A Study Of The Modern Progressive Movement, Anthony Watson Apr 2021

A Study Of The Modern Progressive Movement, Anthony Watson

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

From 1972 to 2020, the progressive wing of the Democratic party has evolved and adapted to follow a changing American society that looks drastically different today than the one that overwhelmingly rejected George McGovern in 1972 in favor of President Nixon. From being blamed for dragging down Democratic candidates through the 1970s and '80s to being sidelined by the "New Democrat" movement headlined by President's Clinton and Obama to resurging back into popularity in 2016 led by Bernard "Bernie" Sander's run for the Democratic nomination, the movement is now as strong as ever. This research looks at how progressives within …

I’m Going to Go Back There Someday: Reading, Writing, and Directing Hauntings in Four American Plays

In this personal and formal research essay, I discuss and compare the plays A Raisin in the Sun, Fefu and Her Friends, Angels in America, and I’m Going to Go Back There Someday (my own work, which I am also directing in partial fulfillment for Honors in Theater and Dance). These plays all bring forth hauntings, despite and in some cases because of their differences in content and style—ranging from realism to the avant-garde. I base my discussion …

Preferred Narratives And Their Impact On Historical Memory: An Examination Through Comparison Of Twentieth Century Pandemics, Renee Semple Apr 2021

Preferred Narratives And Their Impact On Historical Memory: An Examination Through Comparison Of Twentieth Century Pandemics, Renee Semple

Honors Scholar Theses

Societal response to a crisis and the narratives that emerge from the event(s) often vary and oppose one another. A narrative can be considered a point of view or a lens that is often cultivated through experiences and carries its own tone while telling events. This thesis compares the narratives that emerged from both the 1918 and 1957 influenza pandemics. Examining the 1918 influenza pandemic reveals both a public and a private narrative, in which the public narrative is the preferred out of the two. Filled with optimism, the preferred public narrative focused on moving forward and furthering scientific research—a …

Tinjauan Kawin Hamil Dalam Perspektif Hukum Islam, Fahrul Fauzi

Journal of Islamic Law Studies

Marriage is a spiritual bond between a man and a woman as husband and wife with the aim of forming a happy and eternal family (household) based on the Godhead of the Almighty. Basically, in the opinion of some scholars from the origin of the law of marriage if connected with al-ahkam al-khamsah is permissibility or ibahah. But marriage as a condition to meet the needs of physical life (biological needs) is often bypassed. The fact that there is currently increasingly widespread premarital sex. One of the effects of premarital sex is pregnant out of wedlock. The practice in …

Pollen-Vegetation Relationships In Upper Tampa Bay, Jaime E. Zolik Apr 2021

Pollen-Vegetation Relationships In Upper Tampa Bay, Jaime E. Zolik

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Archaeological and environmental studies reveal prehistoric human-environmental interactions and resolve baseline conditions for estuaries. Paleoecological proxies, such as pollen, aid archeologists in investigating past vegetation dynamics and human impacts. An issue with collecting this information today is that most present-day estuaries in Tampa Bay have been succeeded by mangrove communities and do not represent baseline vegetation dynamics. This is believed to be the consequences of widespread mosquito ditching. As a result of this, the once complex mangrove, salt marsh, juncus marsh, salt prairie, and coastal upland mosaics were converted to monodominant mangrove forests. Upper Tampa Bay (UTB) park contains some …

"Woodburn, Texas: A Study In Southern Gothic", Katherine Stone Apr 2021

"Woodburn, Texas: A Study In Southern Gothic", Katherine Stone

Honors Theses

My thesis, titled “Woodburn, Texas: A Study in Southern Gothic”, is a short story separated into four main sections as well as an introductory piece and conclusion that are separate from the other sections. The four main sections are separated by four prose poems ¾one for each season.

Separating the sections are four prose poems that follow the seasons. They allow for further access into the history and mindset of the people of this seemingly quiet and slow town as well as the Southern mindset in general.

Both the poems and the regular prose are told in the first person …

Oregon's Racial Purity Regime: The Influence Of International Scientific Racism On Law Enforcement, Legislation, Public Health, And Incarceration In Portland, Oregon During The Victorian And Progressive Eras (1851-1917), Katherine N. Bush Apr 2021

Oregon's Racial Purity Regime: The Influence Of International Scientific Racism On Law Enforcement, Legislation, Public Health, And Incarceration In Portland, Oregon During The Victorian And Progressive Eras (1851-1917), Katherine N. Bush

Dissertations and Theses

In 1983, the Oregon State legislature repealed the eugenic sterilization law that had been in use for 60 years. Initially passed during the Progressive era, this law epitomized the State's legacy of surveilling, policing, caging, and inflicting brutality on marginalized and racialized communities who were deemed dangerous, threatening, or contagious. Public health leaders, political officials, law enforcement authorities, and private charities worked together as a multivalent system to maintain racial purity in the State. This racial purity regime drew upon a legacy of international pseudo-scientific racism to justify and bolster policies, legislation, and practices that targeted impoverished communities, people of …

A Scientist Observes Florida: 1870, John Large, Jr. Apr 2021

A Scientist Observes Florida: 1870, John Large, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

No roll of nineteenth century America’s eminent men of science would be complete without the name of Jared Potter Kirtkurd. His noteworthy career was no less of an ornament to the historical recollection of northeastern Ohio than to the scientific fraternity of the country as a whole. Kirtland’s endeavors led him into many areas of public enlightenment. Born in Connecticut in 1793, of deeply-rooted New England ancestry, young Jared had shown an early enthusiasm for horticulture and natural history. At the age of fifteen years he made an original scientific contribution. Later in 1815, at Yale Medical College, he received …

The Soteriological Necessity Of A Full Incarnation And Its Implications For Believers, Addison Yates Apr 2021

The Soteriological Necessity Of A Full Incarnation And Its Implications For Believers, Addison Yates

Tenor of Our Times

At the center of Christian theology lies the study of Jesus the Christ, his being, and his work. Differing beliefs about Jesus’ divinity and humanity were a source of early Christian controversies, and the first ecumenical councils addressed these Christological controversies by affirming that Jesus was both fully human and fully divine. Though this doctrine is widely accepted in modern Christian theology, many practicing Christians, particularly those who are unfamiliar with Christian history, may never have explored Jesus’ nature in his incarnation or considered its implications. The aim of this work is twofold: to establish that a full incarnation of …

Exhibitions Of Impact: Introducing The Special Issue, David H. Lee

Publications and Research

The Exhibitions of Impact (EOI) special issue of American Behavioral Scientist consists of six articles from authors in communication studies and rhetoric, public health, medicine and bioethics, memory studies, and art therapy. Each article profiles some exhibition or memorial related to a pressing social issue, including gun violence, racist terrorism, domestic violence, religious fundamentalism, corporations selling harmful products, and how society treats those regarded as cognitively and behaviorally different. First, examples from today’s headlines show a global outcry over racist monuments and artifacts, and a global pandemic, which casts doubt on the future of exhibitions. Historical examples and explanatory concepts …

Sexuality And Borders In Right Wing Times: A Conversation, Alyosxa Tudor, Miriam Ticktin Apr 2021

Sexuality And Borders In Right Wing Times: A Conversation, Alyosxa Tudor, Miriam Ticktin

Publications and Research

We respond to prompts about the relationships between race, migration, and sexuality, as these intersecting differences have been forced into the same frame by the violent practices of right-wing regimes, and brought into relief by Covid19. Even as we have long known that sexual politics are a way to govern bodies, and to distribute uneven states of vulnerability, we are seeing new incarnations of government. What we aim to point out is how people who are seen as “different” are being attacked, maimed, dispossessed and murdered. But perhaps more importantly, we insist on the specific nature of right-wing times because …

Fables Agreed Upon: A Comparative Study Of New Historicism And Alternate History, Feng Li, Yitzhak Lewis Apr 2021

Fables Agreed Upon: A Comparative Study Of New Historicism And Alternate History, Feng Li, Yitzhak Lewis

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

New Historicism and alternate history raise similar questions regarding history and ideology. New Historicism reads every text as an alternate history narrative, while the narrative mode in alternate history can inspire a nuanced understanding of the critical positions promoted by New Historicism. The paper offers a comparative study of the two in terms of their conceptualizations of historical narrative, intertextuality, narrativity, non-linear structure and spatiality. It seeks to create dialogues between different voices in both the critical theory and the literary genre with respect to their attention to mundane matters, their allusions to the present and projections of the future, …

Pentecostal Culture, Or Pentecost Of Culture?: Transformation, Paradigms, Power, Unity, Dimitri Sala Ofm

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

This article will explore the relationship between Pentecostals and the broader cultures we inhabit. It will acknowledge that, like all religion, Pentecostalism can tend to create a culture within itself (a “Pentecostal culture”), which at times effects a withdrawal of its adherents from the surrounding world. This necessitates a conscious decision, first to navigate away from that tendency where it exists, and then to define a positive role for Pentecostalism within culture, viz., the transformation of civilization (a “Pentecost of culture”). Thereby the article proposes a more extensive definition of the baptism of the Spirit, looks at how God is …

Those Thrice Marked By Time: The Significance Of The Last Known Survivor, Their Death, And Our Remembrance, Michael Tofte Apr 2021

Those Thrice Marked By Time: The Significance Of The Last Known Survivor, Their Death, And Our Remembrance, Michael Tofte

Theses

Following Adam Zarakov, the last known survivor is a significant figure and a representative of a larger type that is under-considered. Last known survivors are ubiquitous in fictional media and how history is told. Some survivors like Frank Buckles are given lavish state funerals with participation of strangers. Yet, this under-analysis is concerning as the 21st century will likely feature the recognition of last known survivors of many significant 20th century events. I offer one attempt of addressing this lacuna.

The first aim is to motivate philosophical interest in the phenomenon of the last known survivor. I present …
