A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Lack Of Baptist Church Participation In Seminole County, Florida, Ismael Melendez

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This phenomenological study explores the reasons for a lack of participation in in-person Baptist churches and the rise of participation in online Baptist churches in Seminole County, Florida. The theory guiding this study was Martin Heidegger’s hermeneutical framework which focuses on the commonality of experiences. Heidegger believed that to arrive at the essence of a phenomenon a researcher must go through the revisionary process of what Heidegger termed the Hermeneutic Circle. The principal research question in this study explored existing relationship(s) between in-person and online Baptist church leaders and how such relationship(s) contributed to a lack of church participation. The …

Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments

This book examines and theoretically articulates the various facets and crucial phases of Ethiopia’s encounter with the modern world and the challenges its efforts to modernize faced during the course of three consecutive yet highly divergent political regimes. These phases roughly correspond to Haile Selassie’s and post-Haile Selassie’s Ethiopia, with the post-period spreading over two milestones, namely, the revolutionary shift of the Provisional Military Administrative Council (the Derg) and the no less critical reshaping of the Ethiopian political system by an ethnonationalist agenda subsequent to the Tigray People's Liberation Front’s (TPLF) seizure of state power. Despite their drastic differences, a …

Chapter I — On Theories Of Modernization, Messay Kebede

Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments

The vast literature pertaining to development and modernity discloses philosophical questions that instigate the controversies dividing the various theories of modernization. Of these philosophical issues, the most crucial and recurrent is the question of the prime factor or mover of modernization. The reason for the philosophical issue of primacy derives from the fact that modernization involves cultural as well as socioeconomic changes. Following the philosophical distinction between the spiritual and the material, the clash between the two basic schools of idealism and materialism frames the philosophical approach around the question of knowing whether the prime cause of modernization is cultural …

The Animal In The Wild In Hwang Sun-Mi’S The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly, Sarah Yoon Oct 2023

The Animal In The Wild In Hwang Sun-Mi’S The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly, Sarah Yoon

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Hwang Sun-mi’s The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly has become a contemporary classic children’s story in Korea since its original publication in 2000. Since then, the story has been translated and redesigned with new illustrations in almost thirty different countries (Y. Kim). The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly centers on a hen that raises a duckling as her “baby,” with the story drawing upon a rich reservoir of cultural associations between humans and nature in East Asian traditions. In this story, the hen leaves the human-dominated barnyard, based on profit, exploitation, and competition, for a reconnection with moral …

Are All Pokémons Created Equal? Assessing The Value-Neutrality Of Pokémon Tcg Design Process, Minoru Matsui Oct 2023

Are All Pokémons Created Equal? Assessing The Value-Neutrality Of Pokémon Tcg Design Process, Minoru Matsui

IASDR Conference Series

The cultural evolution research program is useful for quantitatively explaining complex creative processes such as design. From a design studies perspective, its variation generation process is particularly intriguing. However, cultural transmission theorists have long modelled the process as a random novelty invention, far from the real-life modern design process. Here we show an instance of such a deviation, examining how the design process and its resulting frequencies of Pokémon TCG variants deviate from a neutral model in which an agent randomly selects and introduces cultural variants to the population from the design pool.

Using Ar Hmd In Exhibition: Effects Of Guidance Methods And Spatial Relative Positions, Kexing Wang, Zhenlin Song, Xuanhui Liu, Pei Chen, Lingyun Sun

IASDR Conference Series

AR devices have the potential to augment the space of exhibitions, provide flexible and diverse interactions between visitors and exhibits, and enhance the viewing experience. To keep the virtual objects from blocking the real exhibits, the virtual objects may appear out of view and cause extra searching efforts for the visitors. Current studies have provided multiple guidance methods to deal with the out-of-view problem, yet they haven’t provided specific advice in the exhibition scenario. This research conducted a within-subject experiment in an exhibition to compare three kinds of guidance methods (i.e., arrow, radar, and spatial sound) with relative positions covering …

Design Characteristics In Outdoor Seating Areas – A Study Of Coffee Shops In Hong Kong And Copenhagen, Mia Münster Oct 2023

Design Characteristics In Outdoor Seating Areas – A Study Of Coffee Shops In Hong Kong And Copenhagen, Mia Münster

IASDR Conference Series

Transitional spaces, or ‘in-between’ areas, those connecting the interior and exterior spaces of shops, cafés and restaurants–these are spheres of interaction between commercial and public spaces. In them, through the use of design elements, stores communicate the nature of their offerings, their services, and their values to the outside world; consumers, in turn, decode these elements as a part of their decision to patronize the store. Increasingly, these transitional spaces incorporate areas for outdoor seating. In these areas, parts of the surrounding neighborhood are pulled into the store’s sphere, while the store’s sphere is simultaneously projected into the surrounding area. …

IASDR Conference Series

Circular makerspaces have the potential to contribute to sustainable development goals (SDGs) by promoting circular-making activities such as reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling. However, community building is essential for maintaining a circular makerspace, which requires engaging the makers and future users in circular-making activities. In this paper, we argue that involving locals in the design of circular makerspaces can facilitate community building and support makers' sense of belonging to the space. We present the experience of involving citizens in establishing circular makerspaces in seven European cities as part of the EU-funded H2020 project, [Project Name]. We developed a technique, called …

More Than Human Empathy: A Caring Approach To Ecosystemic Design, Mariana Pestana Oct 2023

More Than Human Empathy: A Caring Approach To Ecosystemic Design, Mariana Pestana

IASDR Conference Series

This paper argues for a caring approach to design based on more-than-human empathy. It proposes that such an empathic turn can provide a useful framework for eco-systemic thinking and practice in design, because it takes into consideration the wellbeing and the rights of people but also that of non-human bodies. To do that, this paper reports on a study concerning the conception and delivery of a design Biennial, entirely created and experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which gathered thinkers, practitioners, researchers and community groups to collectively discuss, scrutinise and rehearse the role of design in a post-anthropocentric, more-than-human paradigm. For …

Co-Creating Narratives Of Usefulness, Elisa Cardamone

IASDR Conference Series

Health and social care are moving increasingly towards digital platforms and greater knowledge of people’s lifestyles and habits through numbers (Sharon 2016, 2017; Sharon & Zandbergen 2017; Rooksby et al. 2014; Swan 2013). However, among ageing populations, digital devices often enter households just to be forgotten in cupboards due to their lack of “usefulness” (Kim et al. 2022; Spann and Stewart 2018). Research shows that people aged 65 and older tend to use fewer technologies and to do so less frequently than younger individuals (Smith 2014). How can we empathise with the lived experience of ageing populations, designing devices that …

Design Intervention To Aid Young Indians In Identifying Triggers Of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (Gad), Nilanjana Bairagi, Ajithsenb Selvadhas, Sowndarya Acharya

IASDR Conference Series

Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is an emotional and fear-based, recurrent response to a perceived or real threat. It causes difficulty in dealing with every-day experiences. It afflicts 13.9% of the urban residents in India and requires a proactive approach to coping. GAD is not caused by stress but rather is sensitive to stress. Varying stimuli lead to automatic, unexpected and intense reactions called triggers. Awareness about triggers helps one understand their emotional thresholds and supports self-management. The existing literature provides a multi-variant perspective about nudges that cause anxiety. However, localised probing is minimal in India due to a lack of …

In recent years, analogies have been widely used in the design process as an effective means of accelerating product innovation. This study investigates the spontaneous use of analogies in conceptual design. We used the protocol approach to analyse differences in designers' use of analogies during the three stages of the conceptual design process (exploration, development and forming). The findings show that designers' analogy tasks and design tasks differ significantly in the proportion of design processes involving analogy. Their distribution also reflects the more frequent use of analogies in the exploratory and developmental phases of the designer's design process. This will …
