most of Europe, never succumbed to the siren songs and threats of the Nazi goliath. This book tells the story with emphasis on two voices rarely heard. One voice is that of scores of Swiss who lived in those dark years, told through oral history. They mobilized to defend the country, labored on the farms, and helped refugees. The other voice is that of Nazi Intelligence, those who spied on the Swiss and planned subversion and invasion. Exhaustive documents from the German Military Archives reveals …

parents and sisters (aged 2 and 4) lived in the Lowen-Platz in Luzern.
Appendix S: Trireme Warfare In Herodotus, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld
Appendix S: Trireme Warfare In Herodotus, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld
Classical Studies Faculty Research
§1. Herodotus describes a vigorous era in the history of the maritime traffic and warfare in the Mediterranean. Greek and Phoenician colonies anchored far-flung trading networks north to the Black Sea and west along the African and European coasts to Spain and even beyond the Straits of Gibraltar. Sea lanes had to be policed, colonies protected, parochial navies developed and increased. Furthermore, naval strength, always a prerogative of coastal and island states, became an important factor in the expanding domains of inland powers such as Sparta and Persia. The jostling of all these escalating commercial and political interests in the …

The Braggart Soldier: An Archetypal Character Found In "Sunday In The Park With George", Paul Gebb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In preparation for performance, an actor must develop an understanding for the character they portray. A character must be thoroughly researched to adequately enrich the performance of the actor. In preparation for the role of the "Soldier" in the production, Sunday in the Park with George, it is important to examine the evolution of the "Braggart Soldier" archetypal character throughout the historical literary canon. It is also of equal importance to study an author's canon of literature to acknowledge the reoccurring use of similar archetypal characters in order to successfully interpret the intentions of the author. This thesis paper will …

“For All The Saints”: A Feast For All People And All Time, Nathaniel G. Costa
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper examines the feast of All Saints, encompassing the beloved dead, both known and unacclaimed, as expressive of the paschal mystery in their partaking of the promise of life in the resurrection; it also poses the challenge for the living faithful to see themselves as saints in a recovery of the Pauline understanding of the term. The Feast of All Saints strengthens our full understanding of the communion of saints less solely as perfect individuals, remote in time and place from the present, and more as the faithful community of all times and places sharing in the life of …

Ethnic Conflict, Kristina Libby
Ethnic Conflict, Kristina Libby
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has experienced high levels of ethnic conflict with regard to exit claims by former satellite states that no longer want to be part of the federation. Exit claims often antagonize the state. However, political leaders of titular ethnicities maximize ethnic revivals to keep traditions alive, and to minimize the amount of exclusion vis-à-vis the center. Massive human rights violations have resulted because of misperceptions between the center and the periphery, especially in Chechnya, the Volga-Ural’s Region and Eastern Siberia.

When I was younger, shortly after my father died, my mother bought me a t-shirt that I loved and wore till it was worn out. On the shirt there was an image of a man, strapped into an electric chair, holding pieces of bread in each hand. A sign above him read, "Making the best of a bad situation." That statement became a mantra I held onto in the early years after my father's death. It still guides my personal philosophy---humor is key to survival. Particularly a type of humor that celebrates the fact that "shit happens", while highlighting and …
Life In An Occupied City: Women In Winchester, Virginia During The Civil War, Laura Jane Ping
Life In An Occupied City: Women In Winchester, Virginia During The Civil War, Laura Jane Ping
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the homefront experience of middle class, white women living in Winchester, Virginia during the Civil War. The experience of women in Winchester was unique because of Winchester's proximity to both the Union and Confederate capitals. Although the majority of Winchester's women were Confederate supporters a significant minority of the population remained loyal to the Union. Winchester citizens' divided status was further complicated by numerous occupations of the town by both armies. This thesis argues that in order to cope with wartime hardships women's concepts of patriotism changed as homefront morale waned. While early in the war women's …

A Surviving Legacy: Nonviolent Resistance In The Congresssional Black Caucus 2001-2007, Rhone Sebastian Fraser
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Select members of the Congressional Black Caucus through their votes, speeches, arrests and nonviolent forms of protest practice a renewed kind of nonviolent resistance against a neoconservative political agenda advanced by the executive branch of the U.S. government in the past six years. Their practices are nonviolent according to the definition of nonviolence discussed by Martin Luther King, Jr. in his 1962 New York Times Magazine article: "we will take direct action against injustice without waiting for other agencies to act...We will try to persuade with our words---but if our words fail we will try to persuade with our acts." …
Changing The Subject: First-Person Narration In And Out Of The Classroom, Susan Friedman
Changing The Subject: First-Person Narration In And Out Of The Classroom, Susan Friedman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The effectiveness of first-person narration for self-transformation and social change is indicated by exploring connections between three emergent discourses: illness narratives and memoirs by rape survivors in which the subject speaks from a privileged yet socially marginalized position about life-altering experiences; clinical discourse that elaborates treatment methods for empowering trauma survivors and helping them reconnect with the social world; and scholarly discourse that reflects on the relationship between trauma, self-representation, witnessing, and recovery. Post-Foucauldian theories of life-writing illuminate how the author-subjects of survivor narratives discursively reconstruct their shattered subjectivity in a therapeutic relationship with themselves and their readers. Cognitive and …
Sol-Gel Immobilized Cyano-Polydimethylsiloxane And Short Chain Polyethylene Glycol Coatings For Capillary Microextraction Coupled To Gas Chromatography, Sameer M. Kulkarni
Sol-Gel Immobilized Cyano-Polydimethylsiloxane And Short Chain Polyethylene Glycol Coatings For Capillary Microextraction Coupled To Gas Chromatography, Sameer M. Kulkarni
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Two highly polar sol-gel coatings were developed for capillary microextraction (CME). One of the coatings contained cyanopropyl-polydimethylsiloxane (CN-PDMS) and the other low molecular weight polyethylene glycol. These highly polar coatings were immobilized via sol-gel chemistry allowing for direct chemical bonding to the inner surface of fused silica capillaries. These sol-gel coated microextraction capillaries were employed in CME for solvent-free microextraction and preconcentration of trace analytes (polar, moderately polar, and nonpolar) from aqueous matrices. CN-PDMS and short chain PEG extraction phases exhibit both polar and polarizable characteristics. Therefore, both sol-gel CN-PDMS and short chain sol-gel PEG coatings were able to extract …
Meaning Makers Make It: Ambivalence About Ambiguity In Academic Discourse, David Haldane Lee
Meaning Makers Make It: Ambivalence About Ambiguity In Academic Discourse, David Haldane Lee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a broad survey of the uses of ambiguity in academic discourse. I note the uses of ambiguity in literary criticism, linking ambiguity with epistemic relativism. Then I pose the question, is the notion of "reframing" in psychotherapy analogous to the concept of "spin" in propaganda, advertising and public relations? In a consideration of theories that posit the social construction of reality, I examine articles by Judith Butler and Ian Hacking, noting the ambiguous reception of performativity and nominalism, respectively, within academia. In 1996 a physicist named Alan Sokal published an article which argued that reality is a …

The Chivalric Gawain, Carleigh Leffert
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The principal objective of this paper is to analyze Sir Gawain's efforts to balance the conflicting requirements of the Code of Chivalry with the basic needs of human nature to develop insights into the Gawain's character. Using an amalgamated definition of chivalry as the standard, I will examine Gawain's attempts to achieve his goal of being the perfect chivalric knight, determine the nature of his obstacles, and analyze the development of his character. In trying to live up to perfection, Gawain discovers that he is not perfect.
Bcl-2 Related Ovarian Killer, Bok, Is Cell Cycle Regulated And Sensitizes To Stress-Induced Apoptosis, José M. Rodríguez
Bcl-2 Related Ovarian Killer, Bok, Is Cell Cycle Regulated And Sensitizes To Stress-Induced Apoptosis, José M. Rodríguez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Bok/Mtd (Bcl-2-related ovarian killer/Matador) is considered a pro-apoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family. Though identified in 1997, little is known about its biological role. We have previously demonstrated that Bok mRNA is upregulated following E2F1 over-expression. In the current work, we demonstrate that Bok RNA is low in quiescent cells and rises upon serum stimulation. To determine the mechanism underlying this regulation, we cloned and characterized the mouse Bok promoter. We find that the mouse promoter contains a conserved E2F binding site (-43 to -49) and that a Bok promoter-driven luciferase reporter is activated by serum stimulation dependent on this …

Generation And Characterization Of An Attenuated Mutant In A Response-Regulator Gene Of Francisella Tularensis Live Vaccine Strain (Lvs), Wendy L. Sammons
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Francisella tularensis is a zoonotic bacterium that must exist in diverse environments ranging from arthropod vectors to mammalian hosts. To better understand how genes are regulated in these different environments, a transcriptional response- regulator gene (genome locus FTL0552) was deleted in F. tularensis live vaccine strain (LVS). The FTL0552 deletion mutant exhibited slightly reduced rates of extracellular growth but was unable to replicate or survive in mouse macrophages and was avirulent in the mouse model using either BALB/c or C57BL/6 mice. Mice infected with the FTL0552 mutant produced reduced levels of inflammatory cytokines, exhibited reduced histopathology and cleared the bacteria …

Bomb Media 1951-1964, Tristan Edward Abbott
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis looks at nuclear films, commercial and governmental, that were released between 1951 and 1964. Special attention is paid to the recursivity that existed between the propagandic, often outrageously inaccurate Civil Defense films made by the United States government and the subversive popular films made by visionary dissidents.
The films are divided into three periods. The earliest period focuses on Samuel Fuller's Pickup on South Street and the Robert Aldrich 's Kiss Me Deadly (based on the novel by Mickey Spillane), along with some of the earliest Civil Defense films. Special attention is paid to the politically minded creation …

What The Spirit Knows: Charles Williams And Kenneth Burke, Grace Veach
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
What the Spirit Knows: Charles Williams and Kenneth Burke examines the Arthurian poetry of Charles Williams using a methodology derived from Kenneth Burke. This is an experiment in literary criticism of a Christian poet using a methodology that is not specifically Christian. Key critical ideas found in Burke are utilized in reading poems from Taliessin Through Logres and Region of the Summer Stars. Burke's work on form and symbol (primarily from Counter-Statement) is addressed first. Form in an individual poem (using "Taliessin's Song of the Unicorn) and in an entire cycle is examined. Burke lists several uses for symbol in …
