A Defense Of Naturalism In Moral Education (1975), Philip C. Guin Jan 1975

A Defense Of Naturalism In Moral Education (1975), Philip C. Guin

Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin

The dissertation investigates the possibility of a naturalist approach to moral education. The two initial chapters deal with questions of freedom and moral relativity, respectively. In regard to moral relativity, it is argued that the facts of cultural diversity fail to support a thesis of cultural relativity. The final two chapters focus on anti-naturalist attempts to discredit naturalism, and on the relation of naturalism to moral education. It is argued that anti-naturalists have failed to offer an adequate account of ethical and moral life, or of the critical demands laid upon the agent in making moral decisions. The naturalist rejoinder …

'T. C. Mits' And The Utility Of Science, Evan B. Hazard Jan 1975

'T. C. Mits' And The Utility Of Science, Evan B. Hazard

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The general public, as well as many leaders of our society tend to view science as descriptive and to value science mainly for "practical" applications. Although technological implications are important, science cannot legitimately be considered primarily descriptive. Science is a creative activity, involving human judgment, and can most fruitfully be thought of as metaphor or play. The practical value of science, of the liberal arts in general, and of academe is that they provide the playful approach to experience which is a necessary basis for successful planning and action, and which makes us human.

(1975) Nietzsche’S View Of Sublimation In The Educational Process, Ann Margaret Sharp Jan 1975

(1975) Nietzsche’S View Of Sublimation In The Educational Process, Ann Margaret Sharp

Collected Papers of Ann Margaret Sharp

Against the prevailing "return to nature" educational philosophy of his day, Nietzsche stressed sublimation, the active redirecting of one's life energy or the channeling of one's power in the service of creativity, and the inevitability of suffering as essential in the attainment of freedom. The current educational practice which mitigates the importance of sublimation and suffering were, in his view, a subversive tactic of the German State to keep the reins on individual autonomy and creativity and insure conformity to the status quo.

A Sociological Profile Of Lds Inmates At Utah State Prison, Robert D. Payne Jan 1975

A Sociological Profile Of Lds Inmates At Utah State Prison, Robert D. Payne

Theses and Dissertations

The present thesis is a study of 103 LDS inmates at Utah State Prison. It tests the hypothesis that the inmates are more likely to come from non-cohesive homes. In 1959, Dr. Evan T. Peterson completed a study of three thousand 12-18 year old LDS male youths. Out of Dr. Peterson's respondents, 112 sixteen-eighteen year old subjects were selectively drawn to match the inmate sample in terms of fathers' occupation and education. This stratified sample was used as the control group.

The study confirmed the above family environment hypothesis. It found that when compared to the control group, the LDS …

The Unity Of Biblical Man, Elizabeth Foxley Jan 1975

The Unity Of Biblical Man, Elizabeth Foxley

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Various religious ideas are expressed in both the Old and the New Testament. Although these ideas do not express a single theology within the Biblical literature, some basic ideas do reoccur. Among these are notions about man, his relationship to God and to society. These concepts of man and his relationships may be brought together to form a composite "man" which might be referred to as Biblical Man. There are contemporary views of Biblical Man which may not in fact be Biblical. Such a view is the notion that man is formed of two or three {listinct parts: body and …

Analysis Of The Occupational Status And Choice Patterns Of Women, Terry L. Besser Jan 1975

Analysis Of The Occupational Status And Choice Patterns Of Women, Terry L. Besser

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There were two parts of this study. The first part involved a determination of the status of women. Occupation, education and income criterion were used and it was concluded that educationally and occupationally, women were increasing their status relative to men. But the income of working women in contrast to men employed in the same fields was at an all time low. The central locus of the low occupational status of women was seen to be in women's continual choice of pursuing traditional female jobs. This leads to the second part of this study which was concerned with why women …
