This thesis explores the actors process for four productions in the University of South Carolina’s Theatre and Dance Department spanning from Winter of 2024 to Fall of 2025 and taking place as part of the MFA program in acting. These four productions – The Visit by Frederich Durrenmatt, directed by Craig Miller; Antigone by Sophocles, directed by Lauren Wilson; Mauritius by Theresa Rebeck, directed by Erica Tobolski; and The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, directed by Dustin Whitehead – form critical points in the MFA program of study, allowing for the practical application of techniques and approaches learned …

Recollection Of The Archaic Psyche: A Comparative Study Of Viacheslav Ivanov’S Realistic Symbolism And Carl Gustav Jung’S Analytical Psychology, Elizabeth Jay Wheless
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis reflects my three years at the University of South Carolina’s Master of Fine Arts in Acting program, including the roles I’ve played and shows I’ve acted in. The chapters include detailed accounts of my time acting as The Teacher in The Visit by Friedrich Dürrenmatt in March 2024, the Choragos in Antigone by Sophocles in October 2024, Mary in Mauritius by Theresa Rebeck in February 2025 and Gwendolen in The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde in November 2025. Each chapter has subchapters of “auditions and callbacks,” “rehearsals,” “performances,” and “lessons and conclusion.” This thesis is a …
Exploring Secular Jamaican Art Songs: A Performance Guide For Peter Ashbourne’S Fi Mi Love Have Lion Heart, Christine A.S. Powell-Thomas
Exploring Secular Jamaican Art Songs: A Performance Guide For Peter Ashbourne’S Fi Mi Love Have Lion Heart, Christine A.S. Powell-Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
Jamaican art song remains underrepresented in mainstream classical training. As a result, singers may lack exposure to its linguistic and cultural nuances. This dissertation addresses this gap by providing a performance guide specific to Peter Ashbourne’s (b. 1950-) Fi Mi Love Have Lion Heart, a set of five art songs. Attention is given to matters of text delivery, rhythmic clarity, stylistic character, and the balance between authenticity and vocal freedom. In doing so, the study honors both the classical vocal tradition and the cultural context from which these works emerge.
This document provides performance practices, interpretation and diction, including an …
Architecture As Frozen Music: An Original Wind Ensemble Work Exploring Architectural Metaphors In Contemporary Music, Leighannah J. Turner
Architecture As Frozen Music: An Original Wind Ensemble Work Exploring Architectural Metaphors In Contemporary Music, Leighannah J. Turner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Architecture has long served as a source of inspiration for Western art music composers from the Early Renaissance through the Neoclassical period. While the relationship between music and architecture has been widely studied, much of the existing research focuses on traditional mediums such as the symphony orchestra. This project explores the concept of music as “frozen architecture” – introduced by Friedrich Schelling – and the metaphorical correlations as described by Vitruvius and Lupishko, applying these concepts to the contemporary medium of the wind ensemble through my original composition. My work integrates the architectural principles proposed by Vitruvius and Lupishko while …

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Among the varied themes that African fiction explores, politics and governance remain the most dominant across generations. Writing under oppressive and exploitative colonial administrations, the first generation of African storytellers used fiction to highlight the injustice of colonial rule. With fidelity to the African proverb that says the tales of hunting will always glorify the hunter until the lion learns to tell its own stories, African writers also used fiction to push back against one-sided, toxic narratives about the continent. After independence, when rulers of the new republics continued the colonial legacies of oppression, inflicting untold hardships on their citizens, …
Literary Colonization And Locating Avenues Of Subversion In Bobby Flores-Villasis' Suite Bergamasque, Michael Aaron C. Gomez
Literary Colonization And Locating Avenues Of Subversion In Bobby Flores-Villasis' Suite Bergamasque, Michael Aaron C. Gomez
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
This paper examines four short stories included in the collection titled Suite Bergamasque, written by multi-awarded Negrense playwright and fictionist Bobby Flores-Villasis. A materialist reading situates Villasis within the canon of Philippine literature in English and analyzes the way his stories formally render the class antagonisms of history through the interconnected narratives of Dumaguete City’s sugar elite. Finally, this paper also contends that the political imagination of Villasis’ work exhorts contemporary Dumaguete writers to critically examine inherited hagiographies in order to describe fully the conditions that have shaped the city into its contemporary formation, particularly the phenomena of gentrification …
Assessing Aesthetic Responsiveness Among Patients In A Free Clinic Setting, Jack E. Pitts
Assessing Aesthetic Responsiveness Among Patients In A Free Clinic Setting, Jack E. Pitts
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Art therapy has been increasingly recognized as a complementary intervention in healthcare settings, with demonstrated benefits for stress reduction and overall biopsychosocial well-being (Liu 2022; Magsamen, 2014). However, limited research has explored aesthetic engagement within medically underserved and economically disadvantaged populations. This study uses the Aesthetic Responsiveness Assessment to examine the relationship between art and patients receiving care at the Central Virginia Free Clinic in Lynchburg. The survey consists of 14 Likert-scale questions assessing individuals’ cumulative aptitude across three domains: aesthetic appreciation, intense aesthetic experience, and creative behavior. There was an additional 15th qualitative question that assessed the desire for …

Investigating The Interlanguage Fossilization Of English Writing In Foreign Language Acquisition, Ammar Abdul Fattah Habeeb
Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts
Interlanguage fossilization represents a common phenomenon in Foreign/Second language acquisition. The current study attempted to investigate the students’ writing compositions to reveal if interlanguage fossilization occurred or not. A diagnostic test has been used to collect the data. A sample of this study was chosen randomly from 20 EFL students of the sixth year preparatory schools in the academic year (2023-2024). The findings of this study displayed that two kinds of interlanguage fossilization are found and achieved by students. Morphological fossilization and syntactical fossilization. Historic Shrouds: A New Voice For Shakespearean Women, Ashleigh E. Weinstock
Historic Shrouds: A New Voice For Shakespearean Women, Ashleigh E. Weinstock
Global Tides
This article presents, and seeks to remedy, the argument that Shakespeare’s female characters are deprived of equal representation as complex humans through narrative gaps, action relegated to offstage scenes, and reduced opportunities for direct-to-audience speech, mirroring the social hierarchies of early modern gender, which continue to be reflected in modern society.
While this critique is not new, this essay argues that the criticism of these theatrical inequalities is insufficient to remedy their harms. Instead, this author proposes a performance-based, generative model of restorative justice termed the Historic Shroud, which seeks to give voice to sidelined female characters by placing …
