Architecture And Nostalgia In The British Modern Novel, Heather Lynn Lusty May 2009

Architecture And Nostalgia In The British Modern Novel, Heather Lynn Lusty

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation focuses on Modern British literary culture and the construction of literary sites of nostalgia through architecture and landscape. The project considers examples from D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, Ford Madox Ford, and Evelyn Waugh, and examines how these authors employ presentations of architecture in their narratives to portray the irrevocably altered landscape of modernity.

The introduction presents the notion of national consciousness and literature, moving from Lukacs' conception of the historical novel to Victorian art critics John Ruskin and Walter Pater and their writings on national identity and architecture. Twentieth-century European culture responded to the trauma of the Great …

The Restriction Of Civil Liberties During Times Of Crisis: The Evolution Of America's Response To National Military Threats, Matthew D. Fairman May 2009

The Restriction Of Civil Liberties During Times Of Crisis: The Evolution Of America's Response To National Military Threats, Matthew D. Fairman

Government and International Relations Honors Papers

This treatise explores the nature and significance of the threat posed to civil liberties during times of major national military crisis and evaluates changes in the nature of wartime repression over the course of American history. It tests the thesis that the evolution in Americans’ response to such crises has not been a simple progression toward increasing restraint on the part of federal, state, and local policymakers, as is sometimes assumed. Rather, major twentieth and twenty-first century developments related to the nature of threats to American national security and government capabilities to covertly repress dissent have interacted with evolutionary changes …

Conservative Conservationists: Water Rights, Wilderness, And Idahoan Political Identity, Kelly M. Orgill May 2009

Conservative Conservationists: Water Rights, Wilderness, And Idahoan Political Identity, Kelly M. Orgill

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Idahoans' unique and contradictory history of conservation politics reveals deep tensions between expectations of individual water rights, a shared regard for natural beauty, and a deep-seated fear of government intervention. From its earliest settlers to its Sagebrush Rebels to its modern day miners and lumber crews, Idaho has teemed with those eager to profit from the state’s natural resources. The post-war interest in recreation and the environmental movement of the 1970s, however, promoted concern and support for preservation in Idaho. Coupled with the Idahoan obsession with water rights, Idaho environmentalism prompted the conservative Republican state to elect environmentally-minded Democrats Cecil …

Preaching The Story Behind The Image A Narrative Approach To Metaphor For Preaching, Justin P. Rossow May 2009

Preaching The Story Behind The Image A Narrative Approach To Metaphor For Preaching, Justin P. Rossow

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Rossow, Justin P. “Preaching the Story behind the Image: A Narrative Approach to Metaphor for Preaching.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary,2008.296pp.

In response to an increasingly image-driven culture, preachers have focused more and more attention on the use of imagery and metaphor in the sermon. The homiletics of metaphor, however, currently lacks a sufficient hermeneutical foundation. This dissertation lays the groundwork for a fuller understanding of how interpreters fill in the blanks left by metaphors in the biblical text and in the sermon. While the appendix describes a range of different theories on what metaphor is and how it works, the …

Living In (Im) Material Worlds: Modes Of Production And Consumption In Utopian Literature, Pauline Spangler May 2009

Living In (Im) Material Worlds: Modes Of Production And Consumption In Utopian Literature, Pauline Spangler

All Theses

My thesis examines and defines 'conditions of production' and 'conditions of consumption' as they apply to both Marxist economic theory and to the more culturally-oriented production and consumption of literary texts according to Pierre Bourdieu. I will establish the relationship between these conditions as cause and effect, complementary, and, finally, mutually necessary depending upon their context and manifestation. Alterations in the conditions of production and consumption affect our treatment of their corresponding, associative dichotomies in the literary tradition - the transcendent and the material, the spiritual and the corporal, the well-wrought art object and the commodity fetish, and, finally, male …

The Catholic Experience In Utah, Thomas G. Evans May 2009

The Catholic Experience In Utah, Thomas G. Evans

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The Merrill-Cazier Library at Utah State University has in its collection an infamous book that is talked about by both Mormons and non-Mormons alike: the first edition of Bruce R. McCon.1de'sMormonDoctrine.l Shocking and controversial when it first appeared in print for its characterization of the Catholic Church, among other controversial assessments, I had heard about it myself growing up as a member of the L.D.S. Church in various tales of Mormon folklore. McConkie's penchant for brusque, un-apologetic apologetics and bold declarations of the truth of the Mormon faith was legendary. One day, as I perused the book in the Library, …

An Identity Of Opposition Against Urban Cosmopolitan Setting In Yasmina Khadra's "The Attack" (2006), Retno Sukardan Mamoto Apr 2009

An Identity Of Opposition Against Urban Cosmopolitan Setting In Yasmina Khadra's "The Attack" (2006), Retno Sukardan Mamoto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Yasmina Khadra, a female name, pseudonym of Muhammed Moulessehoul, an Algerian military officer for 25 years is now a French citizen. John Cullen translates The attack (2006) from French. Rosenau's post-modernist perspective places the Israel-Palestine conflict in a context of social gap. Israel, a First World, whereas Palestine Third World, are both in the Middle East region. Amin Jaafari and his wife, Sihem, a couple of Arab naturalized citizens of Israel, live in urban cosmopolitan city of Tel Aviv. Opposing Amin's success as a surgeon, Sihem is more attracted to fight for the Palestinian liberation for a homeland. Sihem camouflaged …

One Season In An Other’S: Examining Teacher Preparation In Cultural Relevance Literacy Through Intentional And Focused Teaching Case Use, Coleen E. Sams Apr 2009

One Season In An Other’S: Examining Teacher Preparation In Cultural Relevance Literacy Through Intentional And Focused Teaching Case Use, Coleen E. Sams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Teacher educators need to develop better teaching methods in order to, ultimately, serve future students in classrooms that are increasing in diversity. It is vital that education majors do more than hear and read about social justice issues facing their prospective students; for them to both understand it and retain it, they need deeper interaction with the issues and alternative strategies for resolving them. This model for using teaching cases may enable teacher educators to demonstrate the relevance of their coursework to their midlevel education students, ultimately enhancing learning gains.

Of equal importance to their professional development, prospective teachers need …

The Imagination And The Real, Thomas Ryan Gothrup Apr 2009

The Imagination And The Real, Thomas Ryan Gothrup

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis challenges the sedentary nature of living vicariously through the television, whether it be watching sports or playing video games. Since the advent of professional sports spectators have become accustomed to stadiums stuffed with people cheering on their favorite teams. The television substitutes for this visceral experience and allows viewers to live surrogate lives without leaving the living room. Ultimately, I see this thesis as a social commentary on the impact of sports and media in our society. This project highlights the sociological implications of the loss of interpersonal contact perpetuated by media.

Women In Wargasm: The Politics Of Womenís Liberation In The Weather Underground Organization, Cyrana B. Wyker Apr 2009

Women In Wargasm: The Politics Of Womenís Liberation In The Weather Underground Organization, Cyrana B. Wyker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I examine women's participation in the violent revolutionary organization, Weatherman/Weather Underground. My attempt is to uncover Weatherman's view of women's liberation, their differences to the women's liberation movement and examine the practices implemented. I discuss Weatherman, more generally, in the context and circumstances of their emergence from the Students for a Democratic Society in the late sixties. Influenced by popular revolutionary thinkers Weatherman declared itself and its members revolutionaries dedicated to bringing about a socialist revolution in the United States through strategies of guerilla warfare. Weatherman's insistence on revolutionary violence situated masculinity and machismo within the center …

Investigating The Mind With Heller, Vonnegut, And O'Brien: Psychological Trauma And Narrative Structure In The American War Novel, Daniel Trump Apr 2009

Investigating The Mind With Heller, Vonnegut, And O'Brien: Psychological Trauma And Narrative Structure In The American War Novel, Daniel Trump

Theses & Honors Papers

The 'American war novel' is an exceedingly broad genre. If taken at its simplest form, it can encompass titles ranging from James Fenimore Cooper's The Spy to Tom Clancy's latest addition to his Rainbow Six series. Joseph Heller's Catch-22, Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, and Tim O'Brien's Going After Cacciato are novels that very simply could be filed away somewhere in that American war novel ether that exists between a high-school library and an airport bookstore, but that would be a disservice to Heller, Vonnegut, and O'Brien. What sets their novels apart from the general milieu of the American war novel …

Heroic Orual And The Tasks Of Psyche, Gwenyth Hood Apr 2009

Heroic Orual And The Tasks Of Psyche, Gwenyth Hood

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

In-depth exploration of Lewis’s Till We Have Faces, his retelling of the Psyche and Cupid myth from the viewpoint of one of Psyche’s sisters, Orual. Taking as her key the god’s admonition to Orual after she forces her sister to disobey him, “You also shall be Psyche,” Hood examines Orual’s transformations of herself and her society and the nature and meaning of the tasks she symbolically shares with her sister. An appendix details similarities and differences between the classical Latin sources and Lewis’s version.

The Thematic Organization Of Spirits In Bondage, Joe R. Christopher

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Detailed examination of each poem in Spirits in Bondage, using the young poet’s “Matter = Nature = Satan” equation (as expressed in letters to his friend Arthur Greeves) to explore the underlying themes of Lewis’s not just pre-conversion, but pre-theism “cycle of lyrics.” The contrast between beauty and evil, irreconcilable in this stage of Lewis’s theological development, is shown to be a major concern in this work, heavily influenced by his World War I experiences. An appendix details the matter of the poems rejected and replaced before publication.

Cultural Culinary Wisdom: Combating The Nutrition Transition, Alanna O'Neil Apr 2009

Cultural Culinary Wisdom: Combating The Nutrition Transition, Alanna O'Neil

Global Studies Student Scholarship

The nutrition transition is a rapidly developing global problem. The disparity between the rates of global obesity and malnutrition is diminishing. Westernization and industrialization are serious factors contributing to the global food and dietary epidemic. As a result, food cultures are threatened by dietary changes inflicted by Westernization. Moreover, rates of diet related non-communicable diseases are on the rise as never seen before. This study examines the problem of the nutrition transition through the context of the prevalence of food cultures, case studies, culinary recipes, dietary habits, and cultural transitions. Supporting this research is a dietary survey of study abroad …

Creek Schism: Seminole Genesis Revisited, Philip C. Hawkins Apr 2009

Creek Schism: Seminole Genesis Revisited, Philip C. Hawkins

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work reevaluates commonly accepted interpretations of Seminole ethnogenesis in light of recent scholarship and previously ignored sources from the Spanish archives. It argues that Seminole formation was largely a bi-product of a struggle between two opposing Lower Creek factions: the Creek "nationalists" and the ostensive Creek "partisans" of the British. This factional struggle became increasingly bitter during the French and Indian War and ultimately led to a schism whereby the ostensive "partisans" of the British colonized of the Alachua savanna in the early 1760s to become recognized as the first Florida Seminoles. This work also raises questions about the …

The Military Principles Of The Archduke Carl In The Context Of His Intellectual Antecedents And His Military Reality, Lee W. Eysturlid

Faculty Publications & Research

The Archduke Carl of Teschen, the premier commander of the Habsburg military between 1793 and 1809, is often misunderstood in his inherent conservatism as a leader, theorist and historian. Too often he is simply seen in the context of his looming contemporaries, Napoleon Bonaparte and Carl von Clausewitz. This paper will look to explore the key political, military and religious theories that the Archduke studied and the potential impact that can be seen in his work, both theoretical and in practice.

Time, Space, And The Question Of Heroism In Sertorius, Nina Ekstein Apr 2009

Time, Space, And The Question Of Heroism In Sertorius, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

This article examines the exceptional role Corneille gives to the dimensions of time and space in Sertorius, one of the playwright’s later tragedies. In contrast to Corneille’s general dramatic practice, in which the two dimensions are relatively neglected, here they are foregrounded and serve as a framework for Sertorius’s tragedy. His relationship to time—he is essentially a man of the past to whom the future will be denied—and to space—immobilized in Nertobridge while aching to return to Rome—restricts him and prevents forward movement in either realm. Furthermore, time and space provide a vital key for unraveling the thorny issue …

Interview With Jeremiah Wright, Arlen Parsa Apr 2009

Interview With Jeremiah Wright, Arlen Parsa

Chicago Anti-Apartheid Movement

Length: 175 minutes

Oral history interview of Jeremiah Wright by Arlen Parsa

Rev. Wright begins by describing his family, his “atypical” childhood, and his early aspirations to become a seminary professor. He explains the impact that the civil rights sit-ins had on his perspective and direction of his career path, attending college, joining the military, and entering the seminary. He explains how he became involved in the anti-Apartheid movement through his acquaintance with South African students in Chicago, his participation in TransAfrica and Commission for Racial Justice, and his involvement in divestment efforts within the churches. He reviews the history …

The Evangelical Sisterhood Of Mary: Profile Of A Protestant Monastic Order, George Faithful Apr 2009

The Evangelical Sisterhood Of Mary: Profile Of A Protestant Monastic Order, George Faithful

Collected Faculty Scholarship

It is not self-evident that there should be Protestant nuns. Yet the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary has existed in Germany for over sixty years. Why? How did the Sisterhood come to be? And what are the Sisters’ distinctive practices and beliefs? To answer these questions, I will provide a brief historical overview of the sisters’ founding, followed by a survey of the teachings of Mother Basilea, their preeminent founder, which I will augment with an analysis of the architecture of the sisters’ communities.
