The Origin Of Property In Land: Paul Vinogradoff And The Late Xixth Century English Historians, Caroline Phillips Stoel Jul 1973

The Origin Of Property In Land: Paul Vinogradoff And The Late Xixth Century English Historians, Caroline Phillips Stoel

Dissertations and Theses

One of the problems which has intrigued English historians for over a hundred years is that of the position of the common man in early England. Was he a freeman working land held communally by the village, or was he a serf laboring upon the land of an overlord? Since this question of freedom is inextricably interwoven with landholding concepts the problem may also be stated another way: Did private property in land exist from the earliest times, or is that institution the result of centuries of appropriation by individuals of land originally belonging to the commmunity as a whole? …

Contributions Of Peter Pallas To Science And Exploration In Russia, Robert C. Parker

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents an account of a prominent eighteenth-century European naturalist, Peter Pallas (1741-1811), in the setting to which he contributed his scientific talents--the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. A complete outline of Pallas' life is presented for purposes of continuity, but the heart of the thesis is presented in chapters four and five, which combined, relate the major features of Pallas' career in Russia. These two chapters are set against pertinent background material, most of which is involved with the institution itself which supported Pallas. The St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences is surveyed in its origin and development in …

How It Works Out: The Women's Studies Graduate, Nancy Jo Hoffman

Women's Studies Quarterly

We're all so busy developing our own women's studies programs, creating new curriculum, hassling over funding, over internal governance and community-related programs, that most of us rarely have time to ask how women's studies affects the work lives of students once they leave the university for full-time participation in the real anti-feminist world. But a program that has been functioning for several years produces graduates: what are they up to? Historically, women in America have been the temporaries in the labor force—though one can be temporary 40 hours a week, for 40 years of one's life. Has women's studies begun …

Women's Studies Quarterly

As the University of Hawaii seeks to cut its budget and its position count, Women's Studies at the Manoa campus can only hope that its modest requirements, low profile, absence of an administrative head, and experience in developing within the most precarious of situations may allow it to survive. None of the faculty have tenure; only two out of eight have career ladder positions; three of our faculty will not know until late summer whether they have even part-time jobs; one has been fired; and the rest have job security for one more year.

Women's Studies Programs, The Feminist Press

Women's Studies Quarterly

The programs in Women's Studies listed below are interdisciplinary: i.e., they combine courses in literature, language, or culture, with work in sociology, anthropology, economics, political science, history, philosophy, psychology, biology, and related fields. Some programs offer minors, others award the B.A., still others the M.A. Programs listed without a specific label offer a roster of elective courses. Where no chairperson is listed, either the program is still in the process of organization or it has chosen to function through a committee, rather than a single individual.

Closeup: Women's Studies At The College Of New Rochelle, Katherine Henderson

Women's Studies Quarterly

In the fall of 1973, the College of New Rochelle will offer an interdisciplinary major in Women's Studies. Student and faculty enthusiasm and a sympathetic administration have made possible the rapid expansion of the program from two courses in the fall of 1971 to eight courses this year. By the fall of next year, eight departments will participate in the program through course offerings, and tutorials will be available in five other departments.

From The Tide Pool To The Stars : A Study Of The Evolution Of John Steinbeck's Attitude Towards Good And Evil, Karen Wallace Bondonno Jun 1973

From The Tide Pool To The Stars : A Study Of The Evolution Of John Steinbeck's Attitude Towards Good And Evil, Karen Wallace Bondonno

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of my thesis to trace the evolution of Steinbeck's view, in his non-fiction of what the conflict between good and evil consists, along with the development of this concern, and its related stylistic influence, on his fiction, in order to show that Steinbeck's major concern was for man's relationship to this conflict.

I was alerted to the existence of an evolution in view in Steinbeck by the chance reading of his last novel, The Winter of Our Discontent, in juxtaposition with several early novels. In order best to follow this change, then, I read all …

Pastoral Counseling With The Dying Child And His Family, Kenneth Doka May 1973

Pastoral Counseling With The Dying Child And His Family, Kenneth Doka

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper hopes to explore the area of pastoral counseling to the dying child and his family. The paper views such a ministry as having three major facets. First is the ministry to the dying child himself. While this seems elementary, it is often neglected, often because of the minister’s own difficulty with the death of a child. It must be realized that childhood is not a homogeneous unit but that there are sharply differentiated stages within childhood. The five-year-old reacts to death in ways considerably different from the adolescent. Thus research along these lines, along with its pastoral implications …

Ecology And America, Peter Eugene Hartley May 1973

Ecology And America, Peter Eugene Hartley

American Studies ETDs

The present basis of our society implies the inevitable destruction of the environment. The considerations which make this evident also make nonsense of the distinction between capitalism and socialism. Further, if we wish to save the environment we must abandon the scientific world view. The crucial question is a question of values, and values have an aesthetic basis. That is, values have a mystical basis. Though my approach to it is more or less anthropological when I begin, American literature provides the indispensable basis for my examination of the shape and quality of actual American life, seen in ecological totality …
