Planet-Oriented Design: A Proposal For New Ethical Transitions In Design Education, Martin Tironi, Marcos Chilet Oct 2023

Planet-Oriented Design: A Proposal For New Ethical Transitions In Design Education, Martin Tironi, Marcos Chilet

IASDR Conference Series

We live through a socio-environmental, socio-political and socio-technical crisis that forces us to ask ourselves urgent questions about our planet. The article explores the need to transition from human-centred design to forms of design with a terrestrial vision. Based on the experience of the School of Design of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, it explores the potential of Planet-Oriented design as an articulator of new practices and a new ethic of teaching and doing design. The recent social phenomena - such as the Chilean social uprising of 2019 - added to the planetary crises in which we live opened …

Plant Playmate: Exploring Effects Of Interactive Plants For Mental Wellness Microbreaks During Knowledge-Based Work, Bingjie Gao, Siran Niu, Xiaoyu Zhang, Xiaoqing Sun, Xipei Ren

IASDR Conference Series

Work stress is a crucial issue related to personal health and work performance. It has been proved that using plants in office is helpful for stress relief. In this paper, we present the design and evaluation of Plant Playmate - a smart plant that can augment human-plant interactions with interactive lights, anthropomorphic expressions and virtual credits for stress relief. A within-subject experiment was conducted with 18 participants in work environments, to compare practical effects of Plant Playmate with an ordinary plant. Participants’ stress levels were assessed through electrodermal data and self-assessment Manikin (SAM). We also collected their experience through user …

From Bio-Inspired Design To Microbiology-Inspired Design: A Conceptual Model-Based Case Study On Biological Materials Informed By Emotions, Nurul 'Ayn Ahmad Sayuti, Zidong Lin, Bjorn Sommer

IASDR Conference Series

Bio-inspired design techniques utilise or adapt natural components into designs or technologies to solve diverse challenges. This project focuses on the conceptualisation of the application of micro-level biological materials in furniture designs. Previous studies that investigated why designers incorporate biological materials into their designs informed the assessment of potential consumers’ perspective and opinion on designs incorporating biological materials following an emotional design approach. A survey involving over 200 participants revealed that biological materials closely related to biotechnology elicited significantly less positive emotional responses compared to more familiar household material, such as decorative plants. Therefore, this work explores new perspectives for …

Convergence Research And Participatory Design Of A Study Furniture System For Small Living Environments, Tulio Maximo, Chi Hang Paul Lo, Wen Zhan Oct 2023

Convergence Research And Participatory Design Of A Study Furniture System For Small Living Environments, Tulio Maximo, Chi Hang Paul Lo, Wen Zhan

IASDR Conference Series

With limited space, lack of natural lighting and restrictive internal layout, children living in subdivided units and other similar small living spaces are often left with no choice but to study, play and sleep on the bed for a prolonged period. Such environmental conditions often damage children’s development, particularly their eyesight, muscles, and bones, and harm their concentration, self-worth, and, thus, academic attainment. Early interventions are of the utmost urgency. This project adopted continued convergence research collaboration and participatory design to understand critical issues and develop and test interventions to improve the studying environment of children living in subdivided units …

Sync: Novel Bci Design For Neural Synchrony, Connectedness, And Empathy, Yaara Schattner, Yoav Zamir, Niv Siton, Karin Kimel, Noa Zecharia, Noam Goldway Goldway

IASDR Conference Series

Recent years have shown a remarkable advancement in making neural technologies accessible, transcending the confines of clinical settings, with companies introducing neural hardware once limited to specialized environments. Concurrently, scientific research has made significant strides in demonstrating the effectiveness of neurofeedback as a closed-loop system, enabling individuals to regulate neural signals consciously. While studies focus on individual-based learning, emerging evidence suggests that NF can facilitate neural synchronicity among multiple individuals. To optimize NF and achieve favorable neuro-behavioral outcomes, recent investigations propose integration of immersive interfaces that provide a holistic and meaningful learning experience. However, a disconnect between scientists and designers …

Pedagogy Of Experimental Design: Scientific Research Methods In Architectural Education, Assia Crawford Oct 2023

Pedagogy Of Experimental Design: Scientific Research Methods In Architectural Education, Assia Crawford

IASDR Conference Series

Bio-design is a growing field in architecture that focuses on integrating biological processes and systems into the design of buildings and urban environments. This approach draws inspiration from nature and seeks to create sustainable and regenerative structures that can adapt to changing environmental conditions. Architecture students are increasingly becoming involved in the design and execution of bio-design experiments, leveraging their interdisciplinary knowledge and design skills to create innovative solutions that integrate biology and design principles. This allows students to explore new avenues of research and to develop a deeper understanding of the intersection between design and the natural world. This …

Exploiting Co-Design, Game Thinking And Citizen Science In A Workshop-Like Experience For Stimulating Reflections With Teens, Chiara Ceccarini, Tommaso Zambon, Catia Prandi Oct 2023

Exploiting Co-Design, Game Thinking And Citizen Science In A Workshop-Like Experience For Stimulating Reflections With Teens, Chiara Ceccarini, Tommaso Zambon, Catia Prandi

IASDR Conference Series

Teenagers are constantly overwhelmed with information and activities, both considering school activities and their free time. How can we actively engage them in educational experiences to stimulate discussions and reflections about social issues? To answer this question, we conceived a workshop-like experience where we put into practice three well know methods and concepts, such as co-design, citizen science, and game thinking. The final output of the activity is a low-fidelity prototype of a mobile application, co-designed by a group of students. By taking advantage of open-ended making to engage participants in the ideation of a gamified/game-based citizen science application, we …

Review Of Wild Sound: Maryanne Amacher And The Tenses Of Audible Life, By Amy Cimini, Charissa Noble Oct 2023

Review Of Wild Sound: Maryanne Amacher And The Tenses Of Audible Life, By Amy Cimini, Charissa Noble

Music: Faculty Scholarship

The first book dedicated to the life and work of composer Maryanne Amacher (1938- 2009), Wild Sound: Maryanne Amacher and the Tenses of Audible Life begins in medias res. Author Amy Cimini introduces us to Amacher by peering into one of her brainstorming sessions, depicting an imaginative scene set in the 1990s at Mills College. Cimini describes Amacher seated at her desk, passionately inscribing a “big quote” (announced in “heavy black Sharpie,” Cimini notes) from feminist scholar Donna Haraway’s Simians, Cyborgs and Women (1991): “I want a feminist writing….” Then, as Amacher ponders the quote’s implications for her own creative …

Chapter Viii — Derailed Modernization: The Derg’S Phase, Messay Kebede Oct 2023

Chapter Viii — Derailed Modernization: The Derg’S Phase, Messay Kebede

Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments

The cultural trait making higher social positions into contested temporary occupations (see Chapter III on idil) should have found, in the modernization process of evicting outdated, anti-modern occupants, an even better opportunity to vent itself. In the traditional system, power struggles opposed ambitious individuals who shared common values and a mutual understanding of social life. The struggle did not go beyond the act of changing places in a fixed social framework. However, as a result of the impact of exogenous modern ideas, the struggle shifted to a confrontation between elites with different ideologies and social programs. These elites want to …

Chapter Ix — Derailed Modernization: The Ethnonationalist Phase, Messay Kebede Oct 2023

Chapter Ix — Derailed Modernization: The Ethnonationalist Phase, Messay Kebede

Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments

The last chapter concluded with the generalized expectation that the fall of the Derg would set in motion some form of democratization dismantling the wide-ranging restrictions of the existing socialist system, even if there was uncertainty about the real political program of the victorious Tigrean insurgents. Despite promises of democratization, it did not take long for people to realize that Ethiopia was heading for yet another version of hegemonic rule, this one replacing the class ideology of the previous regime with ethnonationalism. As though a curse were on it, Ethiopia’s modernization will once more stumble over an ideology and a …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The hacker ethos in the positive sense is about the ability to deconstruct and reconstruct information systems. Hacking starts with reconceptualizing libraries. Libraries are now beyond the book. As libraries evolve into a new sort of space --still a space for research, learning and study-- but also for community engagement and collaboration, library exhibits present a unique opportunity for both collaborating exhibitors and library users. Artists engage with libraries creatively through artist residencies, installations, using discarded library materials in their work, collaborative workshops, digital collections remixing, performances and more. Hacking the Library will present artwork that highlights the intersecting values …

Preventative Mental Health Measures For Ministerial Leaders, Claire Phypers Oct 2023

Preventative Mental Health Measures For Ministerial Leaders, Claire Phypers

Selected Honors Theses

Pastoral care and responsibilities come with a particular weight that can feel overwhelming at times for those engaged in ministry. In a world where mental health seems to be making all the headlines, there appears to be an overall lack of conversation surrounding the emotional well-being of clergy. This thesis aims to create a more holistic perception of mental health among ministerial leaders and pinpoint preventative measures that can be put in place to protect the hearts and minds of pastors as they fulfill the callings on their lives. In conducting this research, a mixed-method survey was completed by twenty-one …

Campus Building, Shilo Virginia Previti, Grant Mcmillan, Samuel Amendolar

Digital Press Books

This book celebrates Merrifield Hall on the campus of the University of North Dakota. This century-old building is now enduring a radical renovation designed to keep it relevant for the next generation of students on the UND campus.

The editors’ goal with this book was both to respect Merrifield Hall’s past and look forward to its now in-process future. It is our hope that this book will offer a space of thoughts, memories, fragments, criticisms, and jokes for all those who have walked the halls of this building and for all those who may one day dance—intellectually and materially—its halls, …

Fauna As Fieldworkers: An Analysis On The Use Of Animals As A Form Of Organic Weed And Pest Management In Modern Viticulture, Mariana Del Carmen Campano

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Recent data on the current state of pesticide use in global agriculture suggests serious concerns over significant overuse and negative effects on both environmental and human health, and current trends only suggest continued increases in future global pesticide use. Without prompt, large-scale intervention, this global abuse of chemical pesticides spells significant threats of not only continued harm to global health and environmental quality, but also to the long term viability of agricultural lands and the growing threat of pesticide resistant insects and weeds. Various methods have been explored in the realm of integrated pest management (IPM), but a current lack …

Need-Oriented Evangelism: Encountering, Embracing, And Experiencing God, Petr Cincala, Allison Sauceda Oct 2023

Need-Oriented Evangelism: Encountering, Embracing, And Experiencing God, Petr Cincala, Allison Sauceda

Faculty Publications

This article provides a fresh perspective on evangelism by reflecting a belief in the Triune God--the source of saving truth and loving community. Mission is part of God’s nature; he is the ultimate Missionary. Mission happens naturally whenever children of God intentionally invite and facilitate God’s presence. Over time, the word “evangelism" has become contaminated by myths, a false understanding of God, and unpleasant religious experiences and practices. Genuine evangelism addresses the most burning issues of people’s lives and should be treated as such. True evangelism involves caring about, praying for, and sharing with people. The practical part of this …

Special Publication--KGS

Big Bone Lick is the birthplace of vertebrate paleontology in the Western Hemisphere and has a long and celebrated history in the exploration of the American colonial frontier and of the early United States. Notable European scientists of the 18th century such as Buffon, Cuvier, and Hunter discussed the fossils found there. Prominent Americans of the time, such as Boone, Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson are also part of the site’s history. It is the type locality for several extinct late Pleistocene megafaunal mammals, most notably the iconic American Mastodon, who were attracted to the area by salt licks dictated by …

George C. Caldwell (1834-1907): American Agricultural Chemist, Pat Munday

Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Articles

George Caldwell served as president of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 1892. Prior to this time, the ACS had been a rather parochial New York City based organization. In 1890, the constituency of the ACS expressed its desire to become a truly national body. Toward this end, it forged closer ties with the Chemical Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and merged with the Chemical Section in 1891. As Caldwell had been active with the AAAS group for several years previous to this merger, his election to the presidency of the ACS can be …

Review Essay: Enjoyment And Ideology Surplus-Enjoyment: A Guide For The Non-Perplexed Slavoj Žižek. London: Bloomsbury Academic. 2022. Pp. 400., Edward Sankowski, Betty J. Harris

International Dialogue

Slavoj Žižek’s Surplus-Enjoyment-A Guide for the Non-Perplexed is a difficult book. Reading it requires a different approach from what is usual with what seems to us more standardized philosophical or social scientific prose. Our approach initially at least no doubt assumes as our starting point a deploying of our shared norms, shaped by our backgrounds as U.S. based scholars aiming to advance dialogue with Žižek and some of the wide variety of authors with whom Žižek himself engages.
