Women's Studies In The South Central Region: A Conference, Victoria Jacoby Jul 1975

Women's Studies In The South Central Region: A Conference, Victoria Jacoby

Women's Studies Quarterly

On October 19, 1974, 150 women and men, students and faculty, gathered at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas for a women's studies conference. Representatives from four states (Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas) and over 25 schools exchanged tales of triumph and frustration along with their course syllabi. One year of good intentions and another year of actual planning by the S.M.U. Women's Studies Council preceded the event itself. The conference was a product of an odd combination of zeal, obligation and curiosity.

The conference was a great idea, we acknowledged, but how could the S.M.U. Women's Studies Council teach …

Women's Studies Quarterly

One of the most distinguished programs in women's studies was begun on the Buffalo campus of the State University of New York in 1970, another in 1969 at Cornell University, an institution affiliated with SUNY. At SUNY/College at Old Westbury, a Women's Studies Program was written into the innovative curriculum planned more than four years ago, and that institution has been host to The Feminist Press and the Clearinghouse on Women's Studies since that time. Newer programs have developed at Albany, Brockport and New Paltz, while SUNY/Binghamton's women's history program is the first in the nation to grant the doctorate. …

Women's Studies Quarterly

from the CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, CHICO

Women's Studies at Chico developed from courses offered by women in their different departments, gathered to form a minor degree program in spring, 1973. Two specifically women's studies courses were designed at that time: a team-taught Introduction to Women's Studies (draws around 80 students a semester, changes women students' expectations and horizons by projecting models of achieving women) and a Senior Research Seminar designed to integrate the students' major and minor. Both are taught by the Women's Studies Coordinator. Student demand has led to the development of new courses whose content received a great …

History Of The University Of Northern Iowa Museum, 1890-1975, Pauline L. Sauer

Library Documents & Reports (entire collection)

The museum at the University of Northern Iowa has been an important adjunct of the institution since the last decade of the nineteenth century. The first 65 or so years of its existence are reviewed by the late Mr. Fred Cram, then archivist at the Iowa State Teachers College, in a 15-page paper, “The Museum at the Iowa State Normal School,” prepared in 1955 at the request of Dr. Emmett J. Cable, curator of the museum. The information on this era, summarized below, is gleaned from this paper unless otherwise noted.

Conversion And Culture Change In A Highland Maya Community, Judy Stomsvik Jun 1975

Conversion And Culture Change In A Highland Maya Community, Judy Stomsvik

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The traditional religion of the Tzotzil Indians of Chiapas, Mexico is a blend of ancient Maya and Spanish Catholic elements. Recently Protestant missionaries and lay workers have entered the area, with varying degrees of success. One of these evangelizing· movements has been carried out by members of the Seventh-day Adventist church, with a great deal of success in some areas.

Since conversion of individuals to Adventism results in culture change for these individuals in the area of world view, i.t should also have ramifications in other areas of the culture as well. The purpose of this research was to discover …

Implications Of American Missionary Presence In 19th And 20th Century Iran, Linda Colleen Karimi May 1975

Implications Of American Missionary Presence In 19th And 20th Century Iran, Linda Colleen Karimi

Dissertations and Theses

American missionaries to Iran exerted little influence in the area of religion, rather their impact was in education and medicine. Two decisive factors involved in their success were the awakening of Iran to the advances of Western technology and the limited scope of indigenous opportunities in the fields of learning and medicine. Their work in Iran was, however, hampered by opposition from those elements wishing to retain the status quo. In spite of such reactions, they were able to maintain their positions in Iran for approximately one hundred years. It was the advent of the Pahlavi dynasty which initially limited …
